Which XC70 to choose
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Long-distance estate with all-wheel drive: a third-generation XC70 D5 with 158 kW. It is a used-only choice; the closest new alternative is the V60 Cross Country.
- Electric commuting with a petrol back-up: the new XC70 with the 39.6 kWh battery, where it is sold.
- Seven seats: neither; to weigh up alternatives side by side, use our car comparison, and for three rows look at the Volvo XC90.
The new XC70 sits between the Volvo XC60 and the XC90 in size. Volvo itself, from Gothenburg in 1927 to today, is covered in our history of Volvo.
The Volvo XC70 is now a mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV, revealed on 7 May 2025 and on sale in China since 26 September 2025. It is built in Taizhou, China, on the SMA platform and has 234 or 340 kW, with a CLTC electric range of up to 212 km. From 1997 to 2016 the same name stood for something quite different: the raised, all-wheel-drive version of the V70 estate. As of October 2026 the sources confirm Chinese sales only; European plans have been reported but not priced by Volvo.

When Volvo revealed the car, it said China would come first and other markets were being considered. Volvo's chief executive at the time, Håkan Samuelsson, described the XC70 as the brand's entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment and a bridge to full electrification.
Powertrain, batteries and range
The XC70 uses a series-parallel hybrid system. A 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (code BHE15-BFZ) works with electric motors and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Motor.es reports 113 kW (154 CV) for the engine alone.
| Version (China) | Drive | System power | Battery | CLTC electric range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long Range Core | FWD | 234 kW (318 PS) | 21.2 kWh | 116 km |
| Extended Range Core | AWD | 340 kW (462 PS) | 39.6 kWh | 212 km |
| Extended Range Plus | AWD | 340 kW (462 PS) | 39.6 kWh | 212 km |
| Extended Range Ultra | AWD | 340 kW (462 PS) | 39.6 kWh | 212 km |
The larger pack holds 1.87 times as much energy as the smaller one, and the CLTC range rises by a similar factor, 1.83. The fastest version reaches 100 km/h in 5.28 seconds. CarNewsChina gives a combined range of over 1,200 km and a DC charge from 0 to 80 % in as little as 23 minutes. Motor.es quotes 39 minutes for the smaller battery. Wikipedia's overview gives a lower total range of about 805 km, so the combined figure depends on the test and should be treated with care. CLTC figures are also more generous than WLTP, and no WLTP value had been published in the sources. The car can also supply 6 kW to external devices.

Design, size and cabin
At 4,815 mm the XC70 is a mid-size SUV with a long wheelbase of 2,895 mm, which leaves a 1,920 mm body overhang front and rear combined. It is 1,890 mm wide and 1,650 mm tall. The design follows the EX90 and ES90: Thor's Hammer matrix LED headlights, a closed grille with an active shutter, and LED tail lights set into the rear glass.
Inside there is a two-spoke steering wheel, a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 15.4-inch central touchscreen. A head-up display projects an image that Volvo describes as 92 inches wide. The audio system from Harman Kardon has 23 speakers. In China, 24 sensors support 21 assistance functions, including Pilot Assist on selected motorways. The platform is closely related to Geely's CMA and to the Lynk & Co 08; the group behind both brands is described in our history of Geely.

The original XC70: a raised V70 estate
The name began with the V70 XC (Cross Country), introduced in September 1997 for the 1998 model year. It was an all-wheel-drive V70 estate with more ground clearance (166 mm) and tougher trim; 53,857 were built. Its 2.5-litre turbo gave 142 kW (193 PS).
The second generation arrived in 2000 as the V70 XC and was renamed XC70 for the 2003 model year. Ground clearance grew to 210 mm. Engines were a 2.4T with 147 kW (200 PS), a 2.5T with 154 kW (210 PS) and a D5 diesel with 120 kW (163 PS).
The third XC70, on the P3 platform, appeared in February 2007 and added hill-descent control. Outputs ranged from 147 kW (2.5T) to 224 kW (T6), with a 175 kW 3.2 and a 158 kW D5 diesel. Compared with that T6, the 2025 AWD version has 116 kW more, a gain of about 52 %. In 2007 Euro NCAP gave the related V70 five stars for adult occupants. Production ended on 13 May 2016, a few weeks after the V70, and the Volvo V90 in Cross Country form took over its role.
| Generation | Years | Engines (examples) | Ground clearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| V70 XC | 1997–2000 | 2.5T 142 kW | 166 mm |
| V70 XC / XC70 | 2000–2007 | 2.4T 147 kW, 2.5T 154 kW, D5 120 kW | 210 mm |
| XC70 (P3) | 2007–2016 | 2.5T 147–170 kW, 3.2 175 kW, T6 224 kW, D5 158 kW | raised over V70 |
