Which T-5R to buy - verdict
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
The estate was the body in highest demand when new, and Cream Yellow remains the most sought-after colour, as The Herald notes. A manual is rarer than an automatic and, according to PistonHeads, commands a clear premium in the UK; in the United States almost every car is an automatic. Because these cars are now 30 years old, buyers should prioritise documented maintenance of the turbo engine and automatic gearbox over colour. Our car comparison tool helps to set the T-5R's figures against other fast estates, and the car finder lists current estates by power.
The Volvo 850 T-5R is the limited-edition high-performance version of the front-wheel-drive Volvo 850 saloon and estate, built for the 1995 model year with engine and drivetrain work by Porsche. Its 2.3-litre turbocharged five-cylinder delivered 165 kW (225 PS), or about 177 kW (240 PS) with overboost, and the bright Cream Yellow examples became the best-known fast Volvos of the 1990s. In 1996 the 850 R replaced it.

The T-5R belongs to our Volvo catalogue, and the background of the brand is in our history of Volvo.
How the T-5R came about
The 850 itself was a radical car for Volvo when it appeared in June 1991: a front-wheel-drive compact executive car with a transverse five-cylinder engine, Delta-link rear suspension and the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS). It replaced the rear-drive 240 and was built until 1997, with 716,903 cars in total. The estate followed in February 1993, and a 1994 facelift brought new bumpers, lights and switchgear.
The T-5R was planned as a limited run on top of the existing T-5 turbo. The Herald, marking the car's 30th anniversary in 2025, writes that Volvo first planned about 1,000 cars, but demand, especially for the estate, was far higher. Volvo built a second batch in 1996, although only the 1995 cars carried the T-5R badge.
T-5R engine, Porsche tuning and performance
The heart of the car is the 2,319 cc turbocharged five-cylinder B5234T5. Porsche co-developed the engine tuning, the transmission and other drivetrain parts, and a special Bosch engine control unit (#628 for the US, #629 for Europe) raised boost pressure by about 2 psi. Italian cars used a 2.0-litre B5204T turbo because of Italian rules on engine size.

The drag coefficient was 0.29, and Wikipedia records 0.88 g of lateral grip on the standard Pirelli P-Zero tyres. In the United States, where only the automatic was offered, Car and Driver timed a 1995 T-5R estate at 6.7 seconds to 60 mph, as Jalopnik recalls.

Design, colours and interior
From the outside the T-5R is discreet: a front bumper with a lip spoiler, side skirts, a boot-lid spoiler and a "Motorsport" badge. The standard wheels were titanium-grey 17-inch five-spoke "Titan" alloys; North American buyers could choose 16-inch wheels at no cost.
| Colour (1995) | Cars built worldwide | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cream Yellow | 2,537 | 346 US saloons and 49 US estates; "Faded Yellow" in Australia |
| Stone Black | 2,516 | - |
| Olive Green metallic | 1,911 | - |
| Others | a handful | two white and two aubergine pre-production cars, three grey cars for the Arabian market |
Some countries received only some colours; Norway, for example, got only yellow. Jalopnik notes that Volvo's official name for the yellow was simply T-5R Yellow, and that dealers struggled to sell it at first, so many yellow cars became company cars.
Inside, every T-5R was black. The seats combined graphite leather with Alcantara inserts that Porsche helped to design, and the dashboard had deep walnut trim with polished aluminium door sills.

Safety and equipment
The 850 was the first mass-produced car to offer side airbags, introduced in 1995, and the T-5R had them in the seat cushions. Daytime running lamps, three-point belts in all five seats and OBD-II diagnostics a year before they became standard completed the specification. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ranked the 850 as the fourth-safest car in 1995.
Where it was sold and what it cost
The T-5R was sold in many European countries, Japan, the United States, Canada and Australia. Wikipedia's market split shows Germany as the biggest buyer:
| Market | Cars |
|---|---|
| Germany | 1,433 |
| Italy (2.0 turbo) | 914 |
| United States | 876 |
| Japan | 749 |
| Netherlands | 489 |
| United Kingdom | 440 |
| Sweden | 321 |
| Spain | 185 |
| Canada | 103 |
In the UK the car cost £28,840 new in 1995, according to PistonHeads. PistonHeads also gives a different UK figure of 200 cars for 1995, against Wikipedia's 440 for the whole run.
Touring cars: the 850 in the BTCC
Although the T-5R itself was a road car, its image owed much to racing. Tom Walkinshaw Racing entered an 850 estate in the 1994 British Touring Car Championship; it qualified third at best and finished fifth at best. In 1995 TWR switched to the saloon, which took 12 pole positions and six wins, and in 1996 it won five more races.
850 R: the successor
In spring 1996 the 850 R replaced the T-5R. It came in more colours (Cream Yellow was dropped), with sports seats, a 200 W audio amplifier and, for manual cars, the higher-boost B5234T4 engine with 184 kW (250 PS). Some manual cars of 1996 had the M59 gearbox with a viscous limited-slip differential. The 850 was then replaced by the S70 saloon and V70 estate in 1997. Volvo's later fast estates and saloons can be compared in our guides to the Volvo S60 generations and the Volvo V90 on the SPA platform.
