I generation (1976-1981)
The debut car called Honda Accord appeared in 1976 and at first was a compact model of three-door hatchback. The construction of a 3-volume machine started only a year later. In serial production the model lasted until 1981, after which it gave way to the next generation.
Importantly, Honda Accord of the first generation was able to disperse in a fairly short period of time with a large circulation of more than 1,000,000 vehicles. The debut versions were presented as a compact class, and they could be purchased in 2 body versions – a 3-door hatchback and a standard sedan.
Honda Accord I had a pleasant appearance, especially in the times of its production. Four round headlamps (the sedan had rectangular headlamps), a front bumper under which the direction indicators were placed, could be seen in front. The front lateral fenders received external rear-view mirrors and repeaters of direction indicators.
The rear part is distinguished by large rear-view lamps, massive bumper and a small exhaust pipe. Inside those years, Japanese designers were able to make a pleasant and comfortable interior. It was convenient to operate the car.
A four-spoke steering wheel was in front of the driver, followed by a conventional dashboard. A couple of ventilation deflectors, clocks, radios and other controls can be seen on the centre console. There is a normal manual gearshift lever at hand.
The length of the vehicle varied from 4,125 to 4,450 millimetres, the height from 1,340 to 1,360 millimetres and the width from 1,620 millimetres. The wheelbase received 2,380 millimeters, and the height of the ground clearance is no more than 165 millimeters. The curb weight of the “Japanese” is not less than 945 kilograms.
Specifications Accord I generation
Honda Accord 1 generation had a gasoline 1.6-liter or 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a carburetor power system. They could develop from 68 to 80 horsepower. As a connecting link between the wheels and the engine, there was a 5-speed mechanized gearbox or 2-speed semi-automatic transmission. Since 1980, the latter has replaced a full-fledged “machine” with 3 gears.
The first family of Honda Accord is based on a front-drive platform, where there is a design of an independent type of “walk” on two axles. Both front and rear are standard McPherson racks, together with stabilizers of transverse stability. Vehicle operation is easy thanks to the hydraulic power steering, and the brake mechanism has disc front and drum rear units, as well as a vacuum power amplifier.
II generation (1981-1985)
When 1981 came, Honda’s management team showed the world community the Accord of the second family, which was made possible by the deep improvement of the previous model. The vehicle was launched in addition to Japan in the United States. More expensive models received a cabin with leather trim. If we talk about the level of equipment, it is quite high for all Honda machines. The list of options has an electric package and air conditioner. The front panel, together with the dashboard, has become more modern and stylish.
Specifications II generation
The second generation of Honda Accord has four-cylinder in-line carburetor gasoline units. The capacity of the units was 1.6 litres, and the capacity varied from 80 to 88 “horses”. In addition, there was room for four-cylinder atmospheric units, where fuel injection was distributed. The volume of such units was 1.8 liters, and produced such “engines” 101 horsepower. The wheels and motor are tied together by a five-stage “mechanics” or four-range “automatic”.
The drive is provided only for the front axle. As a base for the Honda Accord of the second family was provided a front-drive “cart”, where there are independent suspensions on the two axles. The front and rear were equipped with McPherson shock absorber racks. It is easier to operate the machine with the help of hydraulic booster, and the braking system has disc front and drum mechanisms at the back. After 2 years, they were supplemented by ABS system.
III generation (1985-1989)

Specifications III generation
Honda Accord III generation had a wide range of 4-cylinder atmospheric engines operating on gasoline. For example, it was a 1.6-liter 88-horsepower engine and “engine” designed for 1.8-liter, developing from 100 – 110 horsepower. The most powerful was the 2.0-liter unit, which produced from 102 to 160 horsepower. The motors were paired with a five-speed “mechanics” or 4-range “automatic”, which directed the entire torque to the front axle.
The Japanese car Honda Accord coupe was built on a front-drive version, which received an independent type of suspension both in front and behind. The front and rear axles have double, transversely placed levers, helical springs and stabilizers of transverse stability. The machine has a disc braking system on all wheels, and it is easy to operate the machine with the help of a hydraulic steering wheel assistant. Honda Accord 3 can be often found in our country.
IV generation (1989-1993)
The fourth Honda Accord family has been selling since 1989. The car was able to significantly increase its size, which led to a “transition” to a medium sized niche. In addition, the company’s management decided to get rid of the production of 3-door hatchback body. Three years later, the Japanese car has undergone a small modernization, affecting the exterior, interior and technical unit.
Serially continued to produce the vehicle until July 1993, after which the model gave way to the next generation. Honda Accord IV generation is a representative of the size class D according to the European classification. The fourth family can be often found in Russia.
And this can be easily explained – the car is fast, however, inexpensive. This is a point that many people are encouraged to buy a car with their hands. In addition, Honda Accord of the 4th generation holds the road perfectly and does a good job of cornering. Partly it turned out with the help of 2-lever suspension in front and behind.
It is nice that the body of the Japanese car was zinc-plated and on the new vehicle, the plant provided a 6-year warranty on the bodywork. Interestingly, if you look at the photo of the rear of the sedan, you can see the lock of the luggage compartment lid installed in the lantern. A similar solution can be found on the German Audi A8.
Expensively equipped cars have air conditioning, cruise control and a driver’s cushion. Luggage compartment has received 439 liters of useful space. Even here you can see the essence of Accord – sports notes + practicality. This is a car for those who like sports vehicles, but, due to the tight interior and a small luggage compartment, can not afford to buy a fast car.
Specifications IV generation
The fourth generation of Honda Accord has a wide range of 4-cylinder gasoline engines. The novelty had engines with a carburetor type of power supply, volume of 1.8 – 2.0 liters, which produced from 90 – 110 “mare” and from 143 – 159 Nm. There were engines with distributed injection system – their volume was 2.0 – 2.2 liters, and they developed from 133 – 160 horsepower and 179 – 198 Nm. The car was driven by a five-stage “mechanics” or a four-stage “machine”.
The model was front-drive. As mentioned above, the truck received an independent, two-lever suspension in front and behind. Some versions received the 4WS system, which had a rear wheel steering system. The sedan was driven without any problems, what was the merit of the hydraulic power steering. As a braking system we used a disk device on all wheels. The front wheels are ventilated.
V Generation (1993-1998)
With the advent of 1993, the Japanese firm Honda officially showed the fifth family. It was from here that the machine was clearly divided into models for the European, Japanese and American markets, which were distinguished by their appearance, interior, powertrain and equipment list.
Serial production of the machine ended in 1998, when a new, sixth generation came. Honda Accord, no matter what generation and year of production, has always stood out for its performance characteristics. The fifth generation serves as proof that the car can be considered very reliable in general.
It is clear that the most popular type of body for the “Japanese” was a sedan, but still produced coupe and even a wagon. Three years after the release of the V family car, the workers decided to upgrade the sedan a little, in particular, the appearance. The restyling version can be distinguished by the radiator grille.
In the first version, the grille had a modest size, and the central air intake was made through the intakes in the front bumper. Already from the factory, the trucks were covered with a protective layer of zinc, which helped to combat body corrosion. The door handles were made under the lower grip, which was traditional for vehicles from the 1990s.
The front panel of Honda Accord 5 was made using soft plastic and the central console could be finished with wood, which gave a certain weight to the sports car. Already in the most modest configurations you can see the front power windows.
A hatch in the fifth generation is not uncommon. The driver’s seat has received a large number of settings, so each owner will be able to sit in the car with comfort. The sedan turned out to be quite wide, so three people can sit comfortably on the back sofa. Tall people on the second row may feel discomfort over their heads.
If we talk in general, the visibility of the machine is excellent, however, the rear part is quite high, based on which, when moving backwards, you need to be more careful. Luggage compartment has 405 liters of useful space, which is quite good. If necessary, you can remove the backrests, which will significantly increase the useful volume.
Specifications V Generation
The engineers equipped Honda Accord V with both gasoline and diesel-powered engines. The gasoline list starts with four-cylinder engines, with volumes of 1.8 – 2.3 litres, which generate from 115 – 190 horsepower and 158 – 206 Nm of rotational force. In addition, there is a V-shaped, 2.7-liter “six”, developing 172 horsepower.
In addition to gasoline versions, the company used 2.0-liter turbo diesel power filling, producing 105 “horses” and 210 Nm of torque. These engines were paired with two gearboxes – 5-speed “mechanized” or four-speed “automated”. All efforts were transferred only to the front axle.
Honda Accord 5 generation has a well-proven suspension on all wheels. It is an independent 2-lever design, which is also equipped with stabilizers of transverse stability. The braking unit has 4-wheel drive elements, the front of which are ventilated. Hydra-aided steering wheel makes it easier to operate the Japanese sedan.
VI generation (1998-2002)
The sixth generation of Honda Accord was officially introduced in 1998 and in the same year they started selling cars. Production continued until 2002. This version differs from the previous generation by its more spacious body and uniquely stylized interior. The model already had a more expressive appearance, improved headlights and good dynamism.
The car has a characteristic feature – the dashboard has 3 pointers in separate wells. The level of production of Honda Accord VI generation is very appreciated. The vehicle differs from the competitors in its precise fit of parts and good corrosion protection. Interestingly, the dishonest “sellers” easily hide the real mileage.
This is achieved with the help of a magnificent salon. The plastic installed here is resistant to wear and tear, and the interior parts are well connected to each other. The style is superior to all other Japanese competitors of the 1990s.
The seats, which are excellent, provide good support, but it is worth noting that the upholstery of the seats “dragged” in a fairly short period of time. The steering wheel also often looks almost new, thanks to the quality of the material.
Specifications VI generation
The vehicles had 1.6-, 1.8-, 2.0- and 2.3-litre engines, which produced from 116 to 154 horsepower. In addition, there was a V-shaped 3.0-liter “six”, which received 200 horsepower. A two-liter turbocharged diesel engine was also provided.
Honda’s employees installed an independent spring suspension on the front and back of the 6th generation, which is a two-lever construction. The Japanese version of the D-class had an electric amplifier with variable characteristics and an effective braking system, which received disc brakes on all wheels, as well as the ABS system. The front units received a ventilation function.
VII generation (2002-2007)
During the exhibition in Detroit, which was held in early January, the “Japanese” exhibited their seventh generation of the already famous vehicle. Honda Accord’s version of the wagon came out a little later, in 2004. The car is referred to as a four-door D-class sedan. In 2005, 7 family of sedans survived restyling. Production continued until 2007.
Of course, many people are interested in tuning Honda Accord 7, but Japanese specialists managed to make such a vehicle, which was already attractive from the factory. The appearance of the vehicle was designed very correctly. The design staff was able to reach the “golden mean” in which there are no unnecessary bends and details – all body parts look harmonious.
Despite the fact that this year the seventh family will be 16 years old, its appearance will not be called obsolete. And today the car is solid and actual. The design team was able to look into the future and create a similar machine that would look great at any time.
I am glad to see a broken radiator grille with chrome edging, slanted headlights and aggressive bumper architecture. Such implementations allow to consider Honda Accord VII a sports car. The question of tuning for such a “projectile” falls into the background.
It is important that the specialists were able to achieve a good drag coefficient of 0.26. Because of this, it was possible to significantly reduce gasoline consumption and increase the dynamic characteristics. If you look into the interior of the novelty, you realize that Japanese specialists have made a step forward not only in the issue of design. And today, all “minced meat” of Honda Accord VII looks actual and interesting.
The age of the car is slightly affected by the presence of an old black-and-white on-board computer installed on the central console. However, even after a while it was replaced by a digital LCD computer. They also changed the steering rail. The seventh family Honda Accord also had a customizable steering column.
You can look at solid wood-simulating plastic inserts. They decided to decorate the central console of the interior and side panels of the doors. The steering wheel turned out to be multifunctional. Door handles were made in “chrome style”, and the dashboard received bright red illumination. The quality of finishing materials, as before, is the highest praise. Sitting inside is very comfortable, and there is plenty of space. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 450 litres of usable space.
Specifications VII generation
The seventh generation has received the expanded list of productive power units. The gasoline list had 4-cylinder engines with distributed injection and volume from 2.0 to 2.4 liters. As a result, the engines produced from 152 to 190 “horses” and from 186 to 223 Nm. For the United States market were six-cylinder 3.0-liter V-type engines, which produced from 240 to 244 “mare” and 286 to 287 Nm.
In addition, the Honda Accord VII had a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine designed for 140 horsepower. It developed as much as 340 Nm of thrust. For such “engines”, the Japanese provided 5-speed boxes on the “mechanics” or automatic boxes, which transmitted torque to the front axle (in the Japanese market there were cars with all-wheel drive).
On the “seventh” generation was an independent chassis, which received a multilever design in front and behind. Electric power steering helped to drive the vehicle. All wheels were equipped with disc “brakes”.
VIII generation (2008-2013)
The car was presented during the Geneva Motor Show in 2008, and after 3 years on the same spot released an updated version of the sedan. In total, the car was produced until 2013, after which came the next 9th family. On the roadway, the remarkable sedan Honda Accord 2013 looked like a flagship.
It has aggressive outlines, which eloquently testify to the significant power and ability to outshine anyone. The designers have made every effort to ensure that the appearance of Honda Accord 8 can be proportionately combined with the sportiness and sophistication that is inherent in all business class sedans.
Their work was not in vain, because the “eight” can not be confused with another car. It has its own corporate style. This can be attributed not only to the nose area, but also to the silhouette. Honda Accord VIII has a new false radiator grille, where there are a lot of chrome parts. This can include 3 lines of V-shaped type, which are arranged horizontally, a massive nameplate Honda.
The peculiar stylistics of headlights pleased. It was decided to place it on the same line with the radiator grille. The headlights were able to give the Japanese sedan a beautiful aggressiveness. The lower part of the large bumper received a large type of air intake, and on the edges – massive compartments with built-in “fog lamps”.
The eighth chord has been given an abundance of straight lines, so his aerodynamics is fine. The rear part does not possess any extra elements. There are neat headlights, wide luggage compartment with a convenient low load. The bend of the aft door was transformed into a modest spoiler.
In the interior of Honda Accord 2013, the designers made a rich, but discreet interior design. Everything looks expensive. All the panels were made of soft plastic, which is quite interesting in appearance. The seats are upholstered with artificial leather, however, they are of very high quality and pleasant to the touch.
Since the sedan has turned out to be big in size, inside there is an abundance of space. The owner, along with the front passenger, feel comfortable enough. People sitting on the second row also have a lot of space. The driver’s seat itself has a low seat, so it seems like you’re in a sports car. The Honda Accord 2013 rudder is equipped with a large number of different keys. The dashboard is also rich in the number of buttons, which can be a little confusing at first.
The massive on-board computer display, which displays the necessary data from the rear of the cameras and the multimedia system, is also a pleasure. We can’t help but notice the good ergonomics of the two-row seats. Seats have a wide range of settings and good side support. The volume of a boot has received 467 litres of useful space. However, most drivers talk about its uncomfortable form when it comes to transporting oversized cargo.
Specifications VIII generation
The eighth generation of Honda Accord 2013 has two gasoline 4-cylinder atmospheric aggregates with volumes of 2.0 and 2.5 liters. The 2.0-litre version has 156 horsepower and 192 Nm of torque, and the 2.5-litre unit has 201 “horses” and 234 Nm of torque. They operate in conjunction with a six-speed manual or five-band automatic transmission.
All efforts are being transferred to the front axle. The sedan has an adaptive electric power steering that works in conjunction with the VSA stabilization system. Speaking of the suspension, it is excellent here – it has a two-lever design at the front and a multilever back. On top of that, Honda Accord 8 features 2-stage shock absorbers that can function in different modes under different loads.
The winter of 2012 was very significant, as the new Honda of the ninth family of 2012-2013 model years in the North of America in Detroit was demonstrated. And a little later, in the summer, the Japanese manufacturer showed everyone a number of photos of the ready to release Accord sedan and coupe, a model of which was taken as a model of the model year 2013.

The Japanese novelty is identified with a serious sedan, a powerful samurai character, which does not need any excess design.
Despite all this, this update did not diminish its serious character, but on the contrary – increased it. The radiator grille looks rather massive, and installed in the front of the bumper with built-in fog lights and a beautiful relief air intake, having a rounded shape, looks even aggressive.
The updated rear bumper with trapezoidal exhaust system nozzles added a solid handwriting to the Japanese sedan, and now it looks expensive and presentable. Large headlights with new shape and imitation rear spoiler on the lid of the luggage compartment have appeared.
When you look at the exterior of the Japanese car Honda Accord, you realize that it begins to bribe with its perfect shape. The car appears as a modern sedan, which, looking at from the outside, and asks to say that whoever buys it, unheard of luck.
Restyling of the exterior initially affected the bumper, which now looks much more relief, and the radiator grille has become chrome-plated. Lengthened LED headlights, a little like the eyes, which know how to shine interestingly high beam. In general, the appearance of Honda Accord can be said to be new, although he still adopted some familiar “manners” from his younger brother. The salon is made in an elegant style that is very pleasing to the eye and creates a sense of luxury due to some elements that have been made of chrome, and which have the highest quality of material and perfect fit details.
The driver’s section of Honda Accord sedan interior is distinguished by high ergonomics, excellent visibility and comfortable seating with all kinds of seat adjustments. The armchairs installed on the second row do not differ much in comfort from the front, and when you are there, you have the impression that you are in an expensive German business class car.
Changes to the interior have hardly touched the interior, except for the appearance of the interior lighting with LED lamps. It is not necessary to fear that already habitual “lotions”, such as keyless access, climate control, full electric package (electric windows of mirrors with heating, electric drive of driver’s seat, electric adjustment of steering column), as well as leather interior will jump into the “nine”.
In bonus mode, new electrical assistants and infotainment systems will be available for the Accord: LDW (this option monitors road markings), FCW (traffic monitoring and warning service), LaneWatch (monitoring blind areas with cameras installed on the driver’s and passenger’s side), Bluetooth support, 8-inch multimedia system with color display, which also has the function of reading SMS with the help of the car’s acoustic system.
What’s more, there’s a navigation system, a 40GB hard drive, a rear view camera, and support for Internet radio and other devices. As is customary, the quality of installed parts and the degree of interior assembly has improved, which, for quite understandable and logical reasons, will have an impact on the pricing policy of the Japanese – it will certainly rise in price.
If you put your hands on the steering wheel and press the accelerator pedal to the floor, you will feel that such a car can withstand various tests, as well as take the driver and passengers sitting next to each other to the destination safe and sound. Plastic will dominate the materials, however, it is possible to exchange them for other materials that the customer may like.
Armchairs made of velour can be made of leather, the steering wheel, which is rubberized, will receive a quality finish alcantara. The seats are quite ergonomically positioned, so the people behind you won’t be crowded. And the driver’s seat can be adjusted in all directions, although there is no memory option in this car.
The information from the dial is quite easy to read, and the screen installed in the center of the screen is able not only to play video, but also to show maps of the navigation system and other necessary information. Below it, the control panel of the audio player system found its place, and even below the control unit options of the machine.
The luggage compartment still holds 495 litres of free space. If desired, you can remove the backrests of the rear seats, thereby increasing the free space or transporting loads. In general, the saloon of Japanese sedan looks presentable and solid.
At once you feel the representative class, to which the ninth family tends to get very much. Due to the fact that it was possible to increase the length of the body, the space inside the car increased significantly, 9 centimeters were added for passengers sitting behind, which in turn had a positive effect on the comfort.
Now the car is produced as a global one, replacing the large and small variant. An advanced macpherson suspension with stability stabilizers is installed. For the Russian market, only two “engine” variants are offered. The first one is 2.4 DOHC with 4-cylinders and 16-valves. It produces 180 horsepower.
And the second, the engine with volume 3.5 V6 SOHC, 24-valves. This engine has a power of 281 horsepower. Such power units are equipped with Earth Dreams system, which is designed to increase economic performance without significant losses in power. One of the advantages of the 2.4-liter engine is that it has low fuel consumption.
Thus, according to the manufacturers’ assurances, in mixed mode it “eats” only 8 liters per hundred kilometers. The more powerful 3.5-liter engine helps the unsportsmanlike sedan to reach a mark of 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds, which is a good result. Synchronization with manual gearbox is not provided, so there is a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which is equipped with the option Grade Logic Control.
Thanks to the developed suspension, the car can easily enter corners, and the driver and passengers can enjoy the ride with comfort. If there are McPherson racks at the back, there is a multilever system at the back. You can choose from 3 types of light alloy wheels, which differ only in diameter: from 16 – 18 inches, depending on which version will be chosen.
As hybrid cars are gaining popularity in the world, the Japanese decided not to move away from the present. Therefore, in the spring of 2013, the car began to be equipped with a hybrid unit, which consists of a gasoline powered engine, 2.0 liters of i-VTEC, designed for 137 horsepower and an electric motor with a capacity of 120 kW, together with lithium-ion batteries. The Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) system helps to control these devices.
Optionally, you can select 3 possible algorithms for the operation of the units:
- Only gasoline engine;
- Mixed travel mode (internal combustion engine and electric motor are functioning);
- Only the thrust from the electric motor is applied.
A full charge of the battery only when an electric motor is used can last no more than 24 km, with the maximum speed of the hybrid not exceeding 100 km/h. It will take 1.5 hours to fully charge the batteries and a simple household outlet can be used. A full tank and charged batteries will allow you to travel about 800 km.
