Which Tipo to choose
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Long distances: the 1.6 MultiJet. It combines 320 Nm with low consumption, and the estate adds 550 litres of luggage space.
- Automatic for town: the 1.5 mild hybrid from 2022. It is newer and more efficient than the 1.6 E.torQ with its old six-speed automatic.
- Lowest cost: the 1.4 FIRE saloon. It is slow but simple, and its boot is bigger than the hatchback's.
- Safety: look for a car with the Safety Pack, which brings the four-star rating.
Our car comparison puts any Tipo version next to its rivals. Rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus Mk3 are more refined. The Tipo answers with space and price. More Fiat models are in our Fiat catalogue, and our guide to buying a Fiat covers the wider range.
The Fiat Tipo is a compact family car built by Tofaş in Bursa, Turkey, from 2015 to 2026. Buyers could choose a four-door saloon, a five-door hatchback or an estate, with engines from 70 to 96 kW. Turkish buyers knew it as the Egea, and in Mexico and the Middle East it was badged Dodge Neon. In Fiat's European range it filled the gap left by the Bravo, with a German base price of €13,990 for the saloon in February 2016.
In short
- Type 356, developed from 2014 as the Ægea project; Fiat and Tofaş invested US$1.5 billion in total.
- Saloon first shown in Istanbul in May 2015; hatchback and estate followed at Geneva in March 2016.
- Wikipedia's infobox gives 1,417,047 cars built; the millionth left Bursa in November 2022.
- Euro NCAP (2016): three stars for the basic car, four once the Safety Pack is fitted.

A Fiat compact made in Turkey
Development started in 2014 under the name Ægea. The aim was a single car to replace two older models: the Bravo hatchback and the Linea saloon, which Tofaş had also built in Bursa. Styling came from Centro Stile Fiat in Turin; Roberto Giolito is credited as designer, with Alberto Dilillo leading the team. The front links the headlights to the grille, a detail that Wikipedia traces to Maserati styling.
The saloon came first. It appeared at the Istanbul show in May 2015 and went on sale in Turkey that November. In October 2015 Fiat confirmed that European cars would wear the Tipo badge, a name already used from 1988 to 1995 for a roomy, economical family hatchback. The new car was meant to carry the same message: plenty of space for little money.
AUTOHAUS described the Tipo in February 2016 as Fiat's return to the German compact class after the Bravo had left it. The magazine also noted that Fiat aimed the car mainly at southern Europe, Africa and Asia, where saloons sell well. More background on the brand is in our history of Fiat.
Three bodies, one wheelbase
All versions share a 2,638 mm wheelbase and a width of 1,792 mm. Length and luggage space differ by body:
| Body | Length | Height | Boot | Kerb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 4,532 mm | 1,497 mm | 520 l | 1,150–1,270 kg |
| Hatchback | 4,368 mm | 1,495 mm | 440 l | 1,195–1,295 kg |
| Estate (SW) | 4,571 mm | 1,514 mm | 550 l minimum | 1,305–1,350 kg |
The estate is 203 mm longer than the hatchback, and the saloon is 164 mm longer. The saloon's boot is 80 litres bigger than the hatchback's. In the UK the saloon was never offered, because demand there was expected to be low. In 2017 a two-seat commercial estate called Van and an LPG version named EasyPower joined the range.
The suspension is simple: MacPherson struts up front, a torsion beam behind. The platform is shared with the Fiat 500L and 500X, the Jeep Renegade and the Fiat Toro pickup. The base Pop trim in Germany had no infotainment unit; Easy and Lounge got Uconnect with a 5-inch screen.

Engines and gearboxes
| Engine | Years | Fuel | Gearbox | Power | Torque |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 FireFly T3 turbo | 2021–2026 | petrol | 5-speed manual | 74 kW (100 PS) | 190 Nm |
| 1.4 16V FIRE | 2015–2026 | petrol | 6-speed manual | 70 kW (95 PS) | 127 Nm |
| 1.4 T-Jet EasyPower | 2016–2020 | petrol/LPG | 6-speed manual | 88 kW (120 PS) | 215 Nm |
| 1.6 E.torQ | 2016–2020 | petrol | 6-speed automatic | 81 kW (110 PS) | 152 Nm |
| 1.5 FireFly T4 mild hybrid | 2022–2026 | petrol + 48 V | 7-speed DCT | 96 kW (130 PS) + 15 kW motor | 240 Nm |
| 1.3 MultiJet II | 2015–2026 | diesel | 5-speed manual | 70 kW (95 PS) | 200 Nm |
| 1.6 MultiJet II | 2015–2026 | diesel | 6-speed manual | 88 kW (120 PS) at launch; 96 kW (130 PS) later | 320 Nm |
The 1.6 MultiJet was the strongest engine for most of the car's life, and its 320 Nm made it the best long-distance choice. The FIRE 1.4 is a naturally aspirated engine with modest torque of 127 Nm, so it suits buyers who drive mainly in town. The 1.6 E.torQ with a conventional automatic was the cheapest two-pedal option before the hybrid arrived.
The mild hybrid joined in March 2022. A 15 kW electric motor sits inside the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, so the car can move off and creep in queues on electric power. Wikipedia quotes 4.7 l/100 km and an 11 % cut in CO₂ against the engine it replaced. From spring 2022 it was the only Tipo engine sold in Germany, until a diesel returned in 2024.

The 2020 facelift, Cross and hybrid
Fiat presented the revised Tipo in October 2020, and the updated cars arrived in 2021. The update brought new safety and technology features and the FireFly turbo three-cylinder with direct injection and a particulate filter. It also added the Tipo Cross, a hatchback with raised suspension and rugged trim. A Cross estate followed in 2022.
The Cross versions gave the Tipo a crossover look without a new body shell. With the hybrid as the main petrol choice, the late Tipo was a cheap way into an automatic family car with a petrol engine.

Prices in Germany
AUTO BILD published the German price lists of 2016:
| Version | Pop | Easy | Lounge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon 1.4 16V, 70 kW (Feb 2016) | €13,990 | €14,990 | €15,990 |
| Saloon 1.6 MultiJet, 88 kW (Feb 2016) | - | €18,190 | €19,190 |
| Estate 1.4 16V, 70 kW (Sep 2016) | €15,990 | €16,990 | €17,990 |
| Estate 1.6 MultiJet, 88 kW (Sep 2016) | - | €20,190 | €21,190 |
The estate cost €2,000 more than the saloon with the same engine and trim. In its February 2016 report AUTOHAUS listed the Mazda3 saloon from €21,290, so the base Tipo cost about a third less.
Safety and Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP tested the Tipo in 2016. As standard it received three stars: 82 % for adult occupants, 60 % for children, 62 % for pedestrians and 25 % for safety assist. With the Safety Pack, which adds a speed limiter and autonomous emergency braking, the safety-assist score rose to 57 % and the rating to four stars. Anyone buying a used Tipo should check for this pack, because it is the difference between a three- and a four-star car.
Sales: Turkey's favourite, Europe's bargain
The Egea was Turkey's best-selling car every year from 2016 to 2024. In Europe sales peaked early and then fell steadily:
| Year | Europe | Turkey (Egea) |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 61,023 | 38,260 |
| 2017 | 125,619 | 47,704 |
| 2019 | 84,789 | 55,432 |
| 2021 | 38,673 | 71,741 |
| 2023 | 18,552 | 121,798 |
| 2024 | 11,583 | 84,941 |
European sales in 2024 were about 91 % below the 2017 peak, while Turkish sales more than doubled between 2016 and 2024. In Germany 40,858 Tipos were registered from launch to December 2024, with the best year in 2017 (11,804 cars). The 500,000th car was built in February 2019, the millionth in November 2022. Wikipedia cites a farewell ceremony at Bursa on 7 July 2026, which closed the Type 356's production run.
