Which Proace to buy: verdict

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • Urban deliveries: the Proace Electric with the 50 kWh battery, especially as a Compact van.
  • Long distance and towing: a 2.0 or 2.2 diesel with 110 kW or more, which can tow up to 2,500 kg.
  • Maximum load: the Long van with Smart Cargo, for 6.6 m³ and items up to 4.0 m long.
  • People carrier: a Proace Verso Medium with eight seats and 603 litres of luggage space.

The Toyota Proace is Toyota's mid-size van for Europe, built by its partner PSA (now Stellantis) alongside the Citroën Jumpy, Peugeot Expert and, later, the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro and Fiat Scudo. The first Proace of 2013-2016 was a rebadged second-generation Jumpy; the second generation arrived in 2016 in three lengths, as a van and as the Proace Verso people carrier, and gained an electric version in 2020-2021 and a facelift in 2024.

In short

  • Two generations: Proace I (2013-2016) and Proace II (since 2016, facelift 2024), both built by PSA/Stellantis in France.
  • Proace II comes in Compact (4,609 mm), Medium (4,959 mm) and Long (5,309 mm) lengths, with up to 6.6 m³ of load space, up to 1,400 kg payload and up to 2,500 kg towing.
  • Diesel engines from 70 kW (95 PS) to 132 kW (180 PS); the electric version has 100 kW (136 PS) and 50 or 75 kWh batteries.
  • The Proace Verso received five Euro NCAP stars when it was launched in 2016.

Proace I (2013-2016)

Toyota had no mid-size van of its own in Europe, so from July 2013 it sold a version of the second-generation Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert under the Proace name. The Jumpy and Expert of that generation were built at the Sevel Nord plant in northern France and used PSA's 1.6- and 2.0-litre HDi diesels; we could not verify which outputs Toyota offered, so we do not list them. Toyota later said that the first Proace covered about 70% of the medium-van sub-segments.

Proace II (2016-2024)

The second generation shares its structure with the third-generation Jumpy and Expert. The people carrier, called Proace Verso, made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, and Toyota presented the full van range on 29 August 2016. It was now offered in three lengths on two wheelbases, including a new Compact version, and Toyota said the range covered all medium-van sub-segments.

The van came as a panel van, semi-glazed or glazed van, Combi and Crew Cab, with Platform Cab conversions from early 2017. The Verso was offered in Shuttle, Family and VIP grades. An off-road option added 25 mm of ground clearance and Toyota Traction Select with snow, mud and sand modes.

Electric Proace and the 2024 facelift

Toyota launched the Proace Verso Electric in November 2020 and the Proace Electric panel van in Europe in April 2021, its first battery-electric van and people carrier. The facelift announced in December 2023 for 2024 removed the upper grille between the headlamps, added full LED headlamps on some versions, a digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen on higher grades, and a new five-seat Crew Cab Premium. Stellantis presented the facelifts of the whole van family on 23 October 2023.

The electric motor has three modes: Power with 100 kW and 260 Nm, Normal with 80 kW and 210 Nm, and Eco with 60 kW and 190 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in 13.1 seconds and is limited to 130 km/h.

Safety

The Proace Verso people carrier received five Euro NCAP stars at its 2016 launch, as Toyota noted in its press material. The 2016 Proace also introduced Toyota Safety Sense to the van, combining a millimetre-wave radar and a camera for forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, with lane departure alert, road sign assist and automatic high beam. The 2024 update added adaptive cruise control from 30 km/h, intelligent speed assist, improved lane keeping, new front side airbags and a collapsible steering column. See the safety section for other ratings.

Reliability and known issues

We found no documented, Toyota-specific fault pattern in the sources used for this guide, so we do not list one. The Proace shares its engines and most components with its Stellantis sister vans, which means parts availability is wide. Toyota's own selling point is the Toyota Professional dealer network, launched in 2019, with roadside assistance 365 days a year and replacement vans during maintenance.
