VIN decoder
Enter a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number to see what the manufacturer encoded in it: make, model, model year, body style, engine, transmission and assembly plant.
How a VIN is structured
Characters 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): the country and the maker. Characters 4–8 describe the vehicle (model, body, engine, restraint systems). Character 9 is a check digit calculated from the other 16 — mandatory for vehicles built for North America. Character 10 encodes the model year, character 11 the assembly plant, and the last six are the serial number.
Model-year codes (10th character)
A–Y (without I, O, Q, U, Z) stand for 1980–2000 and again from 2010 (A = 2010, B = 2011 … S = 2025, T = 2026); 1–9 stand for 2001–2009.
What a VIN does not tell you
A VIN decode is not a vehicle history report: it does not show accidents, mileage, owners or theft records. For a used car, compare the decoded data with the documents and the car itself — a mismatch in model year, engine or body is a red flag.
vPIC is built from manufacturer submissions for vehicles sold in the USA (most data from model year 1981). VINs of cars built for other markets may decode partially. We do not store who checked which VIN. Results pages are not indexed by search engines.
