Cars that fit three child seats across the back: nine models tested by ADAC

Updated 9 cars in this ranking

Three child seats side by side is one of the hardest tests a family car can face. Most cars have Isofix mounts only on the two outer rear seats, the middle seat is narrow, and the bulky sides of modern seats press against each other and against the doors. In July 2026 ADAC, Germany's motoring club, published its list of cars in which three child seats fit across one row, checked during its full Autotest. Only 12 current new models passed, and only one of them is an SUV. The nine cars below come from that list and have a 1cars model page.

The most useful detail is the number of Isofix mounts. In six of the current new models and ten of the used ones, ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts side by side, which makes fitting much easier: Isofix seats can be slid sideways more easily than belted seats, according to ADAC. In the other cars the third seat is held by the three-point belt. ADAC tested seats with a backrest; backless booster cushions were not part of the test. Our guide to child car seats, i-Size and R44 explains the seat standards.

The third-generation Berlingo is the most affordable route to three child seats in a row with Isofix. ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts side by side on the rear bench of cars built from September 2018. Its tall, square body makes it easy to lean in and strap children in. ADAC's senior-car measurements put the seat 605 mm above the road and the boot sill at 565 mm. It is sold with petrol, diesel and electric drive with 74 to 96 kW. The drawbacks: a van-based interior and a four-star Euro NCAP rating from 2018.

    Pros

    • Three Isofix mounts in the rear
    • 605 mm seat height, 565 mm boot sill
    • Petrol, diesel or electric

    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel, Electric
    Power output
    55–100 kW (75–136 PS)

The Rifter is Peugeot's version of the same high-roof design and, like the Berlingo, has three Isofix mounts side by side in the rear, according to ADAC. It has been built since September 2018 and is 4,403 mm long in its standard form. The 1cars catalogue lists petrol engines with 81 and 96 kW, diesels from 55 to 96 kW and an electric version, and the 1.2 PureTech 130 can be ordered with the eight-speed EAT8 automatic. The choice between Rifter and Berlingo comes down to price and equipment. The drawback: Euro NCAP gave it four stars in 2018, not five.

    Pros

    • Three Isofix mounts in the rear
    • EAT8 automatic available
    • Petrol, diesel or electric

    Cons

    • Four-star Euro NCAP (2018)

It is the newest conventional MPV in ADAC's list. Euro NCAP's 2022 test of the 1.5 TSI gave 81 per cent for child occupant protection. The drawback: no new Touran is built, so only used cars remain.

    • Five or seven seats
    • Car-like to drive

    Production years
    2017–2024
    Body type
    SUV
    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, Electric

The second-generation 5008 turned Peugeot's MPV into a seven-seat SUV. Its second row consists of three independent seats that slide and recline, which helps three child seats fit side by side, and ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts for cars built from March 2017 to September 2020. The wheelbase measures 2.84 m. In the ANCAP test aligned with Euro NCAP it scored 85 per cent for child occupant protection. Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel, Plug-in hybrid
    Power output
    140–335 kW (190–455 PS)

ADAC names the XC90 Plug-in Hybrid built from September 2024 as the only current SUV that takes three child seats across one row. The second-generation XC90, on sale since 2015, is 4,950 mm long and has seven seats, and Euro NCAP awarded it five stars in 2015. The plug-in hybrid is the most powerful version, with up to 335 kW in the 1cars catalogue. The drawbacks: ADAC does not state how many Isofix mounts sit side by side, and the XC90 is a large, expensive car to use for this job alone.

    Pros

    • Only current SUV in ADAC's list
    • Seven seats
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2015)

    Cons

    • Number of Isofix mounts not stated

The second-generation Sharan, launched at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, has sliding rear doors and seven seats, and ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts side by side for cars built from April 2015 to June 2022. Its twin, the SEAT Alhambra, also passes ADAC's test. In Euro NCAP's 2019 test of the 1.4 TSI it scored 89 per cent for adult and 78 per cent for child occupant protection. Production in Portugal ended in 2022 without a replacement. The drawbacks: only used cars remain, and the design dates from 2010.

    • Sliding rear doors
    • Seven seats

    Cons

    • No longer built; design from 2010

    Body type
    Minibus
    Fuel
    Diesel
    Power output
    75–130 kW (102–177 PS)

The Zafira Life is a van-based people carrier, and ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts side by side for the version built from July 2019. The 1cars catalogue lists diesel engines from 75 to 130 kW. It suits large families who regularly carry three children plus adults or luggage. The drawbacks: it is a large van to drive and park every day, and Euro NCAP has published no result for it in our catalogue.

    • Three Isofix mounts side by side
    • Room for wide child seats
    • Seats for a large family

    Petrol, Diesel, Plug-in hybrid
    Power output
    160–373 kW (218–507 PS)

The second-generation Q7 is the premium option. ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts side by side for the latest version, built from April 2024 to April 2026. The car is 5,050 mm long, can have seven seats and has petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines from 160 to 373 kW, according to the 1cars catalogue. Euro NCAP gave the second generation five stars in 2019. The drawbacks: ADAC's confirmation covers only the last two years of production, so an older Q7 needs its own check, and it is a large premium SUV with prices to match.

    Pros

    • Three Isofix mounts (2024–2026 cars)
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2019)
    • Up to seven seats

How we chose

Selection. The list uses ADAC's overview of cars with room for three child seats side by side (31 July 2026). ADAC includes only models that went through its full Autotest, in which three child seats had to fit in the second or third row, secured by Isofix or by the three-point belt; booster cushions without a backrest were excluded. ADAC names 12 current new models and 32 used models. Of those, the nine below have a 1cars model page. Models without one include the Ford Tourneo Connect, Opel Combo Life, Toyota Proace City Verso, Citroën Spacetourer, Kia PV5, SEAT Alhambra, Ford Galaxy and S-MAX, and Renault Espace V.

Data sources. Which cars fit three seats, the tested production periods and the number of Isofix mounts come from ADAC. Body facts, production dates and seat layouts come from Wikipedia and the 1cars catalogue. ADAC does not publish interior widths or the seat models it used, so a fitting test with the family's own seats before buying remains essential.

Ranking. The order is editorial: three Isofix mounts first, then availability as a new car, then price and size. A rear-facing seat on the front passenger seat is possible in many cars, but ADAC reminds that the passenger airbag must then be switched off.

Frequently asked questions

Which cars can take three child seats across the back?

In ADAC's July 2026 list, 12 current new models pass, including the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter, Renault Kangoo, Volkswagen Caddy, Opel Zafira Life, Mercedes-Benz EQV and Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid. Used choices include the Volkswagen Touran and Sharan, Peugeot 5008 II and Audi Q7.

Which cars have three Isofix points in a row?

ADAC confirms three Isofix mounts side by side in six new models (Citroën Berlingo and Spacetourer, Opel Combo Life and Zafira Life, Peugeot Rifter, Toyota Proace City Verso) and in ten used ones, among them the Volkswagen Touran and Sharan, Peugeot 5008 II and Audi Q7.

Is there an SUV that fits three child seats?

Among current new cars, only the Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid built from September 2024, according to ADAC. Used SUVs that pass are the Audi Q7 built from April 2024 to April 2026, the Peugeot 5008 II, the Citroën C5 Aircross (2019–2022) and the first Dacia Duster (2013–2017).

Do I need Isofix for all three seats?

No. ADAC also accepted seats fitted with the car's three-point belt. Isofix makes fitting easier, because Isofix seats can be moved sideways more easily, which helps when three seats must share the width of the bench.

Can a child seat go on the front passenger seat?

In many cars it can, but a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat is only allowed with the passenger airbag switched off. ADAC points this out in its overview.
