Which EX90 to buy: verdict
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
Buy a 2026 model-year car. It costs about the same as the 2024 Single Motor in Germany but has 245 kW instead of 205 kW, an 800-volt system and much faster DC charging, and it comes with the newer central computer from the factory. The Single Motor is sufficient for most families; the Twin Motor adds all-wheel drive and range. A used 2025 car can be good value, but check that the free computer replacement has been carried out.
The Volvo EX90 is a seven-seat electric SUV, 5,037 mm long, and the first bespoke electric car marketed under the Volvo brand. Revealed in November 2022 and built since May 2024 at Ridgeville in South Carolina and in China, it is the electric counterpart to the XC90. Its first year was overshadowed by software problems, and for the 2026 model year Volvo switched it to an 800-volt system with new batteries and up to 500 kW (680 PS).
In short
- One generation (model code V536) on Volvo's SPA2 platform, related to the Polestar 3; production since May 2024.

Volvo EX90 at a glance: segment, body and where it is built
The EX90 is a large five-door SUV with three rows of seats. Robin Page's design team previewed it with the Concept Recharge in June 2021, and the car was reported under the working name Embla before its reveal. The drag coefficient is 0.29.
Production started in May 2024 at the Volvo Car Charleston plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina. Wikipedia also lists assembly in China (Chengdu) and at Shah Alam in Malaysia. The platform, SPA2, is shared with the Polestar 3 and the Volvo ES90 saloon. For the Chinese market Volvo showed a four-seat EX90 Excellence at Auto Shanghai in April 2023.

Generations and model-year versions
There is one generation, but two technical phases.
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (hp / kW) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EX90 (I), 400 V | V536 | 2024-2025 | 5-door SUV, 6/7 seats | 1 or 2 electric motors, 101-107 kWh net | 205-380 kW (279-517 PS) |
| EX90 (I), 800 V | V536 | since 2025 (MY2026) | 5-door SUV, 6/7 seats | 1 or 2 electric motors, 92 or 106 kWh | 245-500 kW (333-680 PS) |
The launch cars carried a 104 kWh (101 kWh net) or 111 kWh (107 kWh net) CATL battery, the latter shared with the Polestar 3. EV Database lists the 800-volt Single Motor as orderable since September 2025. The 2026 cars also received a new central computer based on Nvidia's Drive AGX Orin, which Volvo later fitted free of charge to all 2025 model-year cars.

Electric motors, battery and performance
| Version (model years) | Battery (net) | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h | WLTP range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Motor (2024-2025) | 101 kWh | 205 kW (279 PS) | 490 Nm | 8.4 s | 624 km (ADAC) |
| Twin Motor (2024-2025) | 107 kWh | 300 kW (408 PS) | 770 Nm | 5.9 s | about 600 km |
| Twin Motor Performance (2024-2025) | 107 kWh | 380 kW (517 PS) | 910 Nm | 4.9 s | 590 km |
| Single Motor (from MY2026) | 88 kWh | 245 kW (333 PS) | 480 Nm | 6.8 s | 572 km |
| Twin Motor (from MY2026) | 106 kWh gross | 335 kW (455 PS) | - | - | up to 608 km |
| Twin Motor Performance (from MY2026) | 106 kWh gross | 500 kW (680 PS) | - | - | up to 602 km |
Every EX90 is limited to 180 km/h. The 2026 ranges for the Twin Motor versions are Volvo UK's figures of 378 and 374 miles, converted. Charging improved considerably with the switch to 800 volts: the early cars accepted up to 250 kW DC (ADAC lists 235 kW and 30 minutes to 80%), while EV Database lists a 310 kW peak and 22 minutes from 10 to 80% for the 2026 Single Motor. AC charging is 11 kW, and the car supports bidirectional charging.
Dimensions, interior space and boot capacity
| Parameter | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 5,037 mm | 198.3 in |
| Width (without mirrors) | 1,964 mm | 77.3 in |
| Height | 1,744 mm | 68.7 in |
| Wheelbase | 2,985 mm | 117.5 in |
| Kerb weight (Single Motor, MY2026) | 2,555 kg | 5,633 lb |
| Boot, all seats in use (ADAC) | 324 l | 11.4 cu ft |
| Boot, maximum (ADAC) | 2,082 l | 73.5 cu ft |
| Front boot (ADAC, 2024 car) | 49 l | 1.7 cu ft |
| Power / torque (Single Motor, MY2026) | 245 kW (333 PS) / 480 Nm | 354 lb-ft |
| Battery (Single Motor, MY2026) | 88 kWh net | - |
EV Database quotes 669 litres for the rear load space and 1,955 litres maximum, and a front boot of 34 litres for the 2026 car; its method differs from ADAC's. The third row is tight for adults: What Car? reported that a 180 cm passenger could not sit upright there. With a width of 2,113 mm including mirrors (ADAC) and a length of over five metres, it is worth checking the garage fit tool before ordering.
Energy consumption and running costs
ADAC lists 18.1 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle for the 2024 Single Motor. EV Database gives 18.3 to 19.0 kWh/100 km for the 2026 Single Motor and estimates 20.7 kWh/100 km in real driving, which equals about 425 km of range. The high-voltage battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 km (to 70% state of health), the car itself for three years. Use the cost of ownership calculator to compare charging at home with public fast charging.
Trims and equipment
In Germany the 2024 Single Motor Core cost EUR 86,000 (ADAC). EV Database lists EUR 85,990 for the 2026 Single Motor, despite the larger power output and faster charging. The launch specification centred on the safety hardware: a Luminar lidar sensor in the roof line, able to detect pedestrians up to 250 m away, eight cameras, five radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Inside, a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Cockpit platform with a 5G connection. Volvo's 2026 UK media material describes the sensor set as cameras and radars and does not mention lidar.

Safety ratings: Euro NCAP 2025
Euro NCAP tested the EX90 in 2025 and awarded five stars.
| Area | Score |
|---|---|
| Adult occupant | 92% |
| Child occupant | 93% |
| Vulnerable road users | 82% |
| Safety assist | 86% |
ANCAP published an aligned rating with almost identical percentages. Before the car went on sale it received the AJAC award for the best safety innovation in Canada. All tested results are on our safety ratings page.
Reliability and known issues
Software has been the EX90's documented weak point. InsideEVs reported in September 2025 that Volvo would replace the central computer in every 2025 model-year EX90 with the unit from the 2026 car, free of charge. Owners had reported unreliable phone-as-key and key-card unlocking, failed phone connections and, on an earlier software version, limited power when accelerating. Volvo said the latest software patch had largely solved the key problems. Sales reflected the slow start: 1,806 cars worldwide in 2024, and 3,913 in the United States in 2025.
Rivals: how the EX90 compares
| Model | Engines | Power (hp) | Boot (l) | Price from (EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo EX90 Single Motor (MY2026) | electric, 88 kWh net | 245 kW (333 PS) | 324 (ADAC) | 85,990 (DE, 2025) |
| Kia EV9 Air | electric, 99.8 kWh | 150 kW (204 PS) | 333 (ADAC) | 66,690 (DE, 2025) |
| Hyundai IONIQ 9 Performance AWD | electric, 106 kWh net | 315 kW (428 PS) | 908 (EV Database) | 86,750 (DE, 2025) |
The Kia is the value choice among seven-seat electric SUVs, almost EUR 20,000 cheaper. The Hyundai costs about the same as the Volvo with more power and two driven axles. The EX90's strengths are its Euro NCAP result, the 800-volt charging of the 2026 cars and its April 2025 World Luxury Car award.
