Generations and versions

The ES90 is in its first generation, so the useful split is by drivetrain.

Generation Code Years Body styles Engines Power (kW / hp)
ES90 V551 2025- 5-door liftback electric, 1 or 2 motors 245-500 kW / 329-671 hp

Twin Motor 335 kW (456 PS) - 106 / 103 kWh all-wheel EUR 81,590 (Plus, 03/2026)
Twin Motor Performance 500 kW (680 PS) 870 Nm 106 / 103 kWh all-wheel EUR 87,090 (Plus, 03/2026)

Volvo showed the car in the Stockholm archipelago in March 2025. ADAC lists the Single Motor and the Ultra versions of the twin-motor cars from December 2025; cheaper Plus versions of the twin-motor cars followed in March 2026. In China a base version with a 77 kWh LFP battery is also listed.

AC charging 11 kW 11 kW
Kerb weight (EU) 2,410 kg (5,313 lb) 2,610 kg (5,754 lb)

The figures come from ADAC's German data sheets. Wikipedia lists slightly different early figures for the twin-motor car, 330 kW (443 hp) and 670 Nm with 5.5 seconds to 100 km/h and 700 km WLTP, and for the single-motor car 650 km and 6.9 seconds; we use the ADAC data throughout. On a 350 kW charger the car adds about 300 km of range in ten minutes. Rated range and charging speeds of other models are in our electric cars section.

Dimensions, space and boot

Parameter Metric Imperial

Height 1,547 mm 60.9 in

Towing, braked / unbraked 1,600 / 750 kg 3,527 / 1,653 lb

Boot figures vary with the measuring method: Wikipedia quotes 425 l and 1,256 l with a 22 l frunk, while ADAC lists 442 l, 1,445 l and 27 l. The rear seat folds 40:20:40. At 5.0 m long and 2.12 m wide with mirrors, the ES90 is a big car for older city garages and multi-storey car parks.

Running costs and warranty

ADAC data show WLTP consumption of 15.5 kWh/100 km for the Single Motor and 16.5 kWh/100 km for the Twin Motor Performance. Over 15,000 km a year, that is about 2,300 to 2,500 kWh of electricity at the WLTP rate, before charging losses; the cost of ownership calculator turns that into money at your own tariff. The car is rated to tow up to 1,600 kg braked, enough for a small caravan or a boat trailer. Volvo's German warranty is two years on the vehicle, two years on paint and 12 years against perforation, with three years of Europe-wide mobility cover. The high-voltage battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 km, guaranteeing 70% of its capacity.

Equipment and technology

All ES90s get adaptive dampers and dual-chamber air suspension, the same setup as the EX90. The cabin has a 9-inch driver display, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, four-zone climate control and a panoramic roof, and a Bowers & Wilkins system with 25 speakers and Dolby Atmos is available.

For driver assistance the ES90 carries one lidar, five radars, seven cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors, processed by two Nvidia Drive AGX Orin computers rated at 508 TOPS. German trims are called Core, Plus and Ultra.

Safety

At the time of writing we have not found a published Euro NCAP rating for the ES90. Its SPA2 sister, the EX90, received five stars from Euro NCAP in November 2025, and Volvo notes that the EX90's driver understanding system, which monitors the driver's attention, is also available in the ES90. A separate ES90 result should not be assumed from that. See the safety rankings for rated cars.

Reliability and known issues

The ES90 has been on sale for less than a year, and there is no sourced long-term reliability data yet. We do not list any problems.

Rivals

The ES90 competes with the large electric saloons of the German brands and with Volvo's own sister brand Polestar.

BMW i5 - - - -
Mercedes-Benz EQE - - - -
Audi A6 Sportback e-tron - - - -
Polestar 4 - - - -

Auto Express's video review measures the ES90 directly against the Polestar 4, the cheaper electric car from Volvo's sister brand. Against the German rivals, the ES90's case rests on its 3,102 mm wheelbase, an 800-volt system with up to 350 kW charging, and WLTP ranges of more than 650 km even in the entry version.
