Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For a used bargain: a late W415 with the 2020-2021 six-speed 1.5 diesel (69 or 85 kW).
- For a new van: the W420 110 CDI or 112 CDI; the diesel has 260-270 Nm and suits loaded work.
- For town deliveries: the eCitan, with the same load space as the diesel and 90 kW.
- For families: look at the T-Class or EQT rather than the van-based Tourer.
The Mercedes-Benz Citan is Mercedes' smallest van, a badge-engineered version of the Renault Kangoo built by Renault at Maubeuge in northern France. Two generations have been sold: the W415 from 2012 to 2021 and the W420, launched in August 2021, which is also the basis of the T-Class MPV, the electric eCitan and the EQT. In April 2025 Mercedes-Benz executives said the Citan family would be discontinued in 2026.
In short
- Two generations: W415 (2012-2021) and W420 (2021-2026), both built alongside the Kangoo in Maubeuge, France.
- W420 engines: 1.3 turbo petrol with 75 or 96 kW (102 or 131 PS), 1.5 diesel with 55 to 85 kW (75 to 116 PS); eCitan with 90 kW and a 44 kWh battery.
- The W420 panel van carries up to 2.9 m3 (L1) or 3.6 m3 (long L2), with a payload of up to 782 kg.
- The first Citan got three stars from Euro NCAP in 2013; the second-generation Citan Tourer and T-Class scored five stars in 2022.

W415 (2012-2021): the first Citan
Mercedes-Benz presented the first Citan in 2012 as a joint product with Renault. It was assembled in Maubeuge by Renault subsidiary MCA, on the same line as the Kangoo. Three body lengths were offered: compact (3.94 m), long (4.32 m) and extra-long (4.71 m, also used for the Dualiner crew van). The panel van seats two; the Dualiner and the passenger Traveliner seat up to five.

W420 (2021-2026): new platform, more Mercedes
The second Citan was launched in August 2021 as a panel van and Tourer. It is based on the third-generation Kangoo and Renault-Nissan's CMF-CD platform. Mercedes gave it its own front end with headlights borrowed from the pre-facelift B-Class. The same base became the T-Class passenger MPV in April 2022, which replaced the Citan Tourer as Mercedes' family model, and the electric EQT, shown in production form in December 2022.
For vans built from October 2025, UK van press reports a 112 version with 85 kW (116 hp) and 270 Nm that comes with an automatic gearbox as standard, and a payload increase of 201 kg for the entry L1 Base van.

| Citan 110 CDI | 1.5 diesel, 1,461 cc | 70 kW (95 PS) | 260 Nm | 6-speed manual |
| Citan 112 CDI | 1.5 diesel, 1,461 cc | 85 kW (116 PS) | 270 Nm | 6-speed manual |
| eCitan | Electric motor, 44 kWh battery | 90 kW (122 PS) | 245 Nm | single speed |
A seven-speed automatic was available on selected engines from launch. The eCitan was announced in October 2021 and arrived in the second half of 2022. Its eight-module lithium-ion battery (44 kWh usable) sits under the floor ahead of the rear axle, so the load space is the same as in the diesel van. Wikipedia quotes 285 km WLTP in its text and 299 km in its table; Fleet News gave "around 175 miles" (about 280 km) at the reveal. AC charging is 11 kW as standard, with an optional 22 kW AC charger; rapid charging takes 10-80% in about 40 minutes at 75 kW DC.

Mercedes quoted a maximum payload of 782 kg for the panel van at launch; in the UK, the 110 CDI L1 is listed with 486-664 kg depending on trim, and the electric L1 with 428-448 kg. If you plan to park the van at home, our garage fit checker uses length, width and height.
Running costs and prices
In Germany the second-generation Citan started at EUR 19,348 net for the Citan 110 panel van with the 75 kW (102 PS) petrol engine; the Tourer cost EUR 22,253 net (Firmenauto, September 2021). The electric EQT passenger version started at EUR 49,444.50 when prices were announced in June 2023. Running costs follow the Kangoo closely, because engines, gearboxes and most wearing parts are shared.
Trims and equipment
The W420 offered adaptive cruise control and Active Steering Assist, systems taken from Mercedes' passenger cars. The Tourer and the later T-Class seat five; a long-wheelbase T-Class with seven seats in three rows was announced. Each sliding side door of the panel van opens to 615 mm.
Safety: Euro NCAP
- W415: the Citan Kombi was tested in April 2013 and received three stars. After changes by Mercedes, Euro NCAP reassessed it; the Traveliner was later rated four stars.
- W420: in 2022 Euro NCAP gave five stars to both the Citan Tourer and the T-Class. For the T-Class test (T 160, left-hand drive) the scores were 91% adult occupant, 93% child occupant, 69% vulnerable road users and 90% safety assist.
- Commercial van rating: in March 2024 the Citan panel van received a Platinum rating in Euro NCAP's commercial van assessment of active safety systems.
Reliability and known issues
We have not found Citan-specific reliability statistics from a large survey. The mechanical parts are shared with the Renault Kangoo and, for the petrol engine, with Nissan, so recalls and service bulletins for the Kangoo of the same years are worth checking when buying a used Citan.
