Volkswagen Caddy is a front or all-wheel drive passenger car model that belongs to the niche of LAVs. The German model is available in two versions: compact van and van. The vehicle is directed to a completely different target audience. This car appeared for the first time under the nameplate Volkswagen back in 1979.
From the very beginning, the car was only a utility distribution machine. Already after 1996, the Caddy received a passenger and cargo modification. I generation (1979-1986)
It is not always the case that Volkswagen vehicles were initially assembled at the assembly line of the Wolfsburg plant or at the company’s other European facilities. For some time, the machine was produced and sold primarily in overseas markets, and only then was it delivered to European dealerships.
A living example of this is the commercial, passenger and cargo vehicle Volkswagen Caddy. Aiming initially at the European market, the management of the German company did not forget about the “tidbits” of the American and African markets. In the North American market, pickups – small, medium and full-size – have been common all their lives, so the company’s management decided to launch its own version of the pickup to this market.
As for the “trolley”, exterior and interior decoration for the new car, all this was decided to borrow from the debut family of Golf. Production of the car was established in Pennsylvania, where it was produced from 1979 to 1982 under the name of Rabbit. The model was available for the European market since 1982, and its production was established in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It was the European version that got the famous name Caddy, which literally means “a boy who brings clubs and balls while playing golf”. The name was very useful, as the novelty was positioned as an assistant machine for both a compact commercial company and for large families.
Interestingly, given the long history of the existence of this machine, this machine dispersed throughout the world in circulation of more than 2 500 000 copies.
On the outside, the “American” and “European” were different in type in front of the headlights. European version received round headlights, and American – rectangular. The truck in the truck version had a rather massive trunk both open (pickup) and closed (minivan), which allowed to transport a small cargo. The vehicle had a payload of up to 500 kg.
Passenger execution of the car received up to 7 seats. At the time of creation, the Caddy used the basic method for those years: took a serial passenger car, lengthened its base, instead of the aft part of the body attached the cargo area and strengthened the aft suspension.
As we said before, from the very beginning the German “heel” was created only for the role of a delivery van, because its interior is not fully suitable for the transport of people. We decided to take the appearance of the Polo – it is clearly visible in the nose area of the body to the doors and exterior mirrors.
This is unusual, but South Africa continued to produce the “original Caddy” until 2007.
The car was 4,380 millimeters long, 1,640 millimeters wide and 1,490 millimeters high. The length between the axles is 2,626 millimeters. The car weighs a minimum of 1,050 kilograms, and the maximum weight is slightly more than 1,600 kilograms. For the German practical car, which received the internal index “Tour 14”, offered a serious range of engines.
Gasoline lineup is represented by 4-cylinder atmospheric power units of volume from 1.3 to 1.8 liters. Such “engines” produce from 60 to 95 “horses” and from 93 to 120 Nm of maximum thrust. The diesel side was represented by a single 1.6-liter 55 hp engine, which received 120 Nm. All engines worked only with a five-speed manual gearbox.
All torque was only transmitted to the front wheels. As a base they put the famous “cart” from the “Golf” mK1, which they decided to lengthen, and instead of the rear part of the body to install a cargo area. Volkswagen Caddy I generation has an independent type of suspension with screw springs at the front and a dependent spring structure at the rear.
All wheels have drum brakes. At the time when the car was produced, it was famous for its reliability, unpretentiousness, compactness and availability. The model was very practical, despite the Spartan interior.
II generation (1996-2003)
The second version of the already known machine received the internal index Typ 9K and was officially released in 1996. The vehicle was moved from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Spain. The Spanish company produced Caddy on one conveyor assembly together with SEAT Inca, which was a modified version of the “German”.
The car was built on the newest “trolley” A03 from Polo 3rd family. The debut car had an angular exterior design, but the second version of the Volkswagen Caddy already had streamlined shape. This has had a good impact on aerodynamics and economy. If before there was a rectangular grille, now it was installed a smaller version, which received a U-shaped type.
You can also see the rounded headlights in the front. The stern lanterns are shaped like an inverted cone. If you compare the car with the previous generation, the novelty has acquired rear doors with different sizes. Thanks to this, loading in the city limits became more practical and comfortable.
The front bumper received three compartments of air intakes, and the rear bumper was equipped with a favorable notch, which reduces the loading height. The vehicle already had an ABS system, electric power steering, pollen filter air conditioner, driver’s and passenger airbag (optional), head restraints and three-point safety belts.
Since 2000, there has been a real revolution in the caravan market. The world’s leading automotive companies have begun to introduce fresh vehicles, designed not only for cargo transportation, but also for passenger use. Renault Digging launched Kangoo, Opel introduced Combo and Ford introduced Tourneo.
It is important to note that some automotive markets had a version of the “Caddy pickup” in the 2nd family, which received its own internal index Typ 9U. In reality, it was a Skoda Felicia Pickup with a Volkswagen badge. The technical equipment of the car had a considerable list of power units operating on gasoline and “heavy” fuel.
The gasoline list consisted of four engines, ranging in volume from 1.4 litres to 1.6 litres, which produced 60-75 horsepower and 116-135 Nm of maximum thrust. The diesel line had four-cylinder engines with a capacity starting at 1.7 and ending at 1.9 litres. They allowed to produce from 57-90 “mare” and from 112-210 Nm of torque. All engines were synchronized only with a five-speed gearbox on the “mechanics”.
As a basis for the VW Caddy 2 generation (Typ 9K) took the platform A03, where there are McPherson tines in front and spring suspension at the back. The vehicle is equipped with disc brakes at the front and classic drums at the rear. The second-generation machine is easier to operate thanks to the installation of hydraulic power steering.
Based on the feedback from the owners of Volkswagen Caddy II generation, the machine is reliable, unpretentious, “working”, with a pleasant appearance, ergonomic interior design, tractive and economical power units. Also, the car has good handling, spacious cargo department in the version of the van, solid load capacity, low fuel “appetite” and affordable service.
Among the drawbacks of the model we can mention the rigid suspension (if you move empty), cheap interior decoration materials and not too comfortable (for long trips) seats.
III generation (2004-2015)
The third generation of the already popular at that time Volkswagen Caddy was released in March 2004 at the exhibition “The Commercial Vehicle Show”. At the end of 2010, this vehicle was subjected to “planned improvement”. As a result, the exterior was adapted to the modern style of the company Volkswagen.
In addition, German specialists have improved the interior decoration and level of equipment. The car was built on the chassis of Golf V and half of VW Touran. The new model has an abundance of different parts from previous generations. Now Volkswagen Caddy is a single-volume model – its body was decided to make a single whole (like a minivan).
The cargo area was not separated from the driver. The exterior of the truck has smooth and quiet lines, correct shapes and flat surfaces, but even in this case the truck looks modern and harmonious. The nose part of the car has a large head optics, a relief bumper and characteristic punches on the hood.
It is already common that the cars of the German company have a simple and laconic body design. It is important to remind that the family versions owe their birth to the standard commercial car Volkswagen Caddy Kasten. Therefore, it makes no sense to spend time searching for bright and stylish solutions in the appearance of the car.

It has xenon headlights, front and rear fog lights, rails, towbar, glass with different degrees of tinting, moldings on bumpers and doors. The interior space is very familiar to those who used to drive VW cars. If you sit behind the driver’s seat, you can see a comfortable steering wheel, which in expensive configurations is multifunctional, simple “dashboard” with clear “digitization” and good information.
The centrally mounted console looks sharp and functional. All controls are ergonomically positioned. In contrast to the vehicle equipment, the torpedo can have air conditioner regulators or a full-fledged climate control system, plastic plugs, music system control unit or 12-centimeter multimedia screen.
Raising the theme of finishing materials, it is worth saying that they are generally good-quality and pleasant to the touch, but in some places you can find cheap hard plastic. There are alcantara and genuine leather. All clearances are minimal. Salon VW Caddy 3 generation has a large number of drawers and compartments for the safety of various trifles.
It is possible to order a pull-out luggage compartment floor that can withstand loads of up to 80 kilograms. The Volkswagen Caddy III family features a front-facing, comfortable front seats that are optimally profiled and packed. The seats have a wide range of adjustment in different directions. The rear part received a fairly simple sofa, “formed” for 3 passengers.
There is plenty of room everywhere, but the presence of a transmission tunnel and a podium with air ducts, can cause some discomfort for the passenger sitting in the center. As a separate option, the standard version can be fitted with a 3rd row of seats. The “Maxi” version has a gallery already from the factory.
Taking into account the usual execution of the “heel”, it takes on board up to 750 liters of luggage, but when installed in the luggage compartment of two additional seats, the volume is reduced to a modest 190 liters. When more free space is needed, the 2nd row of seats can be removed, which provides 2,852 litres of usable space. It is 1,354 millimetres long, 1,243 millimetres high and 1,120 millimetres wide.
The long wheelbase design looks more spacious: there are seven seats and 530 litres of free space. If you remove the 3rd row of seats, the boot will increase to 1,650 litres. With the two rear rows folded together, the volume increases to an impressive 3,950 litres. This hold has a length of 1,824 millimeters, a height of 1,243 millimeters, and a width of 1,170 millimeters.
Based on owner feedback, the rear suspension can safely transport loads of up to 1,000 kilograms. Russian motorists could buy a third family of Caddy with a pair of gasoline units and a single diesel engine. The weakest is the 1.2-liter, 85-horsepower TSI unit (160 Nm), which can accelerate this minivan to a speed of 100 kilometers per hour in 14.7 seconds.
The speed limit is 155 kilometers per hour. Consumption of the junior “engine” at the level of 6 liters of gasoline outside the city and up to 8.2 liters in urban mode. Next comes a gasoline 1.2-liter, 105-horsepower version (175 Nm), which can reach the first hundred kilometers in 12.4 seconds, and a maximum speed of about 170 kilometers per hour.
Based on the passport, the model consumes about 6 liters of gasoline along the route, and in the city cycle – 8 liters. The diesel side is represented by a 2.0-liter, 110-horsepower TDI engine (250 Nm), which provides acceleration up to 100 km/h in the same 12.4 seconds as the 105-horsepower version. “Maximalka” is also identical – 170 kilometers per hour. But the appetite of the diesel engine is slightly less: in the city up to 7 liters, in the country from 5 liters of diesel fuel.
Gasoline engines received a five-speed manual gearbox, and diesel version has an automatic robotic gearbox with 2 clutch disks 6 DSG. As mentioned earlier, the car was built on the passenger platform “Golf” in 2003. All versions have a front independent suspension with McPherson racks with shock-absorbing racks, which received swiveling fists, as well as triangular transverse levers.
The suspension structure was adjusted specifically for this vehicle. The Caddy suspension is very similar to the Golf suspension. This provides an improved level of comfort and high dynamics. The key features of the suspension have triangular transverse levers, aluminum sub-frame, bearing units of the wheels of the 3-rd family, separate transmission of forces from shock absorbers and springs to the body by means of rubber-metal support and an active speed sensor.
The rear part received a dependent spring type suspension. With continuous axle. As a braking system there are disk mechanisms on all wheels. There is a reinforced double-circuit brake system. IV generation (2015-present)
Formally, the Volkswagen leadership insists on the designation of the Caddy, which was shown to everyone in Geneva in 2015, as a fundamentally new machine of the fourth generation. This is not an upgrade, although in reality the Caddy 4 generation is not the result of a major upheaval. It is rather a logical continuation of the third family.
Many motorists will be glad that the new Volkswagen Caddy presented a large number of modifications. The buyer can buy the model as a commercial van, a comfortable minivan or a family car.
Looks like the new Caddy is beautiful. The nose area has not changed so much. The front end has fundamentally new headlights, which received a diamond shape. Similarly, the “fog lights” and the new radiator grille began to look like this. The latter looks like a narrow horizontal strip, which is decorated with the same horizontal lines of chrome.
The body of the car has strict features. German specialists managed to make the correct restyling, which allows the novelty to look stylish, elegant and presentable. Thanks to the stampings on the hood, the front end has a certain zest. The side part shows that the company decided to change the angle of inclination of the front glass in order to increase visibility.
The model has fundamentally new side mirrors, and the front fenders and doors have a clear rib stamping, elegantly emphasizing the sill line. The side is equipped with large doorways, a significantly increased glazing area and a flat roof surface, which has functional rails. The vehicle seems to be an aristocrat, a representative of the upper class, although it also performs cargo transportation tasks.
Rear part of Volkswagen Caddy 4 generation has expressive overall lights, LED lights, which received a rectangular shape and enlarged luggage compartment opening with a solid door. The door itself received an original, trapezoidal stamping for the license plate. All parameters show that the new Volkswagen Caddy is fresh and effective, even if it is compared with the restyled version of the previous generation.
Inside the new Volkswagen Caddy IV generation of changes can be found more. Experts have decided to significantly improve and redo it. Immediately the driver will be pleased to have a new dashboard and center console. These elements received strict, geometric shapes, but look stylish and solid.
The central part received a pair of rectangular deflectors, a modern block “climate”. And really decorates the whole picture with a color display designed for 6.33 inches, which supports touch screen input and navigation system. Many drivers will love the way the doors were designed. The seats themselves have passed on to the new generation from the previous version.
Instead of the outdated “wheel”, the company installed a new, slightly trimmed in a sporty style at the bottom of the multifunctional steering wheel, which has a very comfortable grip. A new door handle was installed. They have grown significantly as elements of finishing materials.
The interior decoration of Volkswagen Caddy 2018 has been fully replaced by a modern one, which is more practical and reliable. Despite all the innovations, the interior has not lost its functionality, which it had in the past generation.
With the latest generation in Volkswagen Caddy became much quieter, the vibrations from the diesel engines can almost not be observed, and the bare metal can be forgotten as a bad dream. It is very convenient for everyone to sit, there is enough space both above the head and in front of the feet.
Almost everything remained at the same level, but almost every element became a bit different. The climate control has not changed, it is located above the multimedia system, so it is a bit inconvenient to manage it. I am very glad that despite the presence of a large number of equipment, improved in terms of quality of materials, it did not affect the practicality.
The interior of the new Volkswagen Caddy continues to be one of the most functional. Many details migrated from the hatchback of the 7th family of “Golf”. The interior of the German “heel” can be decorated with carbon or metal inserts and elements of different colors. Expensive versions still receive genuine leather.
The “fourth” model has a five-seater interior layout, but a third row of seats (2 additional seats) can be installed as a separate option. The front seats received a comfortable profile. How easily the interior of this brand could be transformed has always been honored. On the second and third row of seats it is possible to fold and completely remove seats that finally gives huge volume for cargo transportation up to “4+ cubic meters” of useful space.
With seven seats, the boot received 190 liters, with 5 already 918 liters, and if you remove all the seats you get a large flat loading surface with 3,200 liters. Maxi” version even with seven armchairs has an impressive trunk, 530 liters in volume. Without the third row – 1 650 liters, and without all seats – 4 130 liters of useful volume.
The engine range has been upgraded to the Euro-6 level. The gasoline group was equipped with three engines. The weakest is the 1-liter, three-cylinder TSI engine, which produces 102 horsepower and 175 Nm. With this engine it is possible to accelerate up to 100 km/h in 12 seconds.
Next comes a 1.2-liter 84 hp engine. The most “powerful” is considered to be the gasoline 1.4-liter power plant, which produces 125 “horses”. Power units operating on “heavy” fuel are provided with 4 copies, with a single volume of 2.0 liters, but with different forcing. The role of the weakest is played by the 2.0-liter 75-horsepower engine, which provides good traction after 2,000 revolutions per minute.
Next comes the 102nd and 122nd horsepower engine. The top diesel version received 150 “mare” and is accelerated to the first hundred in 10 seconds. Diesel variants have a direct injection system and provide small fuel consumption and emissions.
Initial level engines are synchronized with a five-speed manual or 7-range DSG robotic gearbox (with two clutches). More powerful powertrains already work with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG wetter gearbox. The front wheel drive version is available from the start, but the 4MOTION all-wheel drive technology is available as an option.
The new Caddy is based on the PQ35 “trolley”, which has an independent suspension structure with McPherson racks in front and a dependent scheme with springs in the back. Vehicle made in Germany has a good braking system, where “in a circle” there are disk devices. All this is supplemented by electronic systems ABS + ESP. The compactor can be easily controlled by means of an installed electric amplifier.
The Germans have always been scrupulous about ensuring the proper level of safety for their own vehicles, and Caddy was no exception. For the first time, the engineering staff of VW AG decided to integrate a whole list of the latest technologies into the new generation. For example, the passenger version, already from the Trendline version, has not only side airbags, but also side airbags for front and rear passengers.
In addition, the model can be equipped with technology that knows how to control the distance ahead of Front Assist, which helps to reduce the braking distance. The technology features City Emergency Braking. When travelling at speeds of up to 30 kilometres per hour, when the owner cannot see a disturbance, the technology automatically starts to apply the braking function.
This helps to reduce the chance of a collision significantly in the best case scenario. Approximately 22 percent of all accidents that involve injuries to people sitting in the car are not caused by a single impact, but by several consecutive collisions with a series of obstacles. Thanks to the MultiCollision Brake system installed in the basic version, the chance of such a situation is minimized.
If a collision occurs, the technology in the automatic buckle activates the stabilisation braking function if the owner is unable to drive the vehicle on his own. The cruise control system is now equipped with a speed limit option. The owner will be able to adjust it to his own needs, for example, not to cross the speed limit in the city limits.
The same can be attributed to the system of adaptive cruise control, which is activated on a high-speed segment from 0 to 160 kilometers per hour (with DSG box) or from 30 to 150 kilometers per hour with “mechanics”. Optionally, some useful assistants can be installed. This includes the Light Assist headlight adjustment assistant and the system, which is able to determine the fatigue of Rest Assist.
She was taught to recognize deviations from the usual driving style and, when necessary, recommend to stop for rest. Together with information and multimedia systems Composition Color, Composition Media and Discover Media, you can optionally install the rear camera Rear Assist. Among the options, you can purchase a Park Assist to help you automatically control your car while parking.
This technology has an audible alert, which makes it much easier and helps the owner not to damage their vehicle or anything else. Even during maneuvers in a cramped place you can’t do without a visual schematic representation of the obstacle with a 360 degree visibility. The system was taught to display a picture of the car on the screen of the multimedia system from above.
With yellow and red marking, the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi owner can easily calculate the way to the front and back of the vehicle. As of 2017, the new product is sold in Russia with a large number of versions, with a drive for all four (4MOTION), with a standard or extended platform. The price starts at $19264. There is also a system of adaptive cruise control and a system that monitors the fatigue of the manager of the compact van.
Trendline equipment is estimated at $20020. It received an additional sliding door on the left, full-size wheel covers, door handles and exterior mirror bodies, leather steering wheel. It also provides for the installation of a central armrest, the function of heating the windshield, basic level multimedia system, socket in the luggage compartment and side airbags.
The Comfortline version features 15-inch or 16-inch light-alloy rollers, rails, a multimedia system with color screen, rear parking sensor and fog lights. The price list starts from 1 302 600 rubles. The car with Highline set can be bought from $24645. In addition to all the above mentioned, it has a bumper colored body color, combined upholstery of seats with alcantara, cruise control system and the option of automatic high beam.
For $23500 the Beach version will be available, which is equipped with a bed, curtains, duffel bags, folding tables and additional interior lighting. The Alltrack version completes the list of equipment with a protective plastic body, 17-inch wheel rims and aluminum pedal pads. It costs at least $23974.
Despite the release of a new generation “heel” and its new pleasant appearance, to keep it important to make a small tuning Volkswagen Caddy. External tuning includes installation of hood deflector, window deflector, powertrain protection, front bumper protection, kangaroo, rear bumper protection.

Based on the feedback from the owners, the machine is very practical, functional, spacious and quite inexpensive. The width of the interior decoration is more than enough, but to increase the space available the designers had to “sacrifice” the door armrests, so simply do not rely on anything. This can include any handles under the grip of the turns.
