Volkswagen Caddy at a glance

The Caddy is Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' smallest van, positioned below the Volkswagen Transporter. The name refers to a golf caddy, a nod to its origins in the Volkswagen Golf. Since 2003 it has been built at Poznań in Poland and sold both as a working van and, in Life or MPV form, as a family car with sliding side doors.

Volkswagen Caddy generations

First generation, Typ 14 (1979–1995)

The first Caddy was a coupé utility based on the A1 Golf. It began in North America in 1979 as the Rabbit Pickup, built at Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, and took the Caddy name in Europe in 1982, with production at TAS in Sarajevo from 1982 to 1992. European engines were the 1.5 and 1.6 petrol with 51–55 kW (69–75 PS) and a 1.6 diesel with 40 kW (54 PS). The pickup carried 500 kg (1,102 lb), and more than 207,000 were built; South Africa kept making it until 2007.

Second generation, 9K (1995–2004)

The second Caddy was a panel van derived from the SEAT Ibiza, a twin of the SEAT Inca, built at Martorell in Spain, while the 9U pickup was based on the Škoda Felicia and built at Kvasiny. Engines ranged from 1.4 and 1.6 petrol (44–55 kW) to 1.7 SDI, 1.9 SDI and the 1.9 TDI with 66 kW (90 PS). Payload was about 550 kg (1,213 lb) and load volume 2.9 m³ (102 cu ft).

Third generation, 2K (2003–2015)

Shown in October 2003 and built at Poznań from November 2003, the 2K shared about half of its modules with the Golf Mk5 and Touran. It added the Caddy Life MPV (2004 Geneva Motor Show), the long-wheelbase Maxi family (2007), 4Motion all-wheel drive (2008) and the rugged Cross Caddy (2012). Diesel engines ran from 1.6 TDI to the 2.0 TDI with up to 125 kW (170 PS), and a 2.0 EcoFuel natural-gas engine offered 80 kW (109 PS). It won UK Small Van of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

Fourth generation, 2K facelift (2015–2020)

Volkswagen counts the heavily revised 2015 Caddy as a new generation. It kept the 2K structure but brought new styling, Euro 6 engines, more driver assistance and the Caddy Alltrack. Euro NCAP gave the 2015 Caddy 2.0 TDI five stars.

Fifth generation, SB (2020 to today)

Unveiled in February 2020 and on sale from November 2020, the fifth Caddy is the first on the MQB platform shared with the Golf 8. It is offered as Cargo, as a five- or seven-seat MPV and as the Caddy California micro-camper, each in standard and Maxi length. The 2.0 TDI comes with 55, 75 and 90 kW (75, 102 and 122 PS), the 1.5 TSI with 84 kW (114 PS), and a TGI natural-gas version followed in July 2022. Ford sells a rebadged version as the Tourneo Connect from 2022.

Payload and load volumes

The SB Cargo has 1,613 mm (63.5 in) between the wheel arches, so a Euro pallet fits. In the seven-seat Caddy Life, the boot holds 190 litres with all seats in use and 918 litres with five seats; the Maxi Life still offers 530 litres with seven seats and up to 3,950 litres with both rear rows removed or folded.

Engines and transmissions

Diesels dominate Caddy sales. The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI of the 2K era and the Euro 6 2.0 TDI of the SB era are paired with manual gearboxes or a DSG dual-clutch automatic. Petrol options were the 1.2 TSI with 63–77 kW (85–105 PS) in the 2K, typically reaching 100 km/h in 12–15 seconds, and today's 1.5 TSI. Natural-gas EcoFuel and TGI versions appeal to fleets in countries with cheap CNG.

Caddy safety ratings

Euro NCAP rated the 2007 Caddy Life 1.9 TDI at four stars, the 2015 Caddy 2.0 TDI at five stars and the 2021 Caddy MPV and Cargo at five stars. The SB generation offers MQB-era assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane assist.

Caddy reliability and known faults

The Caddy shares its engines and running gear with the Golf and other Volkswagen Group cars, so parts are easy to find. On used 2K and 2K facelift vans, check:

• DSG gearbox behaviour and service history on automatic versions.
• Diesel particulate filter and EGR condition on vans used for short urban trips.
• Sliding door rollers and rear door hinges on hard-worked vans.
• Timing belt and water pump replacement on TDI engines, according to Volkswagen's schedule.

Rivals: how the Caddy compares

The Caddy competes with the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Renault Kangoo, Ford Transit Connect and Fiat Doblò. It is usually rated well for quality and car-like driving, while some rivals offer more load length or lower prices. Other small vans are listed among vans.
