Which EX30 to choose
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
The Single Motor Extended Range is the sensible choice for most drivers: 480 km of WLTP range, 153 kW charging and the same 200 kW output as the basic car. The 51 kWh Single Motor suits city use with charging at home. The Twin Motor Performance is extremely quick for a small SUV, and 3.6 seconds is more than most buyers need. In the German list of June 2023 it cost about €6,700 more than the Extended Range Core.
Before buying, sit in the back and check the boot: both are small for a family. Drivers who want a familiar instrument display should try the car first, because everything runs through the central screen. Volvo's other electric and hybrid models are on the Volvo catalogue page, and the brand's background is told in Volvo's history.
The Volvo EX30 is the brand's smallest car and its entry into the electric range: a compact SUV of 4.23 metres, revealed on 7 June 2023. It is built on Geely's SEA platform, the same base as the Smart #1 and Zeekr X, first in China and since 2025 also in Ghent, Belgium. Versions range from a 200 kW single-motor car with 344 km of WLTP range to the 315 kW Twin Motor Performance, which reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.
In short
- Two batteries: 51 kWh LFP (49 kWh usable) and 69 kWh NMC (64 kWh usable).
- WLTP range 344 km (Single Motor), 480 km (Extended Range) and 460 km (Twin Motor Performance).
- Twin Motor Performance: 315 kW (428 PS), 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.
- German list prices in June 2023 ran from €36,590 to €52,090.

Background and platform
Volvo did not develop a platform of its own for the EX30. It uses the SEA architecture of its parent company Geely, which also underpins the Smart #1 and the Zeekr X. The first cars were assembled in China; in 2025 production started at Volvo's plant in Ghent, Belgium, and in Shah Alam, Malaysia. The parent company is portrayed in the history of Geely.
Parkers notes that the EX30 is the smallest SUV Volvo has made, 206 mm shorter than the XC40. Volvo also set environmental targets for it: a lifetime carbon footprint of 30 tonnes over 200,000 km, covering production and use, which the company called the lowest of any of its cars. About a quarter of the aluminium, 17 per cent of the steel and 17 per cent of the plastics are recycled material.

Versions, batteries and range

The single-motor cars drive the rear wheels; the Twin Motor adds a front motor for all-wheel drive. All versions are limited to 180 km/h. The basic car uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, the Extended Range nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells. The difference is 136 km of WLTP range for €5,200 at the June 2023 German prices. Ratios like these are easier to judge with the power-to-weight calculator.
The Cross Country, released in 2025, has protective body cladding and more ground clearance. It gives up 24 km of WLTP range against the regular Twin Motor and is 0.1 seconds slower to 100 km/h.

Interior and practicality
The EX30 has no instrument display in front of the driver: speed and navigation appear on the central touchscreen. Parkers criticises the over-reliance on that screen, with functions such as the fog lights and mirror adjustment buried in menus, and names cramped rear seats and boot among its weak points. On the positive side it praises the value, the performance for the money and the premium look and feel.
Trim levels in Europe are Core, Plus and Ultra; an Essential budget version drops features such as the front storage compartment and adaptive cruise control. The Plus brings LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, two-zone climate control and heated front seats, and the Ultra adds a 360-degree camera, park pilot assist and a panoramic roof.

Safety
Parkers describes the EX30's Euro NCAP rating as five stars. Euro NCAP tested the Plus Single Motor Extended Range in 2024. It gave 88 per cent for adults and 85 per cent for children inside the car, 79 per cent for people outside it, and 80 per cent for the driver assistance systems. ANCAP adopted the same results for Australia.
In 2026 Volvo issued a recall for a high-voltage battery problem that could lead to a fire. Owners of certain versions, including the long-range model, were told not to charge above 70 per cent until the repair was done. Anyone buying a used EX30 should check that the recall work has been completed.
