Opel Astra K (2015-2021): Used Buying Guide and Known Problems
By Sarah Whitmore Updated 10 min read

Verdict
Buy a 2017-2019 Astra K with the 1.4 Turbo petrol at 92 kW (125 PS) or 110 kW (150 PS), or the 1.6 CDTI 100 kW (136 PS) diesel for long trips. Avoid 2015 cars, which have the worst ADAC breakdown index, and any turbo petrol without oil-change records. Expect about €6,400 (AutoScout24 median, November 2026).

The Astra K is one of the cheapest ways into a modern, well-equipped European family hatchback: about €6,400 is the median asking price in November 2026. The safe buys are 2017-2019 cars with the 1.4 Turbo petrol or the 1.6 CDTI diesel, a full service record and proof that the recall work was done. The 2015 cars and engines with patchy oil changes are where the trouble sits.
Which Astra K years and bodies exist
Opel unveiled the fifth-generation Astra on 1 June 2015 and showed it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015. In the UK the same car was sold as the Vauxhall Astra. It was built in Gliwice in Poland and Ellesmere Port in England, and it weighed up to 200 kg less than the Astra J it replaced, with the bodyshell alone dropping from 357 kg to 280 kg. The five-door hatchback came first; ADAC lists the Sports Tourer estate from March 2016. The Astra K generation page has the full specification history.
The facelift arrived in summer 2019, with first deliveries in November 2019. It looks almost identical from the outside. The real change is under the bonnet: a new family of three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines replaced most of the launch range. Production ended in Gliwice on 30 November 2021 and in Ellesmere Port on 13 December 2021, and the Astra L took over from January 2022. The wider family tree is on the Opel Astra hub.
Engines to choose and engines to avoid
| Engine | kW (PS) | Years | Gearbox | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 Turbo (3-cyl petrol) | 66 (90), 77 (105) | Pre-facelift | Manual | Fine in town; check oil records (LSPI) |
| 1.4 Turbo (4-cyl petrol) | 92 (125), 110 (150) | Pre-facelift | 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic | Best all-rounder before the facelift |
| 1.6 Turbo (4-cyl petrol) | 147 (200) | Pre-facelift | Manual | Rare and expensive |
| 1.4 CNG | 81 (110) | Pre-facelift | Manual | Cheap fuel, few filling stations |
| 1.6 CDTI | 70 (95), 81 (110), 100 (136) | Pre-facelift | Manual | ADAC's diesel pick; 136 PS for motorways |
| 1.6 BiTurbo CDTI | 118 (160) | Pre-facelift | Manual | Strong, but two turbos to maintain |
| 1.2 Turbo (3-cyl petrol) | 81 (110), 96 (130), 107 (145) | 2019-2021 | 6-speed manual | Belt in oil; insist on correct oil |
| 1.4 Turbo (3-cyl petrol) | 107 (145) | 2019-2021 | CVT only | The easy automatic after 2019 |
| 1.5 Diesel (3-cyl) | 77 (105), 90 (122) | 2019-2021 | 6-speed manual or 9-speed auto | Frugal, still young in the data |
ADAC recommends the 1.4 Turbo at 92 kW (125 PS) or 110 kW (150 PS) for its smooth pull, and says both are common on the used market. In ADAC's December 2017 test, the 110 kW (150 PS) version delivered quick performance and agile handling. Among diesels, ADAC points buyers to the 1.6 CDTI, and especially the 100 kW (136 PS) version for long motorway runs.
The early 1.0 Turbo and 1.4 Turbo (engine codes starting B10 and B14) are prone to low-speed pre-ignition, according to a German specialist buying guide. Engines built from about the end of 2018 (codes D10 and D14) received revised oil scraper rings that reduce the risk. A car that has run on the correct oil at proper intervals is the one to buy.
The facelift's 1.2 Turbo three-cylinder uses a timing belt that runs in engine oil. The same buying guide rates the manual version as one to avoid because of reported crankshaft end-float, while the automatic-only 1.4 three-cylinder gets a more cautious "check carefully". These reports come from a single source, so treat them as a reason to demand service records, not as proof every engine fails.
Manual, automatic or CVT
Most Astra Ks have a six-speed manual. Before the facelift, ADAC lists a conventional six-speed automatic as an option on the 1.4 Turbo. From late 2019, Opel offered a CVT with seven simulated ratios as standard on the 107 kW (145 PS) 1.4 Turbo, and a nine-speed automatic on the 90 kW (122 PS) 1.5 diesel.
On a manual 1.4 Turbo, listen for a loud creak from the clutch pedal. Haynes traces it to a vibrating clutch slave cylinder pipe, which is replaced and sleeved. On a manual 1.6 CDTI built between 2016 and 2018, check the brake recall described below.
What the breakdown and inspection data say
ADAC's 2025 breakdown statistics rate the Astra K as average to good. The index, which counts breakdowns per 1,000 cars per year, falls from 22.2 for 2015 cars to 11.6 for 2017, 11.8 for 2018, 10.1 for 2019 and 9.9 for 2021. The 2015 cars mainly suffer flat starter batteries. For 2020 and 2021 cars, the weak spots are boost pressure control and the turbocharger itself.
The TÜV Report is less kind. ADAC summarises it as slightly below average, with oil-soaked drivetrain parts and worn steering joints as the main reasons for a failed inspection. A firmenauto summary of the TÜV data published in August 2026 adds brake disc wear, above average on the newest cars, and front lighting faults.
UK owners give a mixed picture. In What Car?'s reliability survey, the petrol Astra ranked 23rd of 29 family cars with a score of 83.5%, and Vauxhall as a brand came 30th of 32. Owners mostly report infotainment and engine warning light glitches.
Running costs
ADAC measured 5.9 l/100 km in its EcoTest of the 1.4 Turbo 110 kW (150 PS) manual, against Opel's figure of 5.1 l/100 km. Auto Express quoted WLTP economy of about 5.5 l/100 km (51.4 mpg) for the facelift 1.2 Turbo manual and about 4.7 l/100 km (60.1 mpg) for the 1.5 diesel manual. The 1.4 CNG version suits high-mileage drivers because natural gas is cheap, as long as there is a filling station nearby.
Timing drives differ by engine. The 1.6 CDTI and the 1.5 diesel use a chain, and a stretched chain that rattles on a cold start needs attention before it damages the engine. The 1.2 Turbo uses its oil-wetted belt. Older 1.6 CDTIs share the usual diesel wear items: particulate filter, dual-mass flywheel, turbocharger, EGR valve and injectors. A car used only for short trips is a poor diesel buy.
Opel's official boot figure for the hatchback is 370 litres, rising to 1,210 litres with the seats folded. The Sports Tourer is the better family choice if you need more.
Prices in November 2026
The cheapest Astra K cost €17,260 at launch in 2015, according to the ADAC list price in Germany. AutoScout24 asking prices across eight EU markets in November 2026 put the median at about €6,400, with the middle 80% of cars between about €4,000 and €9,000. With about 5,400 cars listed, buyers have plenty of choice and room to walk away.
The spread follows year, mileage and engine. High-mileage 2015-2016 diesels fill the bottom of the range. Facelift cars from 2020 and 2021 with automatic gearboxes sit at the top. Real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition, so compare like with like.
Astra K against Golf, Focus and Octavia
The Astra K is usually cheaper than a used Volkswagen Golf of the same age and offers similar space. The used Ford Focus guide covers a car that drives better but has its own gearbox issues. For the most boot space in the class, a used Skoda Octavia is the obvious alternative. The list of the best family hatchbacks puts the four side by side.
How to find a good one
Start with the paperwork. Ask for a service record with oil changes on time, because both the early turbo petrols and the 1.2 Turbo depend on it. Then ask an Opel or Vauxhall dealer to run the VIN for open recalls: the airbag modules from 2016, the turbo oil line, the seat frame welds and the brake recall on manual diesels. On the test drive, start the engine from cold, listen for chain rattle on diesels, check the headlight warning on LED cars, and drive over speed bumps to hear any front suspension creak.

Questions and answers
Is the Opel Astra K reliable?
It is average to good in ADAC's 2025 breakdown statistics, with 2017-2019 cars scoring around 10-12 breakdowns per 1,000 cars against 22.2 for 2015 cars. The TUV Report is slightly below average because of oil leaks and steering joints.
Which Astra K engine is the best?
The 1.4 Turbo petrol at 92 kW (125 PS) or 110 kW (150 PS) is the best all-rounder and ADAC's petrol recommendation. For high mileage, ADAC suggests the 1.6 CDTI, ideally at 100 kW (136 PS).
Does the Astra K have a timing belt or chain?
It depends on the engine. The 1.6 CDTI and 1.5 diesels use a timing chain, while the 2019-on 1.2 Turbo petrol uses a toothed belt that runs in engine oil, so correct oil and service intervals matter.
What changed with the 2019 Astra K facelift?
Opel replaced most engines with new three-cylinder units: a 1.2 Turbo petrol at 81-107 kW (110-145 PS), a 1.4 Turbo with CVT and a 1.5 diesel at 77 or 90 kW (105 or 122 PS) with an optional nine-speed automatic.
How much is a used Astra K in 2026?
AutoScout24 asking prices in November 2026 show a median of about €6,400, with most cars between about €4,000 and €9,000. Early high-mileage diesels are cheapest; 2020-2021 facelift automatics cost the most.
