Golf Mk7

Verdict

Buy a 2017-2019 facelift Golf 7 with the 1.5 TSI Evo 110 kW (150 PS) or the 2.0 TDI 110 kW (150 PS), ideally with a manual or the wet-clutch DSG. Be careful with town-driven DQ200 DSG cars and 2013-2015 TSI petrols without recall paperwork. Expect to pay about €7,900, the median asking price in November 2026.

Used: AutoScout24 asking prices in eight EU countries, November 2026, whole generation (10th-90th percentile). New: ADAC list price in Germany for the cheapest version at launch. A real price depends on year, mileage, engine and condition.

The Golf 7 is the easiest compact car in Europe to find used: AutoScout24 listed almost 24,000 of them in November 2026, at a median asking price of about €7,900 in November 2026. Its faults are well documented and many were fixed by recall, so the real work is choosing the right engine and gearbox and proving the history.

Golf 7 years, body styles and the 2017 facelift

Volkswagen's own engine list for the Golf 7 starts with 2013 production, and the hatchback ran until the Golf 8 arrived, while the Variant estate carried on into 2020. ADAC lists five body styles: three-door and five-door hatchback, Variant estate, the raised Alltrack and the taller Golf Sportsvan, which has its own buying logic and is not covered here.

The facelift, often called the Golf 7.5, is the one date that matters. Volkswagen lists a new set of engines for the 2017 model: a 1.0 TSI with 85 kW (115 PS), the 1.5 TSI Evo with 96 kW (130 PS) or 110 kW (150 PS), a 1.6 TDI with 85 kW (115 PS), a 100 kW (136 PS) e-Golf and a 228 kW (310 PS) Golf R. Auto Express reports that the 1.5 TSI Evo replaced the 1.4 TSI in March 2017, and the Golf was the first car to get it. ADAC confirms that the facelift dropped the 1.4 TSI.

Every Golf 7 diesel is from the EA288 family. Carbuyer and ADAC both state that it was not part of the EA189 emissions recall that covered the Golf 6, which makes a Golf 7 TDI a simpler purchase than its predecessor. Euro NCAP awarded five stars; ADAC notes that pole impact and pedestrian protection were the weaker areas.

Engines to choose and engines to avoid

1.5 TSI Evo ACT 96 (130) / 110 (150) 2017-2019 Manual or DQ200 DSG Best petrol once the 2020 software fix is loaded
1.6 TDI 66-85 (90-115) 2013-2019 Manual or DQ200 DSG Only for regular long runs
2.0 TDI 110 (150) 2013-2019 Manual or wet DQ250 DSG Best long-distance buy
GTD 135 (184) 2014-2019 Manual or wet DSG Check for coolant loss

Outputs and years are from Volkswagen's engine list; gearbox pairings follow Gebrauchtwagenberater.

For most buyers the choice is between the 1.5 TSI Evo 110 kW (150 PS) and the 2.0 TDI 110 kW (150 PS). ADAC recommends the 2.0 TDI as the best balance of fuel use and pace, and calls the 1.6 TDI adequate away from motorways. The 4MOTION four-wheel-drive version is the one ADAC suggests for towing or mountain roads.

The 1.5 TSI Evo has one documented weakness. Auto Express reported in July 2019 that cars with this engine could judder and "kangaroo" in low gears when cold, sometimes stalling at junctions. Honest John reported in March 2020 that Volkswagen had released a software update as the fix for all affected group models. A test drive from cold shows whether a car still has it.

On the earlier EA211 petrols, the EU Safety Gate alert A12/1253/19 covers Golfs built from December 2013 to March 2015: the cam belt pulley could break and the camshaft adjuster bolts could loosen. Volkswagen's code for the campaign is 15H2. The later 1.0 TSI three-cylinder has its own KBA recall for injectors that do not seal fully, covering 2018 to 2020 model years.

The GTI is a separate case. What Car? owners report high oil consumption, and low oil can damage the engine and its timing chain, so the dipstick matters more than the service stamps.

DSG, manual or automatic

Two very different dual-clutch gearboxes sit behind the same DSG badge. The 7-speed DQ200 with dry clutches is paired with the small petrols and the 1.6 TDI. Gebrauchtwagenberater describes it as sensitive to dense city traffic and towing, and notes a service action that replaced the original synthetic gear oil with mineral oil because the synthetic fluid could cause electronic faults. What Car? owners report jerky changes and complete failures, with expensive repairs. The guide to automatic gearbox types explains why dry-clutch units dislike crawling traffic.

The wet-clutch DQ250 and the later DQ381 are tougher but need oil changes: every 60,000 km for the DQ250 and every 120,000 km for the DQ381, according to Gebrauchtwagenberater. Ask for the invoices.

The manual is the safest choice on any petrol below the GTI. Haynes describes one manual fault: reverse gear refusing to engage, usually cured by adjusting the selector mechanism or fitting VW repair kit 02T 398 261.

Running costs and where the money goes

Most Golf 7 engines are economical; the real costs come from neglect. What Car? stresses that a full service history matters on this model, and its list of owner complaints includes air conditioning faults, intermittent electric parking brake faults and adaptive cruise control that can brake hard without reason. Recalibrating the radar is chargeable.

The EA211 petrols and the TDI diesels use a toothed timing belt; the GTI and R use a chain. What Car? advises a belt change every five years on the sister Octavia, which shares these engines, and suggests replacing the water pump at the same visit. Budget for it if the paperwork does not show one.

Diesels suit drivers who cover long distances. Gebrauchtwagenberater lists the usual high-mileage and short-trip failures for the TDI: diesel particulate filter, dual-mass flywheel, turbocharger, EGR valve and injectors. A 1.6 TDI used for school runs will clog its filter.

Cars that sit for long periods have their own problem: Haynes describes rough, sluggish running and warning lights caused by a sticking turbo wastegate actuator, with fault codes such as P2562 and P0034.

Prices today and what you get for the money

ADAC's German list price for the cheapest Golf 7 was €17,175 at launch in 2012. AutoScout24 listings across eight European markets in November 2026 show 23,984 cars, with most between €5,000 and €10,000 in November 2026 and a median of about €7,900 in November 2026.

These are asking prices for the whole generation, so real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition. The lower end is mostly 2013-2015 cars with the 1.2 TSI or 1.6 TDI and high mileage. Facelift cars with the 1.5 TSI Evo or 2.0 TDI and the DSG sit near the top of the range, while GTI and R models are often priced above it. For comparison, the Golf 8 had a median asking price of about €15,500 in November 2026, roughly double, and the Golf 6 about €5,500 in November 2026.

The best value is a 2017-2019 car with the 1.5 TSI Evo or 2.0 TDI and full history. Paying more for a very low-mileage early car rarely makes sense, because age-related items such as springs, dampers and door seals catch up regardless of mileage.

Golf 7 against its rivals

What Car?'s reliability survey gives the petrol Golf 7 a score of 90.7%, placing it 22nd of 29 family cars. The same survey places the Mk7 ahead of the Ford Focus, the 2020-on SEAT Leon and the Golf 8, but behind the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Owner satisfaction fell over time: Carbuyer reports 18th place in the 2014 Driver Power survey and 73rd in 2021.

The closest alternative is the used Skoda Octavia, which uses the same engines and gearboxes in a larger body and usually costs a little more for the same year. The Ford Focus Mk3 is cheaper and more fun to drive, but has its own gearbox and EcoBoost issues. The Golf hub page covers every generation if you are weighing a Golf 6 or Golf 8 instead.

How to find a good one

Start with the VIN. A Volkswagen dealer can confirm open recalls, and the Golf 7 has many: ADAC lists wheel bearing housings, rear door child locks, the onboard electrical control unit, Autoliv airbags and belt tensioners, rear wheel carriers, thin brake discs on some petrol versions and headrest guides. Carbuyer adds fuel leaks to the list.

Next, inspect the cabin for water. Haynes traces wet passenger footwells to a cracked door speaker mounting bracket, and Gebrauchtwagenberater says rear door speaker seals are the most common entry point, with panoramic roofs a rarer cause. Lift the carpet edges and smell the cabin.

Check the headlamps. Gebrauchtwagenberater reports that xenon lenses on cars built from June 2012 to May 2016 can turn milky, covered by VW technical bulletins 2050982/1 and 2051055/2, with goodwill usually limited to cars with complete service books.

Finally, look at what the TÜV finds. ADAC's summary of TÜV data shows an above-average share of Golfs passing without defects, but springs, dampers and worn brake parts appear more often than average. The general used car inspection checklist covers the basic steps; the checklist on this page lists the Golf-specific ones.

Common problems

  • DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG judder and failure (TSI petrols, 1.6 TDI) all yearsSeverity: High

Jerky take-off, shudder when creeping in traffic, harsh or delayed shifts, and in bad cases a gearbox warning and limp mode.

Fix: The garage updates software and adapts the clutches; worn clutch packs or a failed mechatronic unit are replaced.

Questions and answers

Is the Golf 7 1.5 TSI Evo reliable?

Yes, once the software update is loaded. From 2017 some cars juddered and stalled when cold, mainly with the manual gearbox. Volkswagen released a software fix in early 2020, so ask the dealer to confirm it and drive the car from a cold start before buying.

Which Golf 7 diesel is the best buy?

The 2.0 TDI with 110 kW (150 PS) is the best all-rounder and ADAC's recommendation. It is part of the EA288 family, which was not included in the EA189 emissions recall, and it pairs with the wet-clutch DQ250 DSG. Choose a diesel only if you drive long distances.

Is the DSG gearbox in the Golf 7 a problem?

It depends on which DSG. The dry-clutch 7-speed DQ200 used with the small petrols and the 1.6 TDI is the one with a record of judder and failures, especially in town use. The wet-clutch DQ250 and DQ381 are tougher but need oil changes at 60,000 or 120,000 km.

Does the Golf 7 have a timing belt or chain?

Most have a belt. The EA211 petrols (1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI) and the TDI diesels use a toothed belt, which What Car? advises changing every five years on the related Octavia. The GTI and R use a chain, which depends on correct oil level.

How much should I pay for a used Golf 7?

Most Golf 7 cars were advertised between €5,000 and €10,000 in November 2026, with a median of about €7,900. Early 1.2 TSI and 1.6 TDI cars sit at the bottom, while 2017-2019 facelift cars with the 1.5 TSI or 2.0 TDI and full history cost more.
