Used Ford Focus Mk3 buying guide: PowerShift, EcoBoost, recalls, prices
By Oleksandr Hnatiuk Updated 10 min read

Verdict
Buy a manual Focus Mk3 with the 1.6 Ti-VCT petrol or a 1.5 or 2.0 TDCi diesel, with every recall documented. Avoid the PowerShift automatic and any 1.0 or 1.6 EcoBoost without proof of the cooling fixes. It is cheap for its class, at about €5,500 median asking price in November 2026, but needs careful checks.

The Focus Mk3 is the cheapest of the big European family hatchbacks to buy used, with a median asking price of about €5,500 in November 2026. It still steers better than most rivals, but it has more documented engine and gearbox faults than a Golf. The safe route is a manual with a simple engine and complete recall records.
Focus Mk3 years, bodies and the facelift
Ford launched the third-generation Focus in Europe and North America on 2 March 2011, with European production at Saarlouis in Germany from December 2010. The facelift, often called the Mk3.5, was shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Parkers lists its changes: a new bonnet, front wings and bumpers with a slimmer grille and headlamps, LED tail lamps and a new tailgate. ADAC adds that the facelift made the controls easier to use. The Focus Mk4 replaced it in 2018.
The Focus was built as a five-door hatchback and an estate, with a saloon in some markets. The performance ST and the four-wheel-drive RS are separate buys with their own wear items and are not the subject of this guide.
The facelift date matters less than the engine and the recall history. Many of the worst faults below were fixed under recall, so a 2012 car with every campaign done can be a better buy than a 2016 car with none.
Engines to choose and engines to avoid
| Engine | kW (PS) | Years | Gearbox | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 2.0 TDCi | 85-120 (115-163) | 2011-2018 | Manual or PowerShift | Strong; check the 2014-2015 recall |
Outputs follow Gebrauchtwagenberater and Wikipedia; kW are converted from the PS figures they give.
Gebrauchtwagenberater rates the naturally aspirated 1.6 Ti-VCT as free of notable faults in the Mk3 because it has no turbo and no direct injection. ADAC calls the non-turbo engines weak for the car's size, so it suits drivers who value low risk over pace.
The 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder won awards and drives well, but it needs the most checks. What Car? reports that cars built from 2012 to early 2013 could leak coolant and suffer engine failure, and that Ford fitted a new "Degas" hose at a scheduled service. If the hose is not fitted and the engine fails, What Car? warns of a four-figure bill. Gebrauchtwagenberater adds that its timing belt runs in oil and lasts about 240,000 km, but wrong or old oil can break it down and destroy the engine. Auto Bild's 2026 TÜV summary lists defective catalytic converters on this engine, and Gebrauchtwagenberater reports failures from 70,000-80,000 km with fault code P0420.
The 1.6 EcoBoost has a recall for overheating: ADAC describes cylinder heads that could crack when coolant runs low, with a risk of oil reaching hot parts and fire. The fix adds a coolant level sensor and warning software. Its replacement, the 1.5 EcoBoost, is not trouble-free either; Gebrauchtwagenberater reports hairline cracks in the block on older examples, shown by a rough cold start and coolant loss.
Among diesels, completecar.ie notes the diesels are a bit more dependable than the petrols. Gebrauchtwagenberater singles out the 1.6 TDCi for frequent particulate filter problems. The 2.0 TDCi built from July 2014 to 2015 was recalled because its engine control software might not detect overheating, which in severe cases could breach the sump.
PowerShift, manual or automatic
The PowerShift dual-clutch gearbox is the Focus Mk3's best-known weakness. completecar.ie describes juddering, clonking and poor shifting, and Parkers calls PowerShift troublesome and best avoided. Honest John answered an owner in January 2019 whose 2015 1.6 petrol Focus needed a new clutch pack at 17,000 miles, about 27,000 km. Its advice: the clutches last longer if you do not sit on the brake in Drive with the engine running.
Sources describe the later fixes differently. completecar.ie says Ford fitted a wet-clutch unit or a torque-converter automatic from about 2015, which resolved the problems, while Gebrauchtwagenberater names the wet-clutch 6DCT450 and still reports oil leaks, rough shifts and plastic spacers in the clutch basket that can break. Parkers and What Car? both stress fluid and filter changes, at three years or every third service.
The manual is not free of issues. Parkers reports clutch component failures on early 1.0 EcoBoost cars below 10,000 miles, about 16,000 km, and completecar.ie says premature clutch and dual-mass flywheel failure is rare, though costly when it happens. Two recalls cover the clutch pressure plate on EcoBoost manuals: one for Focus models built from 2011 to 2013, issued in late 2019, and one for 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost cars with the six-speed manual built from 2 June 2015 to 17 August 2018. A fractured plate causes a burning smell and loss of drive, and ADAC notes a fire risk in extreme cases.
Running costs
The ADAC breakdown hotspots for the Focus Mk3 are the starter motor, alternator, coolant and heater hoses and the starter battery. completecar.ie and Carbuyer both point to stop-start faults as an early sign of a weak battery, and to coolant use usually traced to a leaking thermostat housing, which is a fairly easy fix.
Belt intervals vary by source. Gebrauchtwagenberater gives about 240,000 km for the 1.0 EcoBoost and 200,000 km or five years for the 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost, while Carbuyer says most engines need a belt every eight years. Use Ford's schedule for the exact engine and treat any car without a belt record as due. The guide to timing belts and chains explains what an overdue belt can cost.
What Car? recommends idling a 1.0 EcoBoost for 15 to 20 seconds after a long run so the turbo can cool before switching off.
Prices today and what you get for the money
ADAC's German list price for the cheapest Focus Mk3 was €16,450 in 2011. AutoScout24 listings across eight European markets in November 2026 show 5,178 cars, with most between €2,500 and €8,450 in November 2026 and a median of about €5,500 in November 2026.
These asking prices cover the whole generation, so real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition. The cheapest cars are early 1.6 Ti-VCT and 1.6 TDCi models with high mileage; facelift cars with the 1.5 TDCi or 1.0 EcoBoost and late estates sit near the top, and the ST and RS are usually above the range. The Focus Mk4 had a median asking price of about €11,790 in November 2026, roughly twice as much.
Spend part of the saving on a pre-purchase inspection and a coolant, belt and clutch check. A Focus at the median price with full records is better value than a cheaper one with gaps.
Focus Mk3 against its rivals
The TÜV data is the Focus's weak point. In Auto Bild's 2026 TÜV figures, 64.7% of eight-to-nine-year-old Focus cars passed without defects against a 71.7% average, and 26.1% had significant defects against 18.3%. ADAC's TÜV summary names suspension mounts, rusty exhausts and faulty lighting. ADAC's breakdown statistics show early Mk3 years below average and later years better than average.
What Car?'s earlier survey placed the diesel Focus 11th and the petrol 17th of 31 family cars, and the same survey ranks the Golf 7 as more reliable. The Opel Astra K is the other main rival at similar prices. The Focus Mk3 model page has full specifications.
How to find a good one
Ask the seller for the registration and VIN and have a Ford dealer print the recall status. completecar.ie advises this before buying, and the Mk3 had many campaigns: the Degas hose, the 1.6 EcoBoost cooling sensor, two clutch pressure plate campaigns, the 2.0 TDCi software and airbag igniters. Carbuyer says the car was recalled "quite a lot".
Then inspect the bodywork and cabin. Parkers warns of poorly repaired panels, overspray around lamps and the filler flap, and creaking from badly bonded replacement windscreens. completecar.ie reports water getting into the front door handles and upsetting keyless entry, and Gebrauchtwagenberater mentions squeaking doors and loose door seals. Keep the paperwork you receive; the guide to used car documents lists what to collect.

Questions and answers
Should I avoid the Ford Focus PowerShift?
Yes, in most cases. The dual-clutch PowerShift is known for judder, clonks and early clutch wear, and Parkers calls it best avoided. If you need an automatic, choose a later car with documented fluid changes and no judder on the test drive, or look at a different model.
Is the 1.0 EcoBoost in the Focus Mk3 reliable?
It can be, with the right history. Cars built in 2012 and early 2013 need the modified Degas coolant hose, the belt runs in oil and needs the correct oil grade, and catalytic converters fail on some cars. Buy one only with recall proof and regular oil changes.
Which Focus Mk3 engine is the safest buy?
The naturally aspirated 1.6 Ti-VCT petrol with a manual gearbox, which has no turbo or direct injection and no notable pattern faults. For high mileage, the 1.5 or 2.0 TDCi diesels with a manual are a good choice once the recalls are confirmed.
When was the Focus Mk3 facelifted?
The facelift was shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. It brought a new bonnet, bumpers, slimmer headlamps, LED tail lamps and easier controls, and later the 1.5 EcoBoost petrol and 1.5 TDCi diesel engines.
How much is a used Ford Focus Mk3 worth?
AutoScout24 asking prices in November 2026 put the median at about €5,500, with most cars between €2,500 and €8,450. Early high-mileage 1.6 petrols and diesels are cheapest, and late facelift cars and estates cost most.
