Buying a Used BMW 3 Series F30: Engines, Faults and Prices
By Felix Hartmann Updated 10 min read

Verdict
Buy a 2015-2019 facelift with the B47 320d, B48 320i or 330i, or the B58 340i. Avoid early N47 diesels and N20 petrols unless an invoice proves the timing chain was renewed. Most cars on sale in November 2026 cost EUR 5,300-11,500, with a median near EUR 7,900.

The F30 3 Series is the rear-wheel-drive executive saloon and Touring estate to pick if driving matters to you, but the engine code decides whether it is a good buy. Cars built after the July 2015 facelift use BMW's modular B38, B48, B58 and B47 engines and leave behind the timing-chain trouble of the early N47 diesels and N20 petrols.
Which F30 years and versions exist
Production started in 2011 and the saloon reached German showrooms in early 2012: ADAC's catalogue lists the 328i and 335i from February 2012 and the 320i from March 2012. The Touring estate followed later in 2012. The Gran Turismo is a separate, longer model and is not covered here. The facelift (BMW calls it the LCI) was shown in May 2015 and built from July 2015, with new headlights and LED rear lights and, more importantly, a new family of three-, four- and six-cylinder engines. ADAC lists facelifted saloons until October 2018; the G20 replaced the range in 2019. Euro NCAP gave the F30 five stars in 2012.
Trim lines are Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport, plus the Advantage and Modern Line packs of early cars. Trim matters less than the engine, the gearbox and whether the car has xDrive.
Engines to choose and engines to avoid
The F30 has a timing chain on every engine. On the early N47 diesels and N20 petrols those chains, their guides and tensioners are the main reason the model has a mixed reputation.

Outputs are ADAC catalogue figures; the verdicts follow Gebrauchtwagenberater.de, which rates the N13, N20 and N47 "avoid" and the B38, B48, B58 and B47 "buy". The N47 stayed in the 316d until March 2015 and in the 318d and 325d until June 2015. Its chain sits at the gearbox end of the engine, so a repair means a lot of labour: auto motor und sport quotes about EUR 1,500-2,500 for the job (figures read in November 2026). The warning sign is a metallic rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. What Car? reports that the post-2015 diesels suffer far less from tensioner noise.
The N20 shows chain symptoms from roughly 80,000-120,000 km according to the German workshop Dietrich, with rattling on cold starts and fault codes P0016 or P0017. Its electric water pump can also fail. The B48 that replaced it is rated a buy, but cars up to about 2017 can lose coolant through a leaking radiator hose. The B47 diesel has occasional turbocharger failures and, used for short trips, AdBlue sensor and particulate filter faults. The six-cylinder N57 in the 330d is strong, but older engines have suffered con-rod bearing damage and it is part of the EGR cooler fire-risk recall.
Gearboxes, xDrive and the 330e
Most used F30s have the ZF eight-speed automatic, which Gebrauchtwagenberater.de rates as reliable. BMW calls its oil a lifetime fill, but the oil-change intervals recommended by specialists range from 60,000 to 150,000 km, so a car past that mileage should have had at least one change. Jerky shifts sometimes need only new fluid and filters, says Parkers. Manual cars can suffer from a worn dual-mass flywheel, felt as vibration through the clutch pedal or judder when pulling away.
xDrive four-wheel drive suits drivers in snow or those who tow, but the transfer case can leak or judder. Mixed tyre sizes and uneven tyre pressures speed up its wear, so check that all four tyres match.
The 330e plug-in hybrid was built from March 2016 to June 2018. It pairs a 135 kW (184 PS) petrol engine with a 65 kW (88 PS) electric motor and a 5.7 kWh gross battery, for 40 km of electric range on the NEDC cycle. The tank shrinks to 41 litres and the boot to 370 litres, according to ADAC.
Running costs
ADAC lists the facelifted 320d at 4.0 l/100 km on the NEDC cycle; ADAC's own EcoTest of an automatic 320d in February 2012 measured 5.2 l/100 km, which is closer to real driving. The 330d is rated at 5.3 l/100 km NEDC. In Germany the 320d sits in insurance classes 22/23/24 (third party, comprehensive, partial cover), and UK insurance groups run from 18 to 50 across the range (Parkers). ADAC's 2012 test already criticised high workshop and tyre costs. Parkers warns that discs and pads wear quickly and that a whining differential points to skipped oil changes.
Because every engine uses a chain, there is no belt to budget for. What you are paying for instead is a regular oil change: Parkers notes that F30 chains fail when oil services are missed.
What ADAC and TUV data show
ADAC's breakdown statistics treat the 3 Series kindly. In the 2025 edition, cars first registered in 2015 recorded 9.1 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles, falling to 6.4 for 2016 and 5.4 for 2018, all in the best rating band; the only fault cluster named was engine cooling on 2018 cars. The 2019 edition showed 8.5 for 2012 cars and 5.0 for 2014 cars.
The TUV Report 2026 is less flattering for older cars. At 8-9 years, 21.5 percent of 3 Series and 4 Series cars had significant defects against an average of 18.3 percent, while at 10-11 years the figure was 23.0 against 22.9 percent. Inspectors note that F30 mileages run 25-30 percent above the average, and they find more parking brake faults from the sixth year and more front lighting faults. In What Car?'s owner survey the diesels scored 96.5 percent, fourth of 24 executive cars, and the petrols 92 percent.
Prices today and the rivals
ADAC's cheapest German list price was EUR 31,850 at launch in 2012. AutoScout24 asking prices across eight European markets in November 2026 put the F30 at a median of about EUR 7,900, with most cars between EUR 5,300 and EUR 11,500 among 8,040 offers. For comparison, the older E90 has a median of about EUR 5,950 and the G20 successor about EUR 18,700 in November 2026. These are figures for the whole generation, so real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition: the cheap end is mostly early high-mileage diesels, the top end facelifted cars with the B-series engines.
That makes the F30 the cheapest of the three German rivals. A used Mercedes C-Class W205 rides more softly but costs more, and a used Audi A4 B9 has the best breakdown record and the highest prices. For specifications of every version, see the BMW 3 Series model page, and if you mainly need load space, compare the Touring with the best used diesel estates.
How to find a good one
Start with the engine code in the registration papers or the online VIN decoder, then decide whether an early N47 or N20 car is acceptable at all. If it is, ask for an invoice showing the chain, guides and tensioner were renewed. Many F30s were company cars with high motorway mileage, and What Car? and Parkers both warn about clocked odometers, so compare service stamps, MOT or TUV records and the BMW service history. Check every recall by VIN with BMW, ADAC or the KBA, especially the brake vacuum pump (built June 2012 to August 2013), the fuel pump (June 2012 to April 2014) and the EGR cooler.
Book the viewing for a cold engine and listen from the front of the car for the first ten seconds. The used car inspection checklist covers the general checks; the F30-specific ones are in the list on this page.
Common problems
-
Timing chain wear on N47 diesels (316d, 318d, 320d, 325d) 2012–2015Severity: Critical
A metallic rattle for a few seconds after a cold start, later constant noise, loss of power and the engine warning light.
Fix: The engine is dismantled at the gearbox end and the chain, guides and tensioners are renewed. Typical cost: €1,500–2,500

Questions and answers
Is the BMW F30 320d reliable?
The facelifted 320d with the B47 engine (July 2015 on) is a good buy and scored well in What Car?'s owner survey. The 2012-2015 car with the N47 engine is riskier because its timing chain can stretch; buy one only with proof the chain was replaced.
Which F30 engines have timing chain problems?
The N47 diesels (316d, 318d, 320d, 325d up to mid-2015) and the N20 petrols (320i, 328i up to 2015) are the ones to worry about. The later B47 and B48 engines and the six-cylinders are not known for chain failures.
How much does a used F30 3 Series cost?
AutoScout24 asking prices in November 2026 show a median of about EUR 7,900, with most cars between EUR 5,300 and EUR 11,500. Early high-mileage diesels sit at the bottom, facelifted cars with the newer engines at the top.
Is the 330e a sensible used buy?
It can be, if you charge at home. The 330e has a 5.7 kWh gross battery for 40 km of NEDC electric range, but its tank is only 41 litres and its boot 370 litres, so it suits short commutes better than long trips.
Should I buy an F30 with xDrive?
Only if you need the traction for snow or towing. xDrive adds a transfer case that can leak or judder, and it is sensitive to mismatched tyres. A rear-wheel-drive car is simpler and cheaper to keep.
