Used Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205: What to Check Before You Buy

C-Class W205

Verdict

Buy a 2018-2021 facelift, ideally a four-cylinder petrol or a C 220 d with full service records and proof of every recall. Be wary of 2014-2015 cars, early diesels with open recalls and cars with tired Airmatic. Most cost EUR 8,500-21,500 in November 2026, with a median near EUR 12,500.

Used: AutoScout24 asking prices in eight EU countries, November 2026, whole generation (10th-90th percentile). New: ADAC list price in Germany for the cheapest version at launch. A real price depends on year, mileage, engine and condition.

The W205 C-Class is the comfortable choice among used German executive cars: quiet, well equipped and available as saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet. Its weak points are the diesel emissions hardware, the front suspension, rust on the rear subframe and optional air suspension. A facelifted petrol or a well-documented C 220 d is the safest way in.

Which W205 years and versions exist

ADAC's catalogue lists the first saloons from March 2014. In the UK the estate (S205) followed in June 2014, the coupé in October 2015 and the cabriolet in February 2016, according to Auto Express. The C 350 e plug-in hybrid went on sale in Germany on 2 February 2015, with deliveries from March 2015. The facelift arrived in May 2018 (UK) and German facelift models are listed from July 2018: it brought cosmetic changes inside and out, several replacement engines and new plug-in hybrids in place of the C 350 e. The W206 replaced the range in 2021. Euro NCAP awarded five stars in 2014.

Trim lines are the base model, Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG Line. ADAC's used-car report recommends a C 220 in Avantgarde trim and notes the C 220 is the most common version on the market.

Outputs come from ADAC's catalogue. The four-cylinder M274 petrols are the engines auto motor und sport calls the safest choice, with few major problems. Their known weak spot is the thermostat housing, which triggers fault code P0128; Gebrauchtwagenberater.de puts a repair at EUR 450-750 (guide prices read in November 2026). Cars built from March 2014 to February 2018 were also part of an alternator recall covering about 270,000 cars worldwide. Parkers adds that a petrol smell on a cold C 200 usually comes from a fuel line near the pump. The V6 M276 in the C 400 and C 43 can suffer a chain tensioner fault on cars built up to about the end of 2014, heard as loud rattling on a cold start.

The diesels need more homework. The OM651 in the C 220 d and C 250 d is reliable when maintained, but ADAC records a January 2015 recall for a faulty timing chain tensioner seal that could let the chain jump and wreck the engine. The 1.6-litre OM626 in early C 180 d and C 200 d cars was recalled in June 2016 because its high-pressure fuel line could detach. Both engines were also part of the June 2018 official software recall for unlawful defeat devices, which covered 238,000 vehicles in Germany across several models. The OM654 that arrived with the facelift runs more smoothly. Gebrauchtwagenberater.de lists no known faults for it, but auto motor und sport reports torn timing chains on this engine, so ask for any chain work and listen carefully on a cold start.

All diesels rely on AdBlue. NOx sensors and the AdBlue pump module are the costly parts, at EUR 600-1,200 according to Gebrauchtwagenberater.de (November 2026). ADAC lists an 8.5-litre AdBlue tank as standard and 25 litres as an option.

Gearboxes, Airmatic and the plug-in hybrids

Auto motor und sport puts the automatic share at about 92 percent, split between the 7G-TRONIC PLUS of early cars and the 9G-TRONIC, which ADAC's cost tables show on the C 220 d from 2016 and on almost all facelift cars. Neither has a reputation for failure. A 9G-TRONIC oil and filter change costs EUR 550-800 according to Gebrauchtwagenberater.de (2026 guide prices), so ask whether it has ever been done. The guide to automatic gearbox types explains how torque converters differ from dual-clutch units.

Airmatic air suspension cost about EUR 1,416 extra on the 2016 German price list and only about 6 percent of buyers ordered it. It gives the softest ride, but a leaking air spring or tired compressor shows up as a car sitting low after standing, warnings on the dash or a compressor that runs often. Gebrauchtwagenberater.de quotes EUR 800-1,600 per axle in 2026 for springs or compressor.

The C 350 e combines a petrol engine with an electric motor of up to 60 kW and a 6.2 kWh gross battery for 31 km of NEDC electric range. Its boot shrinks to 335 litres in the saloon. Parkers reports starter motor problems and real electric range well below the claim, which worsens with battery age. The later C 300 e, from August 2019, is the stronger plug-in choice.

Body, suspension and rust

Auto motor und sport names rust as the main body problem: check the side members, the jacking points and the rear subframe, which Mercedes replaced under goodwill only when damage was already advanced. At the front, ball joints and the rear bushes of the tension struts wear, giving vague steering, and Parkers warns of worn lower control arms that show up as uneven front tyre wear. TUV inspectors also focus on the axle suspension as the car ages.

Running costs

ADAC lists the 2015-2016 C 220 d at 4.3 l/100 km on the NEDC cycle. The standard fuel tank holds only 41 litres. Servicing alternates every 25,000 km or 12 months: ADAC put Service 1 at EUR 520-530 and Service 2 at EUR 690-720, including labour, in its 2025 report. Front discs and pads cost EUR 660-720 on the same 2025 basis. ADAC's monthly running cost for a 2018-2021 C 220 d 9G is EUR 487 without depreciation, or 39.0 cents per km, in its 2025 calculation. German insurance classes are 23/25/24 across the diesel range; UK insurance groups run from 23 to 49 (Parkers).

Reliability data and recalls

ADAC's breakdown statistics show a clear improvement with age of design. Cars first registered in 2014 recorded 18.0 breakdowns per 1,000, 2015 cars 11.4, 2017 cars 9.1, and 2019 cars only 4.1 in the 2025 edition. The TUV Report 2026 gives 10.0 percent significant defects for the 6-7-year-old C-Class against an average of 13.6 percent. Owners are less kind: in the 2021 Auto Express Driver Power survey the C-Class ranked 71st of 75 cars, and Auto Express counts 20 UK recalls, covering steering columns, airbags, seatbelts and the AdBlue filler pipe.

Prices today and the rivals

ADAC's cheapest German list price was EUR 33,861 at launch in 2014. AutoScout24 asking prices in November 2026 show a median of about EUR 12,500, with most cars between EUR 8,500 and EUR 21,500 among 11,251 offers. The older W204 has a median of about EUR 8,000 and the W206 about EUR 28,900 in November 2026. These are generation-wide figures: real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition, with early high-mileage diesels at the bottom and facelifted estates and plug-ins at the top.

The C-Class costs more than a used BMW 3 Series F30 but less than a used Audi A4 B9, and it is the most comfortable of the three. The C-Class model page lists every generation.

How to find a good one

Run a car history check for mileage and accident records, then check by VIN with Mercedes or the KBA that the chain tensioner, fuel line and diesel software recalls were carried out. Put the car on a lift: rust on the rear subframe and jacking points is easier to judge than any test drive.

Common problems

  • OM651 timing chain tensioner seal (C 220 d, C 250 d; recall) 2014–2015Severity: Critical

A leaking tensioner seal lets the chain lose tension; it can jump a tooth and destroy the engine.

Fix: Recall from January 2015: the tensioner seal is replaced free of charge.

Questions and answers

Is the Mercedes C-Class W205 reliable?

Reasonably, and it improved over time. ADAC recorded 18.0 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2014 cars but only 4.1 for 2019 cars, and TUV defect rates are below average. Owners in the 2021 Driver Power survey were less satisfied with build quality and reliability.

Which C-Class W205 engine is best?

The four-cylinder M274 petrols in the C 180 and C 200 have the fewest serious faults. Among diesels, a C 220 d with full records and the 2015 chain tensioner recall done is the most common and sensible choice.

Should I buy a W205 with Airmatic?

Only with a clean check. Airmatic gives the best ride, but only about 6 percent of buyers ordered it, and a failed air spring or compressor costs EUR 800-1,600 per axle according to Gebrauchtwagenberater.de.

How much is a used C-Class W205?

AutoScout24 asking prices in November 2026 show a median of about EUR 12,500, with most cars between EUR 8,500 and EUR 21,500. Facelifted cars from 2018 and plug-in hybrids sit at the top of that range.

Is the C 350 e a good used buy?

It is a niche choice. Its 6.2 kWh battery gave 31 km of NEDC range when new, owners report less in practice, and the boot shrinks to 335 litres. The later C 300 e from 2019 is stronger and newer.
