Used Skoda Octavia Mk3 buying guide: engines, DSG, mileage and prices

Verdict
Buy a 2017-2020 facelift Octavia with the 1.5 TSI 110 kW (150 PS), or the 2.0 TDI 110 kW (150 PS) if you cover long distances. It passes the TÜV test better than average, but many were fleet cars, so documented mileage matters most. Expect about €8,900, the median asking price in November 2026.

Used: AutoScout24 asking prices in eight EU countries, November 2026, whole generation (10th-90th percentile). New: ADAC list price in Germany for the cheapest version at launch. A real price depends on year, mileage, engine and condition.
The Octavia 3 is a Golf 7 underneath with a far bigger boot, and many were bought by fleets and taxi firms. That shows in the mileage: in the TÜV data quoted by Auto Bild in 2026, Octavias tested at eight to nine years old averaged 146,000 km. Buy on condition and history first, engine second.
Octavia 3 years, bodies and the 2017 facelift
Auto Express dates the UK launch of the liftback to March 2013, with the Combi estate following in June 2013 and the first vRS models about three months later. The four-wheel-drive Scout arrived in July 2014, a 4x4 vRS in January 2016, and the Octavia 4 replaced the range in 2020.
ADAC lists the facelift under 2016, while Auto Express puts the facelifted car on sale in January 2017, so most facelift cars on the road are 2017 registrations or later. The easiest way to tell them apart is at the front: ADAC points to the split double headlamps of the updated car. The facelift also brought a new interior and new technology, according to Auto Express.
The Combi estate is the one to look for if you tow or carry long items, and it has its own place among the best used diesel estates.
Engines to choose and engines to avoid
| Engine | kW (PS) | Built | Gearbox | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 TSI | 63 (86) / 77 (105) / 81 (110) | 02/2013-05/2016 | Manual or DQ200 DSG | Adequate, weak when loaded |

| 1.8 TSI | 132 (180) | from 02/2013 | Manual or DSG, 4x4 option | Quick; check oil consumption |
| 1.6 TDI | 66 (90) / 77 (105) / 81 (110) | 2013-2016 | Manual or DQ200 DSG | Cheap to run, needs long trips |
| 2.0 TDI | 110 (150) | from 02/2013 | Manual or DSG | Best long-distance buy |
| 2.0 TDI 4x4 | 135 (184) | from 10/2014 | DSG | Rare, strong tow car |
Pre-facelift build dates and outputs follow ADAC's catalogue; facelift engines follow Auto Express.
ADAC calls the entry petrol quiet and smooth but a little underpowered when the car is loaded, and singles out the version with cylinder deactivation as a good balance of pace and fuel use. That is the 1.5 TSI ACT with 110 kW (150 PS) in facelift cars, which What Car? names as its favourite engine overall. For older cars, What Car? prefers the 1.4 TSI because it was popular new and is easy to find.
Among diesels, What Car? recommends the 2.0 TDI over the 1.6 TDI for smoothness and power. ADAC's diesel report does not mention the EA189 emissions recall for this generation.
The 1.0 TSI three-cylinder is a sensible town engine but carries a KBA recall: injectors on Skoda models from 2018 and 2019 might not seal, letting fuel drip into the cylinder when parked. The 1.5 TSI Evo shared the Volkswagen Group cold-running judder that Honest John reported in 2020, fixed by a software update. The 1.8 and 2.0 TSI belong to the EA888 family, and Auto Bild lists higher oil consumption among the typical Octavia 3 faults.
DSG or manual
ADAC lists sometimes jerky take-off with the DSG among the Octavia 3's weak points, and Auto Bild's 2026 TÜV summary calls the DSG susceptible. auto motor und sport explains where the trouble sits: the 7-speed DQ200 with dry clutches, used with engines of up to 250 Nm, suffers in stop-start city traffic and with frequent towing. The same magazine notes a recall that swapped the original synthetic gear oil for mineral oil to prevent electronic faults.
The wet-clutch DQ250 and DQ381, fitted to the stronger engines, are more durable but need oil changes every 60,000 km and 120,000 km respectively, according to auto motor und sport. A manual is the low-risk choice for anyone who mostly drives in town.
Running costs and servicing
Auto Express describes two schedules. The fixed schedule asks for a service every 10,000 miles (about 16,000 km) or once a year; the variable schedule allows up to two years or 18,000 miles (about 29,000 km). Brake fluid is due at three years and then every two years, and the air conditioning should be recharged every two years.
The diesels and many petrols use a toothed belt. Auto Express gives the interval as five years or 140,000 miles (about 225,000 km), and What Car? suggests changing the water pump at the same time. That matters on this car, because ADAC names the coolant pump as one of the Octavia's breakdown hotspots, alongside charge pressure control on the turbo. The guide to timing belts and chains explains what happens if a belt is left too long.
What Car?'s owner survey rates reliability as mixed and says diesel models account for most reported faults. auto motor und sport lists the usual diesel concerns: a particulate filter that clogs on short trips, and EGR valves and turbochargers at high mileage. If your annual distance is low, a petrol is cheaper to keep.
Prices today and what you get for the money
ADAC's German list price for the cheapest Octavia 3 was €16,550 in 2013. In November 2026, AutoScout24 listings in eight European countries showed 4,001 cars, mostly between €5,600 and €13,000 in November 2026, with a median of about €8,900 in November 2026.
Asking prices cover the whole generation, so real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition. High-mileage 1.6 TDI liftbacks from 2013-2015 sit at the bottom of the range, often with well over 200,000 km. Facelift estates with the 1.5 TSI or 2.0 TDI and DSG, and the vRS, sit near the top. The Octavia 4 had a median of about €13,650 in November 2026, so a late Octavia 3 saves several thousand euros for a car with the same engines.
Because so many Octavias were worked hard, two cars of the same year can differ by more than the whole price spread suggests. Pay for documented mileage and service history before paying for equipment.
Octavia 3 against its rivals
TÜV results are a strong point. ADAC places the Octavia 3 slightly above average for defects, and Auto Bild's 2026 figures show 73.4% of eight-to-nine-year-old Octavias passing without defects, against a 71.7% average, despite their higher mileage. Auto Bild also says the third generation has the most durable suspension of the three Octavias it compares. In Auto Express's Driver Power survey the car ranked 14th in the 2017 used car poll.
The used Volkswagen Golf 7 has the same engines and gearboxes in a smaller body and is far more common on the used market. Compare boot space, rear legroom and price for the same year and engine, and buy whichever is in better condition. The Octavia hub page covers the older and newer generations.
How to find a good one
Start with the mileage evidence: service invoices, TÜV or MOT reports and the number of previous owners. A former taxi or fleet car is not automatically bad, but it needs proof of regular servicing, belt changes and DSG oil changes.
Then check the recall work. Auto Express lists a July 2016 recall for rear door child locks on cars built from November 2015 to April 2016, and a November 2017 recall for poorly cast rear wheel hubs on that year's cars. ADAC describes the same rear wheel carrier campaign, under which both rear wheel bearing housings are replaced. Auto Bild adds recalls for rear headrests and airbags.
On the test drive, listen for knocks from the suspension: ADAC reports more broken springs than average at TÜV inspections, mainly on cars with very high mileage. Inside, look for damp carpets, because Auto Express reports water collecting inside the front doors and reaching the footwells. On estates, check DAB reception. The guide on how to test drive a used car covers the rest of the drive.

Questions and answers
Is the Skoda Octavia 3 reliable?
Yes, by most measures. ADAC rates it well in its breakdown statistics, and in Auto Bild's 2026 TÜV data 73.4% of eight-to-nine-year-old cars passed without defects against a 71.7% average. Weak spots are the DQ200 DSG, coolant pumps, turbo boost control and springs on high-mileage cars.
Which Octavia 3 engine is best?
The 1.5 TSI with 110 kW (150 PS) in facelift cars is What Car?'s favourite and ADAC also likes the cylinder-deactivation version. For high annual mileage, the 2.0 TDI with 110 kW (150 PS) is smoother and stronger than the 1.6 TDI.
When was the Octavia 3 facelifted?
ADAC lists the facelift under 2016 and Auto Express puts it on sale in January 2017. Facelift cars have split double headlamps at the front, a new interior and new engines such as the 1.5 TSI, so most are 2017 registrations or later.
Does the Octavia 3 have a timing belt?
Yes, the diesels and most petrols use a toothed belt. Auto Express gives a change interval of five years or 140,000 miles, about 225,000 km, and What Car? advises replacing the water pump at the same time, which ADAC lists as a breakdown hotspot.
How much does a used Octavia 3 cost?
AutoScout24 listings showed a median of about €8,900 in November 2026, with most cars between €5,600 and €13,000. Early high-mileage 1.6 TDI cars cost least, while facelift estates, DSG models and the vRS cost most.
