Which GLB to buy: verdict

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • Best all-rounder: the electric GLB 250+, with 200 kW (272 PS), the 85 kWh battery and the longest range.
  • Fastest: the GLB 350 4MATIC, 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and all-wheel drive.
  • Lowest price: the GLB 180 mild hybrid at EUR 50,397 in Germany (2026).
  • Used: a facelifted X247 220 d 4MATIC (140 kW) for long distances and towing; seven seats are an option, so check the car you buy.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB is a boxy compact premium SUV with up to seven seats, sold since late 2019 and placed between the GLA and the GLC. The first generation, X247, used the front-wheel-drive MFA2 platform of the A-Class; the second, unveiled on 7 December 2025, moved to the 800-volt MMA platform and is offered as a battery-electric car and as a mild hybrid. The electric GLB also replaces the EQB.

In short

  • Two generations: X247 (2019-2025, facelifted in 2023) and the new GLB, built from January 2026 in Kecskemét, Hungary.
  • X247 engines: 1.3 and 2.0 petrol, 2.0 diesel, 85-175 kW (116-238 PS), plus the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 with 225 kW (306 PS).
  • New GLB: electric with 165-260 kW (224-354 PS) and up to 630 km WLTP range from an 85 kWh battery, or 1.5 mild hybrid petrol with 115-155 kW (156-211 PS).
  • German list prices for the new GLB start at EUR 50,397 for the GLB 180 and EUR 53,455 for the electric GLB 200 (ADAC, from March 2026).

GLB X247 (2019-2025)

Mercedes showed a near-production concept at the Shanghai motor show in April 2019 and unveiled the production GLB on 10 June 2019 in Park City, Utah. German sales began in December 2019. The GLB shares the MFA2 platform with the W177 A-Class and the GLA, but its wheelbase is 10 cm longer, at 2,829 mm, which is what makes space for an optional third row. At about 4.63 m it is only 22 mm shorter than the X253 GLC. The styling borrows the upright lines of the GLS and the old GLK.

The engines came from the A-Class. Front-wheel drive was standard, and 4MATIC all-wheel drive was available on the 2.0-litre versions. The GLB 180 used a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the others an eight-speed dual-clutch. In the United States only the GLB 250 4MATIC was offered at launch.

The facelift reached Germany in September 2023. It brought new headlights and tail lights, updated MBUX infotainment, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for the petrol engines. Mercedes also sold a battery-electric version of this body, the EQB, from 2021.

The new GLB (2026-)

The second-generation GLB was presented on 7 December 2025 and went into series production in Kecskemét in January 2026. It is the second and largest model on the MMA platform after the CLA. The wheelbase grew by 60 mm to 2,889 mm, and Autocar reports that the third-row seats suit passengers up to about 168 cm (5 ft 6 in). The electric versions came first; the mild-hybrid petrol models follow during 2026.

The electric GLB uses an 85 kWh usable battery in the 250+ and 350 4MATIC and a 58 kWh battery in the GLB 200. It charges at up to 320 kW DC on 800-volt chargers, and Autocar reports that a converter for 400-volt chargers is an option. The mild hybrid combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a small electric motor in the gearbox and a 1.3 kWh battery, enough for short, slow electric-only stretches.

Trims and equipment

German trims for the new GLB are Progressive, AMG Line, AMG Line Plus and Night Edition. Auto Express praises the comfortable, quiet ride and the amount of technology, but notes some harder plastics in the cabin, noticeable body roll and expensive top versions. The X247 had the widescreen cockpit with MBUX from the start, optional adaptive dampers and, after 2023, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety

Euro NCAP tested the X247 in 2019 and awarded five stars: 92% for adult occupants, 88% for child occupants, 78% for vulnerable road users and 74% for safety assist. The test car was a GLB 200 AMG Line weighing 1,555 kg, and the result covered every engine. The rating expired on 1 January 2026. The new GLB had not been tested by Euro NCAP by August 2026, according to Auto Express. Other results are collected on our safety page.

Reliability and known issues

The new GLB was too new for Auto Express's 2026 Driver Power survey, in which Mercedes ranked first of 30 manufacturers. The standard warranty is three years with unlimited mileage, and electric models are serviced every two years or 30,000 km (18,650 miles). Our sources contain no fault statistics or recalls for the X247, so we do not list any.
