kW, PS, hp and bhp

The kilowatt is the official SI unit of power and appears in every EU type approval. PS (Pferdestärke, also CV or ch) is the metric horsepower used in Europe: 1 PS = 735.5 W, so 1 kW = 1.36 PS. hp is the mechanical (imperial) horsepower used in the UK and US: 1 hp = 745.7 W, so 1 kW = 1.341 hp. bhp (brake horsepower) is the same unit measured at the crankshaft — here it is converted with the same factor as hp. Because 1 PS is about 1.4% smaller than 1 hp, a 150 PS engine produces about 148 hp.

Torque: Nm and lb-ft

1 lb-ft = 1.3558 Nm, so 1 Nm = 0.7376 lb-ft. A diesel with 400 Nm develops about 295 lb-ft.

Frequently asked questions

How many hp is 100 kW?

100 kW is 134.1 hp (mechanical horsepower) or 136 PS (metric horsepower).

Is PS the same as hp?

Almost: 1 PS = 0.986 hp. European makers quote PS, British and American makers quote hp or bhp.

How do I convert Nm to lb-ft?

Multiply the Nm figure by 0.7376. For example, 350 Nm is about 258 lb-ft.
