Which Tonale to buy: verdict
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Best all-rounder: the 1.5 VGT Hybrid 175 (or the 118 kW (160 PS) version before the facelift). It has the full 500-litre boot, front-wheel drive and 8.5 s to 100 km/h.
- For high mileage: the 1.6 diesel with 320 Nm and 5.3 l/100 km WLTP, now the cheapest Tonale in Germany.
- For company car drivers who can charge: the plug-in hybrid Q4, with all-wheel drive, 6.6 s to 100 km/h and 67 km of electric range.
- Used: a 2022-2025 1.5 Hybrid Sprint or Ti offers the same body and safety rating for less.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact premium SUV built at Pomigliano d'Arco near Naples since February 2022. It is Alfa Romeo's first electrified car, sold in Europe as a 48-volt mild hybrid, a 1.6 diesel and a 1.3 plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive. A facelift on sale from November 2025 raised the mild hybrid to 128 kW (174 PS) and kept the 4.5-metre body, 500-litre boot and five-star Euro NCAP rating.

Generations and model history
Alfa Romeo unveiled the Tonale Concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. The production car took almost three years longer: production at Pomigliano d'Arco started in February 2022. So far there has been one generation with a facelift, which ADAC dates from November 2025.
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tonale (pre-facelift) | 965 | 2022-2025 | 5-door SUV | 1.5 MHEV, 1.6 diesel, 1.3 PHEV; 2.0 petrol (North America) | 96-206 kW (130-280 PS) |
| Tonale (facelift) | 965 | 2025- | 5-door SUV | 1.5 MHEV, 1.6 diesel, 1.3 PHEV | 96-197 kW (130-268 PS) |
The facelift dropped the 96 kW (130 PS) petrol and raised the mild hybrid to 128 kW (174 PS) system output. The plug-in hybrid's system output went from 206 kW (280 PS) to 197 kW (268 PS) in the new homologation, while its electric range is now listed at 67 km WLTP.
In August 2022 Stellantis showed the Dodge Hornet, a twin with its own front end and lights for the USA and Canada, sold at lower prices. North American Tonales used a 2.0-litre GME T4 turbo with 191 kW (256 hp) and a ZF nine-speed automatic, or the plug-in hybrid. Wikipedia reports that the Tonale was withdrawn from North America after the 2026 model year.
Each Tonale also comes with a non-fungible token (NFT) that records the car's maintenance history; Stellantis says the certificate can help support resale values.

Data from ADAC for the German market; "n/a" means the figure was not in our sources. The mild hybrid uses a 15 kW (20 PS) electric motor inside the dual-clutch gearbox, fed by a 0.8 kWh 48-volt battery. The 1.5 is a version of the GSE Firefly engine; the VGT has a variable-geometry turbocharger.
The plug-in hybrid combines a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine driving the front wheels with a rear electric motor of 90 kW (122 PS), which gives the Q4 all-wheel drive. Its battery has 15.5 kWh gross and 12.0 kWh net capacity. Front-wheel drive is standard on all other versions.

Trims, prices and equipment
At launch in Germany (2022) the line-up was Super, Sprint, Ti and Veloce, with an Edizione Speciale launch model; Tributo Italiano and Intensa followed. ADAC lists the 1.5 T Hybrid Super TCT at EUR 36,800 (2022) and the 1.3 Plug-in Hybrid Intensa Q4 at EUR 62,100 (2025).
After the facelift, the German range is Sprint, Ti, Veloce and, from October 2026, Luna Rossa:
| Version (facelift) | Power | List price (Germany) |

Standard cars have 18-inch wheels; the launch edition had 20-inch wheels. All versions have a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen running Uconnect 5. The Veloce adds adaptive dampers and four-piston front brakes.

Safety: Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP awarded the Tonale five stars in July 2022 (1.5 mild hybrid): 83% for adult occupants, 85% for child occupants, 67% for vulnerable road users and 85% for safety assist. Euro NCAP noted that the car met all requirements for five stars but lost points for the lack of a centre airbag and for being an aggressive partner in frontal crashes. Its 2023 assisted driving test was graded "Moderate". More results are in our safety section.
Reliability and known issues
The Tonale has no long-term reliability record in the major European surveys in our sources, so we make no claims here. Buyers of the plug-in hybrid should check the charging history on a used car, since fuel use depends heavily on it.
