Concept, premiere and production
The ID. Aero concept of June 2022 previewed the shape. Volkswagen called it the most aerodynamic ID. model so far. A camouflaged near-production car appeared at CES in Las Vegas on 4 January 2023. The world premiere followed on 17 April 2023, held at the same time in Berlin and at the Shanghai motor show.
The Emden plant in Lower Saxony began ID.7 production in August 2023, and sales in Germany started in September. The Pro S with the larger battery arrived in December 2023. In China, FAW-Volkswagen builds a sister model in Foshan called the ID.7 Vizzion; it sold 752 units in 2023, 6,684 in 2024 and 2,094 in 2025. A launch in North America was planned for 2024, postponed in May 2024 and cancelled in January 2025.
Tourer and GTX (2024)
Volkswagen showed the ID.7 Tourer on 19 February 2024 and put it on sale that summer. It has the same 4,961 mm length as the liftback. The estate roof adds 73 litres with the rear bench in use and 128 litres when it is folded. Its drag coefficient is 0.242, compared with 0.234 for the liftback.
The GTX followed on 13 March 2024 and went on sale in June. A second motor on the front axle gives all-wheel drive, and the two motors together produce 250 kW (340 PS). Torque rises to 679 Nm, and 0–100 km/h takes 5.4 seconds. Like the other versions, the GTX is limited to 180 km/h. In Germany, 1,456 of the 15,649 ID.7s registered up to December 2024 had all-wheel drive.

The rear motor is Volkswagen's APP 550 unit. The GTX adds an AKA 150 asynchronous motor at the front. The cells come from LG Energy Solution with NCM712 chemistry. On direct current, the 77 kWh battery charges from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes; the 86 kWh battery needs under 30 minutes. AC charging runs at up to 11 kW. The top speed of the rear-wheel-drive versions is 180 km/h.
Our fuel cost calculator compares charging costs with a diesel estate. Low drag helps the range: the liftback's Cd of 0.234 is well below the 0.267 of the smaller ID.3.
Cabin, equipment and space
The dashboard has a 38 cm (15-inch) central touchscreen and a head-up display with augmented-reality navigation. Options include a 700 W Harman Kardon system with 14 speakers, massage seats and a panoramic roof whose tint can be switched by voice. Automatic parking is standard and can take over from more than 16 m away from the space.
The liftback carries 532 litres, or 1,586 litres with the rear seats folded. The Tourer takes 605 to 1,714 litres. The saloon it replaces is described in our Volkswagen Passat B8 article, and the size comparison tool puts the two side by side.
Safety, prices and awards
Euro NCAP tested a left-hand-drive ID.7 Pro in autumn 2023 and gave it five stars. It earned 95 percent in the adult-occupant category, 88 for child safety, 83 for pedestrians and cyclists and 80 for safety assistance. The adult score was higher than the ID.3's 87 percent of 2020 and the ID. Buzz's 92 percent of 2022.
