Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
A used G08 is an affordable entry to an electric BMW: one rear motor, a proven X3 body and around 450 km of WLTP range, but only 150 kW charging. Post-September 2021 cars have the bigger display and M Sport package. Check that the charging cable set is complete and ask for a battery health report.
The Neue Klasse iX3 is a different league for long-distance driving. The iX3 40 is the better value and will suit most buyers; the 50 xDrive adds all-wheel drive, 345 kW and about 170 km more range. Larger alternatives within the brand are the BMW iX and, for city driving, the earlier BMW i3. Every BMW model is listed in the BMW catalogue.
The BMW iX3 is BMW's electric mid-size SUV, sold in two quite different generations. The first, the G08 of 2020–2024, was a battery-electric X3 built only in Shenyang, China, with 210 kW and an 80 kWh battery. The second, launched in 2025 as the first Neue Klasse model, is built in Debrecen, Hungary. It offers up to 345 kW, 108 kWh, about 805 km of WLTP range and 400 kW charging.
In short
- G08 (2020–2024): 210 kW (286 PS), 400 Nm, 80 kWh gross, 150 kW DC charging, built by BMW Brilliance in China.
- NA5 (since 2025): 800-volt Neue Klasse architecture; iX3 50 xDrive with 345 kW and iX3 40 with 235 kW.
- The new car charges at up to 400 kW and adds about 372 km of range in 10 minutes.
- German prices: €66,300 for the G08 in 2021; €63,400 (iX3 40) and €70,900 (iX3 50 xDrive) for the Neue Klasse in 2026.

G08 (2020–2024): the electric X3 from Shenyang
BMW first showed the Concept iX3 at the Beijing motor show in April 2018. The production car was presented in July 2020, complete with drive sounds composed by Hans Zimmer. The first customer car left the BMW Brilliance Automotive plant at Dadong in Shenyang on 29 September 2020. It was built on the same line as the combustion X3 and exported from China, with deliveries in Germany from the end of January 2021. The batteries came from a new battery centre at Tiexi, opened in September 2020.
Technically the G08 was an X3 body with the fifth generation of BMW's eDrive: the motor, power electronics and transmission share one housing, and the synchronous motor needs no rare earths. A single motor drives the rear wheels with 210 kW and 400 Nm, enough for 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds; top speed is limited to 180 km/h. The DIN kerb weight is 2,185 kg.
| G08 data | Value |
|---|---|
| Battery | 80 kWh gross, 74 kWh net (73.8 kWh in the 2021 price list) |
| WLTP range | up to 460 km at launch; 450–458 km in the German list of December 2020 |
| AC charging | 11 kW, a full charge in about 7.5 hours |
| DC charging | 150 kW, 0–80 % in 34 minutes; 10 minutes add about 100 km |
| Consumption | 18.6–19.0 kWh/100 km (2021 price list) |
The 2021 update, built from September 2021, brought a larger central display and the M Sport package as standard. BMW stopped offering the G08 after the fourth-generation X3 (G45) was presented in June 2024. The combustion and plug-in models of that family are covered in the BMW X3 generations guide.

Neue Klasse iX3 since 2025
The second-generation iX3 is not derived from the X3; it is built on BMW's new electric architecture. It was previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept in March 2024. The production car was unveiled at the Munich motor show in September 2025 as the first series model of the Neue Klasse. Series production began in October 2025 at the new plant in Debrecen, Hungary; orders opened in September 2025 and the first cars were delivered in March 2026.
The new architecture runs at 800 volts and uses large-format cylindrical cells of the 4695 type in a cell-to-pack design, supplied by EVE Energy. The car can also return energy to a house or the grid and power external devices (V2H, V2G and V2L).
| Version | Drive | Power | Torque | Battery (net) | WLTP range | DC peak | 0–100 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iX3 40 | RWD | 235 kW (320 PS) | 500 Nm | 82.6 kWh | up to 635 km | 300 kW | 5.9 s |
| iX3 50 xDrive | AWD | 345 kW (469 PS) | 641–645 Nm (sources differ) | about 108 kWh | up to 805 km | 400 kW | 4.9 s |
Both versions take 21 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent at a fast charger. For the 50 xDrive, Wikipedia gives 372 km of added range in ten minutes. That is about four-fifths of the G08's entire WLTP range, in less than a third of the 34 minutes the G08 needed to reach 80 per cent.

Size, boot and practicality
The NA5 is 4,782 mm long, 1,895 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall on a 2,897 mm wheelbase. AUTO BILD gives a boot of 520 to 1,750 litres plus a 58-litre front compartment, and a towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg. Wikipedia lists a kerb weight of 2,285 kg for the 50 xDrive; AUTO BILD gives 2,360 kg including the driver. Size differences against other SUVs can be checked in the size comparison tool.
iX3 L for China
For the Chinese market BMW revealed a long-wheelbase iX3 L on 22 April 2026, built at Dadong in Shenyang. Its wheelbase is 107 mm longer and the car 103 mm longer overall. Three versions were announced. The 30L has a 77 kWh LFP battery and 630 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle; the 40L xDrive has 86.9 kWh and 702 km, the 50L xDrive 113.4 kWh and 919 km. CLTC ranges are not comparable with WLTP figures.
