Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • Best all-rounder: the 220i, with 135 kW, 7.5 s to 100 km/h and 6.4 l/100 km.
  • For high mileage: the 220d with 400 Nm.
  • Fastest without an M badge: the M240i xDrive with 275 kW and the B58 six.
  • Open-top or manual: a used F23 Convertible or an F22 with the six-speed manual, both no longer offered.
  • Value used: an F22 230i (2016-2021) with 185 kW and 350 Nm.

The BMW 2 Series Coupé is BMW's smallest rear-wheel-drive coupé, the successor to the 1 Series Coupé and Convertible. The first generation (F22 Coupé, F23 Convertible) was built in Leipzig from 2013 to 2021; the current G42, made only as a coupé in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, since September 2021, uses the CLAR platform of the 3 Series. In Germany it starts at EUR 46,300 (2025) for the 218i.

In short

  • Two generations: F22/F23 (2014-2021, coupé and convertible) and G42 (2021-, coupé only).
  • G42 engines: 2.0 four-cylinders from 115 kW (156 PS) to the M240i xDrive's 3.0 six with 275 kW (374 PS) in Europe.
  • Rear-wheel drive as standard, xDrive on M240i and 230i xDrive; eight-speed automatic only.
  • The four-door 2 Series Gran Coupé and the 2 Series Active Tourer MPV are different, front-drive cars.

F22/F23 (2014-2021). Production of the coupé began in Leipzig in November 2013, next to the F20 1 Series hatchback with which it shared its basis; the F23 convertible followed in 2014. The range started with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder 218i and ended with six-cylinder M235i and, from 2016, M240i models. A facelift (LCI) arrived in July 2017, when the 225d was dropped; darkened rear lights followed in March 2019. Gearboxes were a six-speed manual, an eight-speed automatic or a seven-speed dual-clutch.

G42 (2021-). Revealed in July 2021, the second generation moved to the CLAR architecture of the G20 3 Series and the G22 4 Series and gained roughly 50:50 weight distribution. There is no convertible and no manual gearbox. Launch versions were 220d, 220i, 230i and the M240i xDrive; the 218i joined in 2022. ADAC lists a model update with new versions from August 2024.

The M2 and racing versions

The fastest 2 Series cars carry the M2 name. The F87 M2 of 2016 used the N55 3.0-litre six with 272 kW (370 PS) and 465 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The M2 Competition replaced it in 2018 with the S55 engine from the M3 and 302 kW (410 PS); the M2 CS of 2020, planned at 2,200 units, had 331 kW (450 PS) and 550 Nm. The second-generation M2 (G87), revealed in October 2022, is based on the G42 and uses a detuned S58 3.0 twin-turbo six with 600 Nm; it is one of the few current BMWs still offered with a manual gearbox.

For customer racing, BMW built the M235i Racing (2014-2018) with 245 kW (333 PS), an eight-speed automatic and a mechanical limited-slip differential, followed from the 2019 season by the M240i Racing with 254 kW (345 PS) and 460 Nm.

FAQ

Is the 2 Series Gran Coupé the same car as the 2 Series Coupé?

No. The four-door Gran Coupé (from 2019) and the Active Tourer MPV (from 2014) are based on BMW's front-wheel-drive platforms. Only the two-door coupé is rear-wheel drive.

Is there still a 2 Series Convertible?

No. The F23 Convertible ended in 2021, and the G42 is only made as a coupé.

Can you get a manual BMW 2 Series Coupé?

Not on the G42 coupés; they have an eight-speed automatic. The F22/F23 offered a six-speed manual, and the current M2 is available with one.

Where is the BMW 2 Series Coupé built?

The current G42 is built only in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The F22 and F23 were made in Leipzig, Germany.
