Most reliable used cars 2026: eight models with the fewest breakdowns

Updated 8 cars in this ranking

Reliability is the biggest worry when buying a used car, and it is also where marketing and reputation mislead most. This list is built on two large German data sets instead. The ADAC breakdown statistics count roadside call-outs per 1,000 cars by year of first registration. The TÜV Report records defects found at the compulsory roadworthiness test.

The ADAC Pannenstatistik 2026, published in April 2026, covers cars first registered from 2016 to 2023. The TÜV Report 2026, published in November 2025, is based on about 9.5 million inspections. Most of the models are sold across Europe, so the results are useful beyond Germany.

Quick picks

  • Most reliable small car: Volkswagen Polo – 5.3–6.4 breakdowns per 1,000 cars for 2019–2021.
  • Most reliable premium car: BMW 3 Series – 2.5 per 1,000 for 2021 cars.
  • Most reliable city car: Toyota Aygo.
  • Surprise: Tesla Model 3 – very few breakdowns, but poor TÜV results.

Figures are breakdowns per 1,000 cars by year of first registration, as shown on the ADAC model pages; a dash means no figure was published. Older cars naturally break down more often, so compare models of the same year. For the right engine and generation of each model, see the version notes in each entry.

  1. 1. Volkswagen Polo VI

    Best small car record

    Production years
    2017–present
    Body type
    Sedan, Hatchback
    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel
    Power output
    48–147 kW (65–200 PS)

The ADAC Pannenstatistik 2026 names the Polo among the most reliable small cars, and its year-by-year record shows why. Breakdowns fall steadily from 10.3 per 1,000 cars for 2017 registrations to 6.4 for 2019 and 5.3 for 2021. The sixth generation, on sale since 2017 and facelifted in 2021, covers all of those years. Euro NCAP gave the facelifted car five stars in 2022. It suits buyers who want a compact first or second car. The drawback: early sixth-generation cars from 2017 have a breakdown rate almost twice that of 2021 cars, so newer is clearly better.

    Pros

    • Among ADAC's most reliable small cars (2026)
    • 5.3 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2021 cars
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2022)

    Cons

    • 2017 cars break down almost twice as often as 2021 cars

    Sedan, Station wagon
    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel, Plug-in hybrid
    Power output
    115–285 kW (156–387 PS)

The 3 Series is one of ADAC's most reliable mid-size cars, with breakdown rates of 6.6 to 7.0 per 1,000 for 2017–2019 cars and just 2.5 for 2021. The seventh generation (G20), sold since 2019 and rated five stars by Euro NCAP that year, is the one to look for. ADAC lists engine-cooling faults for 2018 registrations, which are mostly the previous F30, so check the cooling system on those. It suits drivers who want a premium saloon or Touring estate with a good record. The drawback: 2016–2019 cars break down almost three times as often as 2021 cars.

    Pros

    • 2.5 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2021 cars
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2019, G20)
    • Saloon and Touring estate

    Cons

    • Older cars break down far more often; cooling faults on 2018 cars

  3. 3. Toyota Aygo II

    Best city car record

    Production years
    2014–2022
    Body type
    Hatchback
    Fuel
    Petrol
    Power output
    51–53 kW (69–72 PS)

While larger Toyotas struggle in the ADAC statistics, the little Aygo is listed among the most reliable city cars. The second generation, built from 2014 to 2022 with 51–53 kW, shows 7.7 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2019 cars and 5.3 for 2021. The newer Aygo X from 2022 continues the line with up to 85 kW in hybrid form. The drawbacks: ADAC lists the starter battery as a fault on 2017 cars, and Euro NCAP gave four stars in 2014.

    Pros

    • Among ADAC's most reliable city cars
    • 5.3 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2021 cars
    • 7.7 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2019 cars

    Cons

    • Four-star Euro NCAP (2014)

    2019–present
    Body type
    Hatchback, Station wagon
    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, Plug-in hybrid
    Power output
    66–235 kW (90–320 PS)

ADAC lists the Golf among the most reliable compact cars of 2026. Its breakdown rate stays below 10 per 1,000 for every registration year from 2016 to 2023, falling to 7.1 for 2019 cars and 2.0 for 2023 cars. The eighth generation went on sale in December 2019, so 2020 and later cars have the newer design; Euro NCAP awarded five stars in 2025. It suits buyers who want one car for every job. The drawback: 2021 cars show a higher rate (9.6) than 2019 and 2020 cars, so check the service history of early eighth-generation cars.

    Pros

    • Below 10 breakdowns per 1,000 in every year shown
    • 2.0 per 1,000 for 2023 cars
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2025)

    Cons

    • Higher rate for 2021 cars than for 2019–2020

  5. 5. SEAT Leon Mk4

    Best value reliable compact

    Production years
    2020–present
    Body type
    Hatchback, Station wagon
    Fuel
Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, Plug-in hybrid, LPG / CNG

The Leon shares its platform and engines with the Golf but costs less new in Germany, and its ADAC record is just as consistent. Breakdowns stay between 6.9 and 9.2 per 1,000 for 2016–2021 registrations, with 2.4 for 2023 cars. The fourth generation, presented in January 2020, received five Euro NCAP stars in 2025; the third generation (2012–2020) covers the earlier years. It suits buyers who want Golf mechanicals for less money. The drawback: 2020 and 2021 cars show 8.3 per 1,000, slightly worse than 2019 cars at 6.9.

    Pros

    • 6.9–9.2 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2016–2021
    • Golf mechanicals
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2025)

    Cons

    • 2020–2021 cars slightly worse than 2019

  6. 6. Suzuki Vitara LY

    Lowest-risk small SUV

    Production years
    2015–present
    Body type
    SUV
    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel
    Power output
    82–103 kW (111–140 PS)

The Vitara has one of the lowest breakdown rates of any SUV in the ADAC statistics: 4.7 per 1,000 for 2017 cars, 6.1 for 2019 and 2.6 for 2023. The current generation has been built since 2015, so a used Vitara is a mature design, and it was rated five stars by Euro NCAP in 2015. Four-wheel-drive ALLGRIP versions make it a sensible choice for rural drivers. The drawback: 2020 and 2021 cars show 10.4 breakdowns per 1,000, with the starter battery listed as a cause, so check the battery on those years.

    Pros

    • 4.7 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2017 cars
    • Mature design built since 2015
    • ALLGRIP four-wheel drive available

    Cons

    • Starter-battery breakdowns on 2020–2021 cars

  7. 7. Volkswagen Passat B8

    Best estate for high mileage

    Production years
    2014–2023
    Body type
    Sedan, Station wagon
    Fuel
    Petrol, Diesel, Plug-in hybrid
    Power output
    81–206 kW (110–280 PS)

The Passat is among ADAC's most reliable mid-size cars, and the B8 generation (2014–2023) covers most used examples. The record improves sharply with age: 7.7 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2021 cars and 4.1 for 2022. Euro NCAP gave the B8 five stars in 2014, and the Variant estate is the more common body. It suits high-mileage drivers who want space. The drawback: 2018 and 2019 cars show 13.9 and 12.9 breakdowns per 1,000, with exhaust gas recirculation listed as a weak point for 2018.

    Pros

    • 4.1 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2022 cars
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2014)
    • Large Variant estate boot

    Cons

    • EGR faults listed for 2018 cars

  8. 8. Tesla Model 3

Fewest breakdowns, but check it carefully

    Production years
    2016–present
    Body type
    Sedan
    Fuel
    Electric
    Power output
    170–393 kW (231–534 PS)

The Model 3 shows how differently two surveys can judge one car. ADAC names it among the most reliable mid-size cars: 1.4 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2021 cars and 0.7 for 2022, among the lowest figures of any car. Yet the TÜV Report 2026 placed it among the three worst cars in both the 2–3-year and 4–5-year age groups, because inspectors find many defects at the roadworthiness test. Euro NCAP awarded five stars in 2019. It suits buyers who want a used electric car with few roadside breakdowns. The drawback: have the brakes, suspension and lights checked before you buy.

    Pros

    • 0.7 breakdowns per 1,000 for 2022 cars
    • Among ADAC's most reliable mid-size cars
    • Five-star Euro NCAP (2019)

    Cons

    • Among the three worst cars in the TÜV Report 2026 age groups

How we chose

Selection. We took the models that the ADAC Pannenstatistik 2026 names as the most reliable in their class and kept those with a published model page on 1cars. Then we checked their year-by-year breakdown rates on the ADAC model pages. Models with strong results but no page in our catalogue, such as the Mazda 2 (overall winner for 2–3-year-old cars in the TÜV Report 2026), could not be included.

Limits of the data. ADAC counts only the breakdowns its own patrols attend, which it estimates at about half of all breakdowns, and excludes owner errors such as an empty tank. A flat starter battery caused 45.4 per cent of call-outs in 2025, so the statistic says a lot about 12-volt electrics and less about engines and gearboxes. The TÜV Report measures defects at inspection, and the two can disagree, as they do for the Tesla Model 3. Neither replaces a pre-purchase inspection and a full service history.

Cars to approach with care. The ADAC Pannenstatistik 2026 lists these as less reliable: the Toyota RAV4 (2017–2022 registrations), Toyota Corolla (2023), Toyota C-HR (2020–2022), Toyota Yaris (2021–2023), Nissan Qashqai (2019), Ford Kuga (2021), Opel Insignia (2016–2019 and 2022) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2022–2023). Our guide to used diesel estates covers the weak points of several other popular used cars.

Ranking. The order is editorial and reflects breakdown rates across several registration years, not one figure. Prices are not given, because used prices vary too much by country, age and mileage. Engines and generations of each car are on our model pages, for example the Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Golf and Suzuki Vitara.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most reliable used car?

On the ADAC breakdown statistics, small and compact cars from the Volkswagen Group, the BMW 3 Series and the Toyota Aygo perform best across several registration years. In the TÜV Report 2026, the Mazda 2 was the overall winner among 2–3-year-old cars, with only 2.9 per cent having significant defects.

Are Toyotas still the most reliable cars?

Not on every measure. In the ADAC Pannenstatistik 2026, the RAV4 (2017–2022), Corolla (2023), C-HR and Yaris are listed among the less reliable models, mainly because of starter-battery breakdowns. The Toyota Aygo, by contrast, is among the most reliable city cars.

Why is the Tesla Model 3 good in one survey and bad in another?

ADAC counts roadside breakdowns, and Model 3s rarely break down. The TÜV counts defects at the roadworthiness test, and the Model 3 was among the three worst cars in both the 2–3-year and 4–5-year age groups of the TÜV Report 2026.

What fails most often on used cars?

The 12-volt starter battery, which caused 45.4 per cent of ADAC call-outs in 2025. Check the battery's age and condition before you buy, especially on cars that have stood for long periods or cover only short trips.
