Which 500X to buy
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Lowest running costs: a 2022-2024 1.5 Hybrid with the seven-speed DCT.
- Best used value: a 2019-on 1.0 FireFly with 88 kW (120 PS) and a manual gearbox.
- For high mileage or towing: a 1.6 or 2.0 MultiJet diesel; only the 2.0 was offered with AWD in Europe.
- For open-air driving: the Dolcevita with its fabric folding roof.
The Fiat 500X is a small crossover that Fiat built at Melfi in southern Italy from 2014 to 2024, alongside its mechanical twin, the Jeep Renegade. It took the styling of the Fiat 500 city car and stretched it into a 4.25-metre five-door with optional all-wheel drive. Over ten years it used petrol, diesel and, from 2022, a 48V mild-hybrid engine, and in its best year, 2016, it found 104,931 buyers in Europe.
In short
- One generation (2014-2024), facelifted in 2018 with new FireFly turbo petrol engines and updated again in 2022 with a 1.5 mild hybrid.
- Power from 81 kW (110 PS) in the 1.6 E.torQ to 134 kW (182 PS) in the North American 2.4; most European cars have 88-110 kW (120-150 PS).
- 4,248 mm long (4,273 mm as the 500X Cross), with a 350-litre boot.
- Four Euro NCAP stars in 2015; replaced in Fiat's range by the Fiat 600 rather than by a direct successor.

Generations and updates
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500X | 334 | 2014-2024 | 5-door crossover, Dolcevita soft-top | 1.0 and 1.3 FireFly turbo, 1.4 MultiAir, 1.5 hybrid, 1.6 E.torQ, 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet, 2.4 (USA) | 81-134 kW (110-182 PS) |
There was only one generation. Fiat offered two looks from the start: the standard version and the 500X Cross, whose different bumpers make it 25 mm longer.
2018 facelift. The first major update brought the turbocharged FireFly petrol family to Europe, listed from the 2019 model year: a 1.0 three-cylinder with 88 kW (120 PS) and a manual gearbox, and a 1.3 four-cylinder with 110 kW (150 PS) and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
2022 hybrid. In February 2022 Fiat introduced the 500X Hybrid, which made Fiat's whole European range electrified. Its 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder has 96 kW (130 hp) and 240 Nm and works with a 15 kW, 48V electric motor inside a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Fiat said CO2 emissions were up to 11% lower than with the 1.3 T4, and that the engine could idle for up to 47% of the WLTP cycle (62% in the urban part). The same powertrain went into the Dolcevita soft-top version presented in April 2022.
Industry reports from late 2023 said that 2024 would be the 500X's final production year, and there was no direct successor; the Fiat 600, introduced in July 2023, took its place in the range.

| 2.4 Tigershark | North America, 2015-2018 | 130-134 kW (180-182 PS) | 237 Nm | 9-speed automatic |
The years in the table follow Wikipedia's engine list; individual markets did not get every engine every year. The nine-speed automatic came from the Chrysler side of FCA. In Europe, all-wheel drive was offered only on the 2.0 diesel and on higher-powered petrol versions with an automatic gearbox; in North America, AWD was optional on most trims. North America also got a 132 kW (179 PS) version of the 1.3 turbo with the nine-speed automatic. To translate these outputs into other units, use our power converter.

| Width | 1,786 mm | 70.3 in |

The boot has an optional adjustable floor that can sit flush with the loading lip or drop lower for more height. Fiat designed the Dolcevita's fabric roof so that boot space stays the same as in the closed car. Sales
| Year | Europe | Italy |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 74,262 | 32,579 |
| 2016 | 104,931 | 46,233 |
| 2018 | 94,960 | 49,931 |
| 2020 | 58,853 | 31,831 |
| 2022 | 32,153 | 22,244 |
| 2024 | - | 11,278 |
Italy was always the biggest market, taking about half of European sales. In the United States the 500X never became a volume car: 12,599 sales in 2016 was the best year, falling to 129 in 2025.
Trims and equipment
European trim names changed over time and included Pop, Pop Star, Lounge, Cross, Cross Plus and Sport; the 2022 Hybrid was offered as Club, Cross and Sport, plus a (RED) special series. In the UK the 500X Hybrid started at GBP 27,585 in 2022 (about EUR 32,500). Standard safety equipment on later UK cars included six airbags, stability control, traffic-sign recognition and lane-keeping assistance, while blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking stayed on the options list.
Safety: Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP awarded the 500X four stars in April 2015: 86% for adult occupants, 85% for child occupants, 74% for pedestrians and 64% for safety assist. The safety assist score held it back, because the autonomous emergency braking system was optional and Fiat did not expect most cars to have it, so Euro NCAP did not include it. In the United States, the IIHS named the 2016 500X a Top Safety Pick+. Compare its result with other small SUVs in our safety ratings.
Reliability and known issues
The 500X has not done well in owner surveys. In the UK Driver Power survey of 2018 it came last of 75 cars for reliability and build quality, and Carbuyer reported that about 13.8% of owners had a fault within the first 12 months. We have not found a sourced list of specific recurring faults. Owners praised running costs, styling and visibility but were less positive about interior finish and practicality.
