Which Renegade to buy
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Simplest choice: a 2018-2022 1.0 T-GDI with the manual gearbox, front-wheel drive.
- For towing and long trips: a 2.0 MultiJet diesel with Active Drive.
- For off-road use: a Trailhawk, either the 2.0 MultiJet diesel or the 4xe with 177 kW (240 PS).
- For short commutes with home charging: the 4xe.
The Jeep Renegade is a small SUV that Jeep built in Melfi, Italy, from 2014 to October 2025, alongside its technical twin, the Fiat 500X. It was the first Jeep made only outside North America and, until the Avenger arrived, the smallest Jeep. Unusually for its class it offered real off-road hardware: the Trailhawk version had low-range gearing, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid drove the rear wheels electrically.
In short
- B-segment SUV, code BU, one generation (2014-2025 in Europe) with a facelift in 2018; still built in Goiana, Brazil, for Latin America.
- Engines in Europe from the 1.0 turbo with 88 kW (120 PS) to the 4xe plug-in hybrid with 177 kW (240 PS); 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet diesels until 2022.
- 4,236 mm long, 351-litre boot (330 l for the 4xe).
- Five Euro NCAP stars in 2014, three stars in the 2019 retest.

Generations and model history
Jeep revealed the Renegade at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, and production started in Melfi in late August 2014. There has been only one generation.
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / PS) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renegade (pre-facelift) | BU | 2014-2018 | 5-door SUV | 1.6 E-torQ, 1.4 MultiAir, 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet | 70-125 kW (95-170 PS) |
| Renegade (facelift) | BU | 2018-2025 | 5-door SUV | 1.0 and 1.3 turbo, 1.5 e-Hybrid, 1.3 4xe PHEV, 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet | 88-177 kW (120-240 PS) |
The European facelift of June 2018 brought redesigned bumpers, LED headlamps inspired by the Wrangler, a larger grille, touchscreens of 7 to 8.4 inches with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and new turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol engines built in Bielsko-Biala, Poland. The 4xe plug-in hybrid joined in 2020 and the 48-volt e-Hybrid in 2022. From 2024 the European range was hybrid only.
Stellantis ended Renegade and Fiat 500X production in Melfi in October 2025 after 11 years, and the last German list prices run to October 2025 (ADAC). No direct successor has been confirmed. The Avenger, about 4.08 m long, is now Jeep's smallest model. In Brazil the Renegade is still built and was updated in 2023 with a 1.3 turbo flex-fuel engine.

The e-Hybrid pairs a 1.5 four-cylinder with a 15 kW (20 PS) electric motor in the gearbox; it is front-wheel drive. ADAC lists 0-100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, 191 km/h (119 mph) and 5.5 l/100 km WLTP (125 g/km CO2) for the 2024-2025 version.
The 4xe combines the 1.3 turbo at the front with a 44 kW (60 PS) electric motor on the rear axle and an 11.4 kWh battery. In 177 kW (240 PS) form it reaches 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds and 199 km/h (124 mph), and covers 36 km on electricity in the WLTP cycle (57 km in the city cycle), according to ADAC. Its WLTP rating is 2.1 l/100 km with a charged battery and 7.3 l/100 km with an empty one.
Trailhawk and four-wheel drive
The Trailhawk was Trail Rated, with Active Drive Low, a 20 mm higher ride, skid plates, red tow hooks and Selec-Terrain modes for Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud and Rock. In Germany it was sold with the 2.0 MultiJet diesel and 125 kW (170 PS) until 2020, then as a 4xe plug-in hybrid. An optional My Sky roof with removable or power-retractable panels was offered.

At 1,684 mm the boxy body is much taller than a SEAT Arona (1,537 mm) or an Audi Q2 (1,508 mm), yet its 351-litre boot is smaller than theirs. Use our size comparison tool to set it against other small SUVs.

Fuel economy and running costs
Among the petrol engines, the 1.0 T-GDI was rated at 6.1 l/100 km on the old NEDC cycle (160 g/km WLTP). The e-Hybrid needs 5.5 l/100 km in WLTP, and the 4xe makes sense only for drivers who charge it daily: with an empty battery ADAC lists 7.3 l/100 km. German list prices ranged from EUR 20,000 for the 1.6 E-torQ at launch in 2014 to EUR 31,100 for the e-Hybrid and EUR 45,700 for the 4xe North Star in 2024-2025 (ADAC).
| Version (Germany) | Power | Price | Year of list |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 E-torQ | 81 kW (110 PS) | EUR 20,000 | 2014 |
| 1.0 T-GDI Sport | 88 kW (120 PS) | EUR 20,700 | 2018 |
| 1.5 e-Hybrid DCT | 96 kW (130 PS) | EUR 31,100 | 2024 |
| 1.3 4xe Trailhawk | 177 kW (240 PS) | EUR 48,200 | 2024 |
European trims were Sport, Longitude, Limited, Trailhawk and later Altitude, Summit, Overland and North Star.
Safety: Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP gave the Renegade five stars in 2014: 87% for adult occupants, 85% for child occupants, 65% for pedestrians and 74% for safety assist. In the December 2019 retest the car fell to three stars (82%, 84%, 55% and 58%), because autonomous emergency braking was optional and therefore not tested. Results for other models are in our safety ratings.

Reliability and known issues
ADAC's model page does not publish breakdown figures for the Renegade, and we have not found a sourced pattern of faults that we could report here.
Sales
European sales peaked at 78,842 in 2019; the Renegade also sold 106,606 cars in the United States in 2016. US sales ended after the 2023 model year. Brazil remains its biggest market, with 44,801 sales in 2025.
