First generation (2006–2016)
A two-door concept called Compass with a 3.7-litre V6 appeared in 2002, but the production car shown at the Detroit show in January 2006 was a five-door compact SUV. The first one was assembled on 30 May 2006 in Belvidere, in the former Dodge Neon plant. The Compass shared the GS platform of DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi with the Patriot; the Patriot had the traditional boxy look, the Compass a hatchback shape similar to the Dodge Caliber.
Engines were the 2.4-litre "World" four-cylinder with 128 kW (172 hp), a 2.0 with 118 kW (158 hp) and, for Europe and Australia, a 2.0 diesel from Volkswagen with 103 kW (140 PS), replaced in 2011 by the Mercedes-Benz 2.2 OM651. Four-wheel drive came as Freedom Drive I or, with the CVT and a 19:1 reduction, Freedom Drive II. The 2011 update made the car look more like the Grand Cherokee, raised the ground clearance by one inch and introduced the Trail Rated badge.
Euro NCAP rated the first Compass in 2012 with two stars: 61 percent for adults, 76 percent for children, 23 percent for pedestrians and 43 percent for safety assistance.

Second generation (2016–2025)
The second Compass was revealed in Brazil on 27 September 2016 and replaced both the old Compass and the Patriot. It uses a stretched version of the Renegade platform and was built in five countries. Engines ranged from the 1.3 GSE turbo petrol and the 1.6 and 2.0 Multijet diesels to US 2.4 Tigershark engines, the 2.0 GME turbo with 149 kW (200 hp) and a plug-in hybrid called 4xe. Four-wheel-drive versions used a ZF nine-speed automatic until 2022.
Trims were Sport, Latitude, Limited and the Trailhawk, which came only with four-wheel drive. A facelift appeared in China in 2020 and in India in January 2021; ADAC lists the European facelift from 2021. Euro NCAP tested the car in 2017 with 90 percent for adults, 83 percent for children, 64 percent for pedestrians and 59 percent for safety assistance.

Third generation (since 2025)
The new Compass was revealed on 5 May 2025. It was designed in Turin under Daniele Calonaci and keeps the seven-slot grille, without chrome. For off-road use Jeep gives 200 mm of ground clearance, a 470 mm wading depth and approach, breakover and departure angles of 20°, 15° and 26°. Inside are a 10-inch digital instrument panel and a 16-inch touchscreen.
| Version (ADAC) | System power | Battery | Gearbox | Drive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 e-Hybrid | 107 kW (145 PS) | 0.9 kWh | 6-speed DCT | front |
| 1.6 PHEV | 165 kW (225 PS) | 17.9 kWh | 7-speed DCT | front |

| Electric 96 kWh 4xe | 276 kW (375 PS) | 96 kWh | single speed | all-wheel |
The e-Hybrid combines a 100 kW (136 PS) 1.2 engine with a 21 kW electric motor. ADAC gives 0–100 km/h in 10.0 seconds, 195 km/h and 5.6 l/100 km WLTP. In the Autonotizen.de test in November 2025 the on-board computer showed 6.8 l/100 km, and the car covered 12 of 125 km without using the petrol engine.
North American production was first planned for Brampton, Ontario, then for Belvidere from December 2027; in August 2026 that plan was reported to be paused for another two years.
