Which C4 Picasso to buy
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For seven seats: a Grand C4 Picasso; the second generation was built until July 2022, so late cars are relatively young.
- For low running costs: a second-generation 1.6 BlueHDi 120 or 2.0 BlueHDi 150, preferably with the EAT6 automatic from 2015 on.
- For a petrol car: the 1.2 PureTech 130 from 2015, with 230 Nm and 115 g/km.
- On a tight budget: a first-generation HDi with a manual gearbox; drive an ETG6 car first if you want two pedals, as it is not a conventional automatic.
The Citroën C4 Picasso is the compact MPV that Citroën built in two generations from 2006 to 2022, each with a five-seat C4 Picasso and a seven-seat Grand C4 Picasso. The first generation (2006-2013) came from Vigo in Spain on the PF2 platform; the second (2013-2022) moved to the lighter EMP2 platform and was renamed C4 SpaceTourer in 2018. Together the two generations reached about 1.6 million cars.
In short
- Two generations: I (2006-2013, PF2) and II (2013-2022, EMP2); five-seat and seven-seat (Grand) versions of each.
- Engines from 68 kW (92 PS) diesels to the 122 kW (165 PS) 1.6 THP; no hybrid or electric version.
- Boot: 500 l in the first-generation five-seater, 537-630 l in the second.
- Euro NCAP: five stars in 2006 and again in 2013.

First generation (2006-2013)
The seven-seat Grand C4 Picasso came first: it was shown at the Paris Motor Show on 30 September 2006 and launched in November 2006. The five-seat C4 Picasso followed in February 2007 and was shown at the Geneva Motor Show that March. Both shared the PF2 platform and engines with the Citroën C4 and Peugeot 307 and were built in Vigo. The Grand C4 Picasso is 4,590 mm long, the five-seater 4,468 mm (ADAC). Production ran until March 2013, with 891,000 cars built.
Second generation (2013-2022)
The second C4 Picasso was previewed by the Technospace concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2013. It moved to the EMP2 platform, shared with the second Peugeot 3008 and 5008, which made it lighter than the first generation. The five-seater is 4,428 mm long on a 2,785 mm wheelbase (ADAC). In early 2018 Citroën renamed the cars C4 SpaceTourer and Grand C4 SpaceTourer. The five-seater left the UK in May 2019 and production ended in mid-2020; the seven-seat Grand C4 SpaceTourer was built until July 2022. In all, 732,000 second-generation cars were made.

Engines, transmissions and performance
First-generation engines
| Engine | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h | Gearbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 VTi 16V | 89 kW (122 PS) | 160 Nm | 12.1 s | 5-speed manual |
| 1.8 16V | 95 kW (129 PS) | 170 Nm | 11.9 s | 5-speed manual |
| 2.0 16V | 107 kW (145 PS) | 199 Nm | 11.5 s | 6-speed ETG6 |
| 1.6 THP | 104-115 kW (142-156 PS) | 240-244 Nm | 10.0-11.5 s | 4-speed automatic or 6-speed ETG6 |
| 1.6 HDi | 80-82 kW (109-112 PS) | 240 Nm | 12.5 s | manual or ETG6 |
| 2.0 HDi | 100-120 kW (135-163 PS) | 270-340 Nm | 12.4 s (103 kW version) | manual, ETG6 or 6-speed automatic |
Figures from Wikipedia and ADAC; the two sources sometimes give slightly different outputs, for example 92 kW for the 1.8 in the ADAC catalogue. The ETG6 (listed by ADAC as EGS6) is a six-speed automated manual. A conventional six-speed automatic came with the most powerful 2.0 HDi.
Second-generation engines
| Engine | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h | Gearbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 PureTech (from 2015) | 96 kW (131 PS) | 230 Nm | 10.1-11.2 s | 6-speed manual |
| 1.6 THP (2013-2015) | 115-116 kW (156-157 PS) | - | 9.0 s | 6-speed manual |
| 1.6 THP | 122 kW (165 PS) | 240 Nm | 8.4 s | 6-speed EAT6 automatic |
| 1.6 BlueHDi (from 2015) | 74-88 kW (100-120 PS) | 254-300 Nm | 11.2-12.7 s | manual or EAT6 |
| 2.0 BlueHDi (from 2013) | 110 kW (150 PS) | 370 Nm | 9.7 s | 6-speed manual or EAT6 |
At launch the second generation still used the ETG6. From 2015 the six-speed EAT6 torque-converter automatic, supplied by Aisin, replaced it, and in early 2018 an eight-speed automatic replaced the EAT6. ADAC lists the 1.2 PureTech 130 at 201 km/h. The power converter translates PS and kW if you compare with older brochures.

Dimensions, space and boot
| Parameter | C4 Picasso I (5 seats) | C4 Picasso II (5 seats) |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,468 mm (175.9 in) | 4,428 mm (174.3 in) |
| Width | 1,831 mm (72.1 in) | 1,826 mm (71.9 in) |
| Height | 1,665 mm (65.6 in) | 1,610 mm (63.4 in) |
| Wheelbase | 2,728 mm (107.4 in) | 2,785 mm (109.6 in) |
| Kerb weight | 1,564 kg (HDi 110) | 1,355 kg (PureTech 130) |
| Boot | 500 l (17.7 cu ft) | 537-630 l (19.0-22.2 cu ft) |
| Boot, seats folded | 1,734 l (ADAC); 1,951 l (Wikipedia) | - |
| Fuel tank | 60 l | 57 l |
The second generation is shorter than the first but has a longer wheelbase and a bigger boot. Its three individual rear seats slide, and the front passenger seat folds flat to carry loads up to 2.5 m long. The weight figures show what the EMP2 platform saved, although the two cars compared have different engines.
Fuel economy and running costs
ADAC lists 5.9 l/100 km (NEDC) and 155 g/km of CO2 for the first-generation HDi 110, and 5.0 l/100 km and 115 g/km for the second-generation 1.2 PureTech 130. With the fuel cost calculator you can turn those numbers into a monthly cost.
German list prices, according to ADAC: the first-generation five-seater cost from EUR 21,000 (1.8 16V Advance, 2007) to EUR 37,690 (HDi 135 Lounge EGS6, 2008). The second generation ranged from EUR 20,190 (VTi 120 Attraction, 2013) to EUR 35,890 (BlueHDi 150 Exclusive EAT6, 2014-2016).
Trims and equipment
German trims for the first generation were Advance, Style, Confort, Tendance, Exclusive and, briefly, Lounge; the second generation used Attraction, Seduction, Intensive, Selection and Exclusive. The Lounge was the most expensive first-generation version in Germany, at EUR 37,690 for the HDi 135 EGS6 in 2008. Automatic and ETG6 versions were listed at extra cost over the equivalent manual car.
Safety
| Test | Generation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Euro NCAP 2006 | I | five stars; adult 35, child 34, pedestrian 16 points |
| Euro NCAP 2009 (retest) | I | adult 87%, child 78%, pedestrian 46%, safety assist 89% |

| Euro NCAP 2013 | II | five stars; adult 86%, child 88%, pedestrian 68%, safety assist 81% |
| ANCAP 2014 | II | frontal offset 13.53/16, side 16/16 |
Both generations earned the top Euro NCAP rating of their time. The safety section explains how the tests have tightened since.

Reliability and known issues
We have no sourced data on recurring faults for either generation, so none are listed here. Buyers should know which gearbox they are getting: the ETG6 of the first generation and early second-generation cars is an automated manual, while the EAT6 used from 2015 is a conventional automatic with a torque converter. Check the service history and test-drive the gearbox you are buying.
Rivals
The C4 Picasso's main rivals were other compact MPVs, among them the Renault Scénic and Grand Scénic, Volkswagen Touran, Ford C-Max and Grand C-Max, Opel Zafira, and later the Peugeot 5008 on the same EMP2 platform.
