Which MiTo to buy: verdict

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • Most fun: the 125 kW (170 PS) Quadrifoglio Verde or Veloce with the 1.4 TB MultiAir; 7.4 s to 100 km/h.
  • Cheapest to run: the 1.3 JTDM 95, with 3.4 l/100 km NEDC.
  • Best balance: a 1.4 TB MultiAir with 99-103 kW (135-140 PS), ideally with the TCT gearbox.
  • Avoid if possible: the 57 kW (78 PS) 1.4, which needs 13 seconds to 100 km/h.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo is a three-door supermini that Alfa Romeo built at Mirafiori in Turin from 2008 to 2018. It shares its underpinnings with the Fiat Grande Punto, was offered with engines from a 0.9 TwinAir two-cylinder to a 125 kW (170 PS) 1.4 MultiAir turbo, and every version has Alfa Romeo's DNA driving mode switch. Mirafiori built 293,408 MiTos in eleven years.

In short

  • B-segment three-door hatchback (type 955), 4,063 mm long, built at Mirafiori, Turin, 2008-2018.
  • Engines from 57 kW (78 PS) 1.4 to 125 kW (170 PS) 1.4 TB MultiAir; diesels 1.3 and 1.6 JTDM.
  • Euro NCAP five stars (2008); seven airbags standard.
  • Facelifts in 2013 and 2016; no direct successor.

The name combines Milan, where the car was designed, and Torino, where it was built. The MiTo was Alfa Romeo's smallest model of the period and sat below the 147 and later the Giulietta in the Alfa Romeo line-up.

Generations and model history

The MiTo was presented at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan in 2008 and introduced internationally at the British Motor Show the same year. There was only one generation, updated twice; ADAC lists three phases:

Generation Code Years Body styles Engines Power (kW / hp)
MiTo 955 2008-2013 3-door hatchback 1.4 petrol, 1.4 TB, 1.4 MultiAir, 1.3/1.6 JTDM 57-125 kW (78-170 PS)
MiTo (1st facelift) 955 2013-2016 3-door hatchback adds 0.9 TwinAir 57-125 kW (78-170 PS)
MiTo (2nd facelift) 955 2016-2018 3-door hatchback 1.4, 0.9 TwinAir, 1.4 MultiAir, 1.3 JTDM 57-125 kW (78-170 PS)

The 2014 model year update brought a new TwinAir engine, a revised interior and the Uconnect 5.0 infotainment system. The 2016 facelift, shown at Geneva, reworked the front end and simplified the trims to MiTo, Super and Veloce. Production ended in 2018; ADAC lists the last versions until August 2018, and the remaining cars were sold into 2019.

Limited editions included the Quadrifoglio Verde (Frankfurt 2009), a Belgium-only Edizione Sprint of 250 cars, a Maserati version of 100 cars (2010), the Quadrifoglio Verde 101 (2012, 101 cars), the MiTo SBK (2012, 200 numbered cars) and the MiTo Racer (Geneva 2015).

Engine data from Wikipedia and ADAC; years are approximate as markets differed, and "-" means no date in our sources. Gearboxes were a five- or six-speed manual or, from 2010, the six-speed TCT dual-clutch automatic, which Alfa Romeo unveiled at that year's Geneva show. The TCT can handle up to 350 Nm. An LPG version of the 1.4 turbo with 88 kW (120 PS) was also sold.

ADAC figures for the final models: the 1.4 TB MultiAir Veloce TCT reached 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and 219 km/h; the 57 kW (78 PS) 1.4 took 13.0 seconds and reached 165 km/h. The TwinAir 105 managed 11.4 seconds and 184 km/h.

Alfa DNA

Every MiTo has the Alfa DNA selector with Dynamic, Normal and All-weather settings. It changes engine response, steering, brakes and, on cars with the TCT, gearbox behaviour.

Dimensions, space and boot

Parameter Metric Imperial
Length 4,063 mm 160.0 in
Width (without mirrors) 1,720 mm 67.7 in
Height 1,446 mm 56.9 in
Wheelbase 2,511 mm 98.9 in

Fuel tank 45 l 11.9 US gal

ADAC lists 270 litres of boot space for the 2016 cars; Wikipedia gives 250 litres. Either way it is a little smaller than most five-door superminis. Only a three-door body was ever made.

Fuel economy and running costs

Official NEDC figures from ADAC for 2016-2018 models:

Version Combined CO2
1.3 JTDM 95 3.4 l/100 km 89 g/km
0.9 TwinAir 105 4.2 l/100 km 99 g/km
1.4 TB MultiAir 170 TCT 5.4 l/100 km 124 g/km
1.4 8V 78 5.6 l/100 km 130 g/km

NEDC values were measured in a gentle laboratory cycle and are lower than the later WLTP figures; expect real-world consumption to be higher. Our fuel cost calculator helps estimate the difference.

Trims and prices

German list prices for the last versions (ADAC, 2016): the 1.4 8V started at EUR 15,700, the TwinAir Super at EUR 18,100, the 1.3 JTDM at EUR 18,900 and the 1.4 TB MultiAir Veloce TCT at EUR 24,000. A Veloce S was added in 2018 at EUR 26,900, and simplified Urban models from March 2018 began at EUR 15,500.

Safety: Euro NCAP

Euro NCAP tested the MiTo in 2008 and gave it five stars for adult occupant protection, with 36 points. Seven airbags were standard. ANCAP also rated it in 2009. The rating is now old; Euro NCAP tests have become much stricter since. Newer results are in our safety section.

Production peaked in 2009 with 65,342 cars and fell steadily afterwards:
