All specs

The Perodua Myvi is a small five-door hatchback built in Rawang, Malaysia, since May 2005 and the country's best-selling car for most of the years since 2006. Three generations have followed: the first two were based on the Daihatsu Boon, while the third, launched on 16 November 2017, was designed by Perodua itself with Toyota engines of 1.3 and 1.5 litres. By the end of 2024 about 1.487 million Myvis had been sold, and the car is also sold in Indonesia as the Daihatsu Sirion.

Perodua, short for Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sendirian Berhad, was founded in 1993. Its first model, the Kancil, went on sale in August 1994. Perodua does not design its own engines and gearboxes and has long used Daihatsu components; its largest shareholders are UMW Holdings with 38 % and Daihatsu, which holds 20 % directly and 5 % through Daihatsu (Malaysia). The head office is in Sungai Choh, Rawang, Selangor. Perodua is Malaysia's largest car maker, ahead of Proton: in 2016 it sold more than 207,100 vehicles, a record domestic share of 35.7 %. Its range today includes the Axia, Bezza, Alza, Aruz, Ativa, the Traz and the electric QV-E. The background of its technical partner is in the history of Daihatsu.

First generation (2005–2011)

The first Myvi was launched in Malaysia on 25 May 2005. It was derived from the first-generation Daihatsu Boon, also sold as the Daihatsu Sirion and related to the Toyota Passo. Perodua assembled it in Rawang and built its engines at its Serendah plant.

1.0 EJ-VE (989 cc, three-cylinder) 43 kW (58.5 PS) 88 Nm 13.5 s 160 km/h

Gearboxes were a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. Sales rose from 34,050 in 2005 to 90,594 in 2009. The car was also sold in the United Kingdom, where it was the last Perodua on sale before the brand left in 2013, and in Indonesia as the Daihatsu Sirion from April 2007.

Second generation (2011–2017)

The second Myvi arrived on 16 June 2011. It was based on the 2010 Japanese-market Daihatsu Boon, with its own body, interior and engines. The 1.3-litre K3-VE gave 67 kW (90 hp) and 117 Nm, while a new 1.5-litre 3SZ-VE, imported from Daihatsu's plant in Karawang, Indonesia, gave 76 kW (102 hp) and 136 Nm. There was still no CVT.

ASEAN NCAP tested the car in 2012 and gave 8.71 points for adult protection and 54 % for child occupants. After the facelift of 15 January 2015 the result improved to 11.55 points and 71 %, and Perodua claimed a four-star rating. ABS and EBD were fitted to the 1.3-litre Premium and Elegance and to all 1.5-litre versions.

Third generation (since 2017)

The third Myvi, development code D20N, was the first designed fully by Perodua rather than adapted from a Daihatsu Boon; Toyota gave advice and supplied the engines. Bookings opened on 8 November 2017, the public saw the car at the MAEPS exhibition on 9–12 November, and the launch followed on 16 November 2017.

Engine Displacement Power Torque Gearbox (2017–2021)
1NR-VE 1,329 cc 70 kW (95 PS) 121 Nm at 4,000 rpm 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic
2NR-VE 1,496 cc 76 kW (103 PS) 137 Nm at 4,200 rpm 4-speed automatic

Demand was immediate. About 1,000 cars were delivered in the first week, 11,000 by January 2018 and 100,000 by February 2019. Sales reached 81,964 in 2019, 66,328 in 2020 and about 47,520 in 2021. In ASEAN NCAP's 2017 test the car scored 45.43 points for adult protection, 22.01 for child protection and 20.83 for safety assist.

The 2021 facelift

The updated third-generation Myvi was launched on 18 November 2021. The five-speed manual was dropped because only about 1 % of buyers chose it, and the four-speed automatic was replaced by a D-CVT for both engines. Perodua claims 5 % lower fuel consumption and 20 % faster acceleration to 100 km/h.

Perodua Smart Drive Assist (PSDA, also called ASA 3.0) is standard on all versions except the base 1.3 G, where it is optional. The top 1.5 AV adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning with lane-keeping help. The facelift range consists of the 1.3 G, the 1.3 G with PSDA, the 1.5 X, the 1.5 H and the 1.5 AV. In Indonesia the facelifted Sirion followed on 2 June 2022, as the 1.3 X and 1.3 R, both with CVT.

Exports

The Myvi has been exported mainly in the region. Indonesia takes it as the Daihatsu Sirion, which in 2020 made up 55 % of Perodua's exports. The third generation reached Singapore in April 2019, Mauritius in August 2019 and Brunei in July 2020. The first generation was sold in the UK and Guernsey. Malaysian prices are in ringgit, so no EUR price is given here.

Who the Myvi suits

The Myvi is a practical small car for city and suburban driving, with five doors, small Toyota engines and, since 2021, a CVT and driver-assistance package on most versions. Perodua has withdrawn from the UK and Malta, so the Myvi is not offered in Europe today. In Europe comparable small hatchbacks are listed under the best small city cars. The power converter turns the kW and hp figures above into PS, Perodua's models are in the Perodua catalogue, and the Daihatsu cars it is based on are in the Daihatsu catalogue.
