Which Jaecoo 7 to choose and its rivals
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
Where both are sold, the choice depends on charging. The SHS plug-in hybrid suits drivers who can charge at home: it covers about 90 km on electricity and has more than twice the system torque of the petrol version. The 1.6 TGDI is simpler and is the only version with all-wheel drive, which matters for buyers on rough roads or in snow.
In its class the Jaecoo 7 competes with established compact SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Kia Sportage, and with plug-in hybrids such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Its sister model from the same group is the Omoda 5.
The Jaecoo 7, called J7 in many markets, is a compact SUV that Chery has built since 2023 and sells outside China under its Jaecoo brand. Europe receives it with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, optionally with all-wheel drive, and as the SHS plug-in hybrid with a combined 255 kW and about 90 km of electric range. In China the same car is sold as the Chery Tansuo 06, Fulwin T6 and Tiggo 7 High Energy.
Jaecoo is an SUV brand of Chery Automobile, created in April 2023 in Wuhu for export markets. The name combines the German word "Jäger" (hunter) with the English "cool". Like its sister brand Omoda, Jaecoo is not sold in China. Malaysia was the first market at the end of 2023, followed by Thailand, Italy and Spain in 2024 and the UK, where the J7 became orderable in January 2025. Together Omoda and Jaecoo passed one million sales by April 2026, and the UK registered 28,232 new Jaecoos in 2025.

From TJ-1 prototype to export SUV
Chery showed the car as the TJ-1 C-DM prototype at Auto Shanghai in 2023, and the Tansuo 06 went on sale in China in August 2023. For export it became the first Jaecoo. Launches followed in quick succession: Mexico and South Africa in the first half of 2024, Malaysia and New Zealand in July 2024, and Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia in January 2025. Australia priced the car in March 2025, and Brazil received only the PHEV in April 2025.
In the UK the J7 was the first of five Jaecoo models planned for 2025, offered as the 1.6 petrol with optional all-wheel drive and as the SHS plug-in hybrid. The warranty there runs for seven years or 160,000 km. The car's maker is portrayed in the history of Chery.

One car, several names
Chery sells the same car under several names. In China the petrol car is the Chery Tansuo 06, the plug-in hybrid is sold as the Fulwin T6, and since 2024 the car has also been offered there as the Tiggo 7 High Energy. Export markets know it as the Jaecoo 7 or J7. Specifications differ by market: the version launched in Pakistan on 21 October 2025, for example, has a 105 kW (143 PS) petrol engine, an 18.3 kWh LFP battery and 106 km of electric range on the NEDC cycle.
Sales figures by market are scattered. Malaysia, the first export market, registered 7,041 Jaecoo 7s in 2024, and more than 1,500 plug-in hybrids had been sold there by August 2025.
Engines and the SHS plug-in hybrid
| Version | Engine | Electric motor | System output | Torque | Gearbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 TGDI | 1.6-litre turbo, 145 kW (197 PS) | - | 145 kW (197 PS) | 290 Nm | seven-speed dual-clutch |
| SHS PHEV | 1.5-litre turbo, 115 kW (156 PS), 220 Nm | 150 kW (204 PS) | 255 kW (347 PS) | 525 Nm | dedicated hybrid transmission |
The petrol version drives the front wheels, with all-wheel drive as an option. The plug-in hybrid, called SHS for export and C-DM in China, is front-wheel drive only. Wikipedia EN gives 88 km of WLTP electric range for the SHS and 90 km for the UK version; under the more generous Chinese rating the car reaches 120 km on electricity and more than 1,400 km in total.
For the German PHEV the ADAC catalogue lists 205 kW (279 PS) rather than the 255 kW in Wikipedia EN, so buyers should check the homologated figure for their market. How much the hybrid saves depends on how often it is charged; the fuel cost calculator helps estimate the difference against a petrol car.

Interior and technology
The dashboard is built around a 14.8-inch touchscreen, with a head-up display and a wireless charging pad. There are very few physical buttons, and the interior uses a black-and-white colour scheme. The infotainment runs on a Qualcomm 8155 chip with over-the-air updates, facial recognition and level 2+ driver assistance. Wikipedia EN does not give boot volume, width, height or weight, so these are not listed here.

Safety: Euro NCAP 2025
Euro NCAP tested the Jaecoo 7 PHEV in 2025 and published the result on 9 April 2025: five stars. The assessment covered frontal and side impacts, the pole test, whiplash, rescue information, occupant monitoring and automatic emergency braking for cars, pedestrians and cyclists. The percentages for each area are in Euro NCAP's datasheet, which was not available in the sources used here.
Prices in Germany

| 1.5 TGDI PHEV Exclusive DHT | 205 kW (279 PS) | petrol / electric | €39,490 |
The ADAC catalogue lists only these two plug-in hybrid versions for Germany, both from January 2026. The 1.6 petrol does not appear in the German list.
