Renault Fluence
Renault Fluence is a golf saloon (although it is located somewhere between the C- and D-class) with a front-drive configuration. The French car has an attractive appearance, reliable technical stuffing and a high level of practicality.
When Renault created this model, it focused on middle-aged family men, who already have families and children, and also appreciate the high level of safety, equipment and comfort in their car. The whole model range is Renault.

Car history
Initially, in 2004, the whole world was officially demonstrated a conceptual version of the car, which resembled little more than a modern car. For the first time the serial car debuted in 2009 during the Frankfurt Motor Show. Then the model was designed to replace the 3-volume Megan. The last time the French sedan was updated in 2015, although the word “updated” is too loud.
The changes were minor and affected only the appearance and equipment list. In 2016, Renault Fluence left the European market and gave way to Megan. But Fluence was able to continue its existence in some Asian and Latin American countries (where the model is in high demand).
Renault Fluence (2009-2012)
During the international car show in Frankfurt in the autumn of 2009, the French, represented by the Renault Company, presented a compact version of a sedan called Fluence. The car was able to replace the three-volume model Megan of the second generation.
After the official presentation, the novelty stood on the assembly line of the Turkish company in Bursa. In the spring of 2010, the French-made car began to develop the Russian market. The four-door car was produced invariably until 2013, after which it underwent modernization.
From the outside Renault Fluence 2009 is equipped with a calm and serene appearance. It will not be possible to find any elements of evocative content in its exterior. The design of the French sedan is solid and balanced. The back part has lanterns-emeralds, executed rather stylishly, and also relief bumpers.
As for the side part, the car is equipped with a proportional profile, which received “puffy” sides. Also, there are descending outlines of the roof, which look very nice. However, the front part, which has received an oval optics and a narrow slot of the grille is not so interesting because of the lack of spectacular details.
The bottom of the bumper is fitted with round fog lights on the sides. The height of the road clearance is not bad: 160-165 millimeters. As for the inner part of Renault Fluence 1, everything looks beautiful and of high quality. Inside there is a feeling of favorable environment. The salon looks like a European sedan. It is necessary to note ideal fitting of details and qualitative finishing materials.
The French car Renault Fluence 1 has no difficulties with ergonomics. A convenient three-spoke steering wheel is installed in front of the driver, as well as a model-informative dashboard, which is represented by 3 “sockets”. It is worth mentioning a rather massive central console, where under the visor there is a display of “board computer”, as well as separate control units “music” and “climate”.
The top versions of this machine are equipped with a colour display of the multimedia centre on top of the torpedo. There is plenty of room inside the Renault Fluence 2012, even if the passengers are tall. The doors open at a wide angle, making boarding/disembarkation easy. The front seats are well profiled and have a wide range of settings.
Unfortunately, the seats have almost no side support, which is very lacking. On the rear sofa, the Renault engineers are also well thought-out. Three adult passengers can sit, but a large transmission tunnel will interfere with the center of the seat.
The 1st generation Renault Fluence has a very large luggage compartment with a capacity of 530 litres. If necessary, this figure is increased by folding the backrest. However, a flat floor is still not possible. The section underneath the raised floor has a normal spare wheel and the right tools.
Technical part
For Russians, the Renault Fluence 1 was offered with 2 gasoline-powered engines. The basic engine was a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder, atmospheric engine, which received a distributed power supply system, as well as a 16-valve gas distribution mechanism.
It develops such a variant of 110 “horses” (145 Nm). This engine works together with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox. Such technical elements allow the machine to reach a speed mark of 100 kilometers per hour in 11.9-13.9 seconds.
The maximum speed of the vehicle is 180-183 kilometers per hour. It consumes 1.6-liter “atmosphere” of about 6.8-7.5 liters of gasoline in a combined cycle.
The top engine is a four-cylinder, atmospheric 2.0-liter engine. It also received a sixteen-valve gas distribution mechanism and multipoint injection system. This engine produces 138 horsepower (190 Nm). This torque is transmitted to the front wheels by a 6-speed manual gearbox or stepless variable speed gearbox CVT.
To accelerate to the first hundred Renault Fluence 1 with such an engine will take 9.9-10.1 seconds. The maximum speed is 195-200 kilometers per hour. It consumes such “engine” 7.8-8 liters for each hundred kilometers.
As a Renault Fluence base, it is based on a platform from the 3rd Megan, which provides for the transverse arrangement of the powertrain. The front wheels are equipped with an independent suspension type McPherson, which has lower levers of 3-angle shape. Rear wheels have a semi-independent design with a torsion beam.
The large enough sedan is controlled well thanks to the steering device “pinion-rail”. Also the electric amplifier is provided. The braking system in Renault Fluence 2009 is equipped with disc brakes (venting is supported at the front) on all wheels.
In addition, French experts have provided for the introduction of a list of modern electronic systems, such as ABS, ESP and so on. Purchase pre-reform, supported by Renault Fluence as of spring 2016, you can buy from $4 534 to $ 9 068. Among the advantages of the French sedan is a good equipment, even the basic one. In this form, the car was produced until 2012, after which, in the same year, the car was updated, which allowed it to hold on for some time in the world market. Fluence Restyling (2013-2016)
During the Istanbul Motor Show, which took place in November 2012, the French company Renault officially presented an updated version of Renault Fluence 2013.
The sedan has been decided to release in order to maintain the trend of the automotive industry and in order to preserve the valuable potential buyers. But this update can not be called a single one, as in 2015 the company decided to make facelift its sedan, but this was not officially announced.
Exterior
Updated French model Renault Fluence 2 is equipped with a new design, smooth forms, which we have already seen on the prerestyling version. However, in the new Renault Fluence 2016 there is a slight aggression. The front of the Fluence has solid side reliefs on the hood.
Renault engineers decided to install narrow headlamps, which are made in the form of the same narrow petal. Xenon filling was placed inside the headlamps, which is installed only as a separate option. Inside there is a lens. Between the headlamps you can see a very narrow grille, which has a chrome-plated decorative line in the center.
This line is intertwined with the company’s bigger nameplate. The front bumper is massive and smooth. Its lower part is equipped with a quadrangular extension of the radiator grille. On the sides there are “foggers” of round shape.
And above them the specialists placed daytime running lights with LED filling. All of these elements have a chrome trim, which looks great from Renault Fluence’s photo.
Renault Fluence has been redesigned and designed by former Mazda designer Laurence van den Acker. With the new stylistics of the car, it can be seen and recognized from afar.
The side of the upgraded Renault Fluence 2013 is made up of solid moldings painted in body colour. The wheel arches are slightly inflated and beveled. They contain 16-inch wheels as standard. As a separate option, you can install 17-inch “rollers”.
As for the small body line at the top, it looks stylish. Complementing the whole picture is a small form of turn signal repeater mounted on the outer side mirror. The height of the ground clearance is 145 millimeters. It has imposed some restrictions when trying to overcome the borders and driving on the country road.
But Russian buyers can count on increased ground clearance up to 160 millimeters. The dynamic profile of the updated Renault Fluence 2019 has preserved the proportions of the previous model and continues to attract the eye with its spectacular dome roof, high window line, massive side doors and stylish light-alloy “rollers”, which received a new design.
It’s nice to see that Renault Fluence 2015 is now equipped with some options that were previously optional.
The back part received unusual lanterns, narrowly shaped. They are angular and rounded in some places. Halogen lamps are used as stuffing. The luggage compartment lid at the top has a so-called nose of a duck, the purpose of which is to create a spoiler, albeit of a small size.
The rear bumper is also massive and is equipped with a recessed line, which received reflectors on the sides. The lower part received plastic protection, under which a small branch pipe of the exhaust system was installed. Renault Fluence 2 has been updated to add two more options to the 11 existing body colours – coffee and ivory.
Interior
Despite the fact that the inner part was not radically changed, in our article we will try to describe it in detail. The car has plenty of space for both front and back passengers. However, the seats themselves could have been much better.
In front of us, the French engineers installed simple armchairs, which were covered with fabric and white stitching. In addition, they are equipped with heating and height adjustment functions. The upper part of the torpedo has a soft and pleasant to the touch plastic. There are no crickets, creaks or other extraneous sounds.
Interesting! To start a Renault Fluence car you just need to press a button, and the key card can just lie there.
On the back row there is a sofa with an armrest, which is equipped with 3 headrests. These headrests can be adjusted in height. Interestingly, some versions received leather headrests. The rear window has a curtain for privacy, which can be used if necessary.
The driver is presented with a large steering wheel, which has received a leather trim, which has too large an overlay of airbags. It doesn’t look very nice. The steering wheel itself is equipped with 4 buttons to control the music system. The “board” of devices has decided to execute in style of motorcycles.
Interestingly, there was a time when many people criticized the same Chevrolet Aveo solution, but in this case it was to everyone’s liking. French specialists in the updated Renault Fluence used a round-shaped display, which received a chrome edging. On the right side, there was room for a small “board computer”. The round screen displays the current speed mode as well as the fuel level and oil temperature. The left side is equipped with a massive analogue engine rotation sensor.
Interestingly, all the windows on the Renault Fluence 2019 are pulsed and illuminated.
The central torpedo is equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen display of the multimedia center. It is well inserted and looks succinct. However, it has a problem that concerns its location. It is very uncomfortable to reach the screen and control it. The upgraded car is available popular system R-Link, going to Renault Fluence optional.
It’s nice that the set includes the popular TomTom navigation system in a number of European countries. As time has shown, such a system in Russia is also well oriented. In addition, the novelty has an improved stereo system and the ability to view photos and video products.
Only in European countries the system was taught to surf the Internet, and Russians R-Link is available only offline. Below the display engineers have installed climate system deflectors. After the glossy insertion you can notice a block of separate “climate”. This unit is equipped with a simple small monitor and a bunch of buttons.
Underneath it there are a few buttons to help you control your music system. In addition, there is a CD slot. At the bottom there is a place for the engine start button. On the right side there is a cigarette lighter, and in the center there is a place for the phone.
For the most demanding drivers, Renault engineers have installed a dimmer control for the backlight, which allows everyone to adjust it to their personal preferences or turn it off
The tunnel is equipped with a cup holder designed for an ashtray or glass. Then you can see the gearbox handle, behind which the parking brake key and 2 real cup holders are located. The whole picture is completed by a not so convenient, but huge armrest. On the back row of the passenger sitting in the center will be uncomfortable because of the placed central tunnel.
The backrests of the rear seats are equipped with magazine pockets or various trifles. Front and rear doors have garbage compartments, gloves, etc. However, the width of these pockets is small, so a 1.5 liter bottle does not fit in there. On the second row below the climate system deflectors the engineers installed an additional 12-volt socket.
It turns out that not only the front seats can charge your phone or tablet on the road in the updated Renault Fluence. The luggage compartment has a solid volume of 530 litres. The back of the sofa is folding and allows you to increase the volume of useful space by almost 2 times, but there will be no flat ground.
As standard, the rear seats are folded in a 1/1 ratio, and in all other equipment – 2/3. A trapezoidal lintel is placed between the luggage compartment and the passenger compartment, which slightly impairs functionality. The underground niche has a full spare wheel.
Specifications
Powertrain
The updated “Frenchman” is equipped with three gasoline four-cylinder engines. The initial engine is a 1.6-liter power plant equipped with a distributed injection system and 16-valve gas distribution mechanism. This variant develops 106 horsepower (145 Nm). Consumption of this option is about 6.7 liters of gasoline in a combined mode.
Next comes the “Nissan’s” version of the HR16DE engine with a similar working volume, which has a block of cylinders made of aluminum. This unit received chain drive 16-valve gas distribution mechanism, distributed injection system and variable gas distribution phases. Gives such “engine” 114 “horses” (155 Nm). Consumption of gasoline for every 100 kilometers in a mixed cycle is 6.6 liters.
The top engine is considered to be a 2.0-liter power plant, which also received a sixteen-valve gas distribution mechanism and has a multipoint power supply system. The output of this engine was 138 horsepower (190 Nm). The increased capacity is reflected in the consumption – 7.8 liters in combined mode for every 100 kilometers.
Transmission
Absolutely all motors are synchronized only with the front wheel drive. For the 1.6-liter version, a 5-speed manual transmission is provided. Maximum speed does not exceed 183 kilometers per hour, and acceleration from zero to 100 km/h takes 11.7 seconds.
“The Nissanovskiy 1.6-liter power pack can be operated with the X-Tronic variator. With such a box, this unit accelerates no more than 175 kilometers per hour, and the first hundred is given in 11.9 seconds. The top 2.0-liter engine also runs together with the variator. The 138hp engine is the strongest, so it accelerates the updated Renault Fluence from scratch to 100 kilometers per hour in 10.1 seconds. The maximum speed does not exceed 195 kilometres per hour.
Running gear
The restyled version of Renault Fluence is based on a platform from Megane, which includes a front-drive structure and a transversely oriented powertrain. Looking at the technical characteristics of Renault Fluence, you know that the French sedan suspension is good. The front wheels have independent McPherson tines, and the rear semi-independent torsion beam.
The car is steering confidently thanks to the rack and pinion steering mechanism, which is complemented by electric power steering. Brake system provides disc brakes on all wheels (front ventilated), supporting electronic systems ABS, EBD and others.
The steering rods can walk 100,000 kilometers, and the tips are much longer! Specialists also note the good work and reliability of the braking system.
The machine is still soft and drawn on the road. Renault Fluence 2 feels its best on the quality asphalt, but there will be no suspension breaks, hard knocks or jumps on the broken road. Just a slight rocking, no more.
The suspension of the “Frenchman” turned out to be soft, during the corners of the rolls are not too big and therefore do not bother, but the car acquires a decent amplitude of movement on the pits vertically. On this basis, the chances of hitting the bottom of the ground is quite real, especially when the car is loaded.
Safety
French cars have always been known for their high level of safety, so Renault Fluence is also no exception in terms of safety. So, the updated sedan received:

As the French sedan is a modern car, it is manufactured using modern high-strength steel. The body is complemented by special areas of programmable deformation, which contribute to the reduction of impact energy during the accident.
Especially worth mentioning is the energy-intensive and assembled suspension, which provides a high level of comfort and excellent controllability, even in difficult road situations. Judging by the data received in crash-tests of the European independent organization Euro NCAP in 2011 (prerestyling car), the car has earned 4 stars out of 5 maximum. Therefore, the sedan can be safely recommended even to family people.

For Russians, Renault Fluence 2016 is available in Authentique, Confort, Limited Edition and Expression versions. Already for $ 13 147 (the price at the time indicated) the car was equipped:

Electrical version of Renault Fluence Z.E.
In November 2009 during the Frankfurt Motor Show the French showed the world the electric variant of the small Fluence sedan, which received the prefix Z.E. to the name (Z.E. stands for Zero Emission). The European market started selling the environmentally friendly new product in the autumn of 2011. Sales ended in 2013 due to low demand.
However, serial production lasted until the beginning of 2014. Created by the French department of engineers, the electric car has a stylish design with modern solutions that allow saving on charging and maintenance. These solutions provide the highest possible level of reliability, as well as increasing the level of comfort during the operation of the vehicle. The car turns out to be more male than the Nissan Leaf electric car.
The Renault Fluence Z.E. electric car is distinguished from the “standard” model not bad. Ahead of the electric version has a larger radiator grille, which resembles a rectangle in its shape, as well as the cast blue headlights. The rear part has completely different lanterns, as well as an elongated 13 cm overhang. From the right and left side on the front fender there is a round charging hatch Renault Fluence Z.E. The exhaust pipe has been removed because of the need to do so.
Otherwise, the car looks the same as the standard version. To reduce electrical energy consumption, the Renault Fluence electric tires have a low rolling resistance coefficient and a special design of the “rollers”. This includes the function of heating or cooling the machine when it is being charged. This prevents the battery from discharging prematurely. The basic variant provides installation of the conditioner, entertainment system R-Link, navigation system Tom-Tom and other online applications.
The most expensive version has an air ionizer with an aromatizer and a charcoal filter, applications that allow you to remotely monitor the condition of the electric machine, as well as to control some of its functions. As far as finishing materials are concerned, they stand out for their quality and correspond to cars with internal combustion engines, so there is no discrimination of any kind.
It is also nice that the basic version received light sensors, rain sensors, 2-zone climate control system. Optionally, you can buy a Russified navigation system that supports Bluetooth. I was pleased with a massive, deep glove compartment. If to compare “usual” Fluence with electric Renault Fluence Z.E. which volume is equal to 530 litres, the electric car has received only 300 litres of useful volume. This is even after the rear overhang has been increased by 13 centimetres.
It’s all the fault of the 250-kilogram lithium-ion battery, which takes up everything else. It is clear that the luggage compartment is small, but that’s not all: the center of gravity is raised. However, this makes it possible to quickly replace the battery pack. The robot only needs to unscrew the 4 bolts to replace the battery. This will take no more than 3 minutes.
Due to the battery installed in the luggage compartment, it is not possible to remove the backrests of the rear seats or to transport long loads. However, it is important that the French specialists managed to save space for people sitting behind.
Technical part of Z.E.
Where an ordinary car has an internal combustion engine, the Renault Fluence Z.E. has a 95 hp AC synchronous electric motor with a torque of 226 Nm. Together with it works single-stage transmission with the main gear. Provides power to the 95 hp lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 22 kWh. Such a sedan accelerates to a speed mark of 100 kilometers per hour in 13.4 seconds. The maximum speed does not exceed 135 kilometers per hour.
One charge is enough for an average of 185 kilometers. To fully charge the battery from the home network will take 6-8 hours. With the help of special systems of 3-phase industrial network such time is reduced to 20 minutes. In the running gear, the electric Renault Fluence fully replicates the basic version.
European buyers bought an electric car from 21 300 euros, but the car was not intended for Russians officially. The basic version of the Renault Fluence Z.E. 2014 was equipped with six airbags, multimedia complex R-Link, audio system, 2-zone climate control, power windows on all doors, “cruise”. There were also electronic systems ABS, ESP and others.
In general, the electric car is an excellent option for the city, both for short trips and for driving outside the city. Renault Fluence with electric motor is a full-fledged sedan. Inside there is enough free space, despite the installation of a heavy and not small battery. The French have not forgotten about the comfortable fit, excellent fabric, as well as high quality facing plastic. However, it is upsetting that the car does not have a heated steering wheel.
The “sports” version of GT
During the International Motor Show, which took place in Brazil (São Paulo) in November 2013, the RenaultSport sports division presented a “heated” version of the compact sedan Fluence, which received the prefix “GT” to the name. Among the distinctive features of the sports version of Fluence is a new bodywork, “skating rinks”, which received a stylish design, as well as a sporty customized suspension.
In addition, Renault Fluence GT is equipped with a rich basic equipment, which is not available for all cars sold on the Brazilian and Argentinean market. From the outside, the “Frenchman”, oriented to the South American market, has a sports dodger, which has a splitter of the front bumper, side plates on the doors and thresholds, modified rear bumper with a lower insert, as well as a narrow spoiler on the luggage cover.
Additional accessories that emphasize the individuality and sporty nature of the new version of the French model include stylish external side mirrors made of metal, the same door handles, as well as 17-inch “rollers” of light alloy. The interior of the sports version of the French sedan “Renault Fluence GT” the designers decided to sew a fabric and stitch a thin contrasting thread.
The interior was decorated with black “dashboard” inserts, aluminium pedals and metal door sill covers. The Renault Fluence GT interior is completed with a shiny gearbox handle and GT letters. The basic equipment of the sedan includes a 2-zone climate control system, TomTom navigation system, xenon headlights, keyless cabin access system, 6 airbags, and a rain sensor.
As for the technical part of this machine, everything is in place. Under the hood, the Renault Fluence GT has a turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine, which develops 190 horsepower (300 Nm of torque). The engine is equipped with a distributed fuel injection system and a 16-valve gas distribution system. This potential is transferred to the front due to the 6-speed manual transmission.
From zero to the first hundred the machine is accelerated in 8 seconds. The maximum speed is 222 kilometres per hour. The chassis is installed as before, but the chassis together with the steering system is equipped with sports settings. But the braking system received a powerful braking system, where there are ventilated 296-millimeter disks in front and 260-millimeter rear.
They work together with electronic systems ABS, EBD, ASR and so on. The sports model was sold only on the territory of the South American market. It was possible to buy a car from $27,200.
Tuning
Despite the fact that the compact French sedan Renault Fluence was released not so long ago, many drivers are mastering a variety of options and technologies to improve certain units of the machine. In fact, every car owner strives to distinguish his vehicle among the total flow of cars. With the help of Renault Fluence tuning the car is given individuality and uniqueness.
Thanks to qualitative changes or improvements in the exterior of the car, it becomes more attractive, looks more expensive. The latest update has had a positive effect on the “Frenchman”, giving it a retouched appearance. Therefore, it is important not to overload the appearance of the sedan, so that all this does not look nalapisto. Some Renault Fluence owners decide to install improved front optics.
Instead of basic lamps, many install bi-xenon linearized lighting elements, which have additional diode clearance lights, as well as two-way direction indicators. Armrests can be installed in the passenger compartment between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat. Drivers replace the standard door handles with advanced, chrome-plated handles.
