Which Mach-E to choose
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For the longest range: the Extended Range RWD, rated at 320 miles (515 km) EPA in its 2024–2025 form.
- For all-weather traction: the Standard or Extended Range AWD; the 2024 Standard AWD has 242 kW and 678 Nm.
- For performance: the GT with 358 kW and 949 Nm from 2024, or the Rally, the quickest Mach-E to 60 mph.
- For a used buy: a model-year 2022 or later car; the May 2022 recall addressed a software fault in 2021 AWD cars.

Development and launch
Ford introduced the Mach-E on 17 November 2019. It uses the GE1 platform, which Wikipedia describes as a heavily reworked version of Ford's C2 platform for compact cars. Sales started in December 2020 for the 2021 model year. Cuautitlán Izcalli in Mexico is the main plant. Changan Ford assembled it in Chongqing for China from 2021 until production there ended in 2025.
The Mach-E was named 2021 North American SUV of the Year and Car and Driver's EV of the Year 2021. The petrol car that gave it its name is described in our guide to the Ford Mustang generations.

Updates from 2023 to 2025
For the 2023 model year Ford added a 78 kWh LFP battery from CATL as an alternative standard-range pack. The model-year 2024 update raised torque across the range, and the GT now delivers 949 Nm. That is 136 Nm more than the 813 Nm of the 2021 GT.
| Version (2024–2025) | Power | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Range RWD | 197 kW (268 PS) | 525 Nm |
| Standard Range AWD | 242 kW (329 PS) | 678 Nm |
| Extended Range RWD | 203 kW (276 PS) | — |
| Extended Range AWD | 276 kW (375 PS) | — |
| GT | 358 kW (487 PS) | 949 Nm |
In 2024 the California Route 1 trim was dropped and the Rally was added above the GT, with 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds. For 2025 the front boot was reduced to make room for a heat pump. In the US the 2025 car still has a CCS1 socket; owners can use Tesla's NACS network with an adapter.

Battery, range and charging
The standard-range battery holds 75.7 kWh gross, of which about 68 to 72.6 kWh are usable. The extended-range pack has 98.8 kWh gross and about 88 to 91 kWh usable. All versions charge at up to 11 kW on AC. On DC the peak is 115 to 150 kW depending on the version.
Wikipedia gives WLTP ranges from about 435 km to 600 km across the versions. The EV database evkx.net lists 440 km WLTP and 15.9 kWh/100 km for the model-year 2025 Standard Range RWD, which charges from 10 to 80 percent in about 34 minutes. On the US EPA cycle the 2024–2025 Extended Range RWD is rated at 320 miles (515 km).
Interior and practicality
The rear luggage area holds about 821 litres according to Wikipedia, plus about 136 litres in the front boot. The Mach-E is 4,739 mm long on a 2,984 mm wheelbase. The kerb weight ranges from about 1,993 to 2,218 kg depending on battery and drive.

Safety and recalls
Euro NCAP tested a Mach-E in 2021. It scored 92 percent for adult occupants, 86 for children, 69 for pedestrians and 82 for the assistance systems. ANCAP gave similar results for all versions except the GT. The adult occupant score of 92 percent was the best of the four areas. In the US the IIHS named the 2021 Mach-E a Top Safety Pick.
In May 2022 Ford recalled 2021 all-wheel-drive cars because a software fault could cause unintended acceleration, deceleration or a loss of power. NHTSA also opened an investigation after a crash involving the driver-assistance system.
