Which F-150 to choose
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
For most private buyers the 2.7 EcoBoost is the sensible base: it has the same 542 Nm in the 13th and 14th generations and is the standard engine on the volume trims. The 3.5 EcoBoost is the choice for heavy trailers, with the highest towing rating of the range. The 5.0 V8 suits buyers who prefer a naturally aspirated engine. The PowerBoost hybrid makes sense for those who will use the 7.2 kW generator on building sites or for camping.
A used 13th-generation truck from 2018 onwards has the 10-speed gearbox and the facelift equipment; check that the recall work has been done. Rivals such as the Ram 1500 Rebel can be lined up on our comparison page.
The Ford F-150 is the half-ton model of Ford's F-Series pickups, the line that has been the best-selling pickup in the United States since 1977 and the country's best-selling vehicle since 1981. The F-150 name first appeared in 1975. Since 2015 the truck has had an aluminium body on a steel frame, the 14th generation arrived for the 2021 model year with a PowerBoost hybrid, and from 2022 to 2025 Ford also built the battery-electric F-150 Lightning.
In short
- F-150 introduced in 1975 between the F-100 and the F-250; split from the heavier F-250 and F-350 with the 1997 redesign.
- 13th generation (2015–2020): aluminium body panels cut kerb weight by nearly 340 kg (750 lb); 10-speed automatic from 2017.
- 14th generation (from 2021): petrol V6 and V8 engines from 242 kW (325 hp) to 537 kW (720 hp) in the Raptor R, plus a 321 kW (430 hp) hybrid.
- F-150 Lightning (2022–2025): two motors, 98 or 131 kWh battery, 337 or 433 kW (452 or 580 hp) and 1,051 Nm.

The F-150 sits in the Ford catalogue among the brand's cars and trucks. 1cars also covers the F-150-based Halo Sandcat, a 2015 show truck that Ford and Galpin Auto Sports built to promote the Halo 5 video game.
From F-Series to F-150
The F-Series started in 1948 as Ford's first post-war truck range, sold in eight weight ratings. Three-digit names such as F-100 and F-250 arrived with the second generation in 1953. The F-150 was added in 1975 and placed between the F-100 and F-250; Wikipedia reports that it was created to avoid certain emission control rules that applied to lighter trucks.
Several firsts followed. The eighth generation of 1987 had composite headlights, the first on a full-size American truck. The tenth generation, introduced on 25 January 1996 for the 1997 model year, replaced the Twin I-Beam front axle with independent front suspension and separated the F-150 from the heavier F-250 and F-350. In 2001 the F-150 became the first half-ton pickup with a crew cab and four full-size doors. The 2004 truck had a fully boxed frame, the 2009 truck dropped the manual gearbox, and the off-road SVT Raptor joined the range in 2010.
Performance versions came earlier. The first SVT Lightning of 1993 used a 5.8-litre V8 with 179 kW (240 hp). Its successor of 1999 had a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 with 268 kW (360 hp), raised to 283 kW (380 hp) in 2001.

The aluminium 13th generation (2015–2020)
Ford showed the 13th-generation F-150 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 13 January 2014, and production began on 11 November 2014. Nearly all body panels were now aluminium. The frame stayed steel, but the share of high-strength steel rose from 23 % to 77 %. Together this saved nearly 340 kg (750 lb). The truck was also the first pickup with adaptive cruise control.
Three cabs were offered: the two-door Regular Cab, the SuperCab with two small rear doors and the four-door SuperCrew. Beds measured 5.5 ft, 6.5 ft or 8 ft (about 1.7, 2.0 and 2.4 m). Wheelbases ranged from 3,109 to 4,158 mm, overall length from 5,316 to 6,363 mm, and kerb weight from 1,846 to 2,584 kg.
The Raptor returned for 2017 without the SVT prefix and was nearly 230 kg (500 lb) lighter than the 2014 SVT Raptor. It introduced the 10-speed 10R80 automatic, which spread to the EcoBoost, V8 and diesel engines for 2018. The same 2018 update brought a new grille, a standard rear-view camera and the Sync 3 infotainment system.
Two large recalls concern buyers of used trucks. In October 2017 Ford recalled about 1.3 million 2015–2017 trucks because door latches could freeze, and in September 2018 about 2 million 2015–2018 trucks over seat-belt pretensioners that could cause sparks.

The 14th generation (from 2021)
The current F-150 was presented in June 2020, and production started on 12 October 2020. Every exterior panel was new. Trucks are built in Dearborn, where all hybrid PowerBoost models are made, and in Kansas City.
The PowerBoost hybrid pairs the 3.5 EcoBoost V6 with a 35 kW (47 hp) electric motor in the gearbox and a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery under the bed. Its main practical advantage is Pro Power Onboard: a built-in generator with 2.4 kW as standard or 7.2 kW as an option, with outlets in the bed for tools, camping or emergency power.
The range grew quickly. The off-road Tremor returned in December 2020, a new Raptor was announced in February 2021, and the 2023 model year added the Raptor R with a supercharged 5.2-litre V8. The 3.0 Power Stroke diesel was dropped for 2022.
The update for the 2024 model year was presented on 12 September 2023. It brought new grilles and lights, a standard 12-inch digital instrument cluster and 12-inch touchscreen with Sync 4, the optional Pro Access tailgate and the BlueCruise hands-free driving assistant on XLT and higher trims. The 3.3 V6 was dropped, and four-wheel drive became standard on the Lariat and higher trims. For the 2027 model year a 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 with the same 242 kW replaces the 2.7.

A SuperCrew is 2,029 mm wide (the Raptor 2,200 mm), 5,885–6,185 mm long and 1,920–1,971 mm high, on a 3,693–3,993 mm wheelbase. Kerb weight starts at about 1,824 kg. Our size comparison tool shows how this compares with a European SUV or a garage.

F-150 Lightning: the electric pickup
Ford unveiled the battery-electric F-150 Lightning on 19 May 2021. Production started on 26 April 2022 at the new Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, and the first truck was delivered on 26 May 2022. It used two motors, all-wheel drive and a front trunk in place of an engine.
| Version | Battery (usable) | Power | Torque | EPA range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard range | 98 kWh | 337 kW (452 hp) | 1,051 Nm | 370–390 km (sources differ) |
| Extended range | 131 kWh | 433 kW (580 hp) | 1,051 Nm | 510 km; 480 km for the Platinum |
The Lightning could tow up to 4,500 kg (10,000 lb) and carry up to 1,014 kg including the front trunk. It charged at up to 155 kW on DC, offered up to 9.6 kW of on-board power for tools, and in some trims could supply a house during a power cut through Ford's Intelligent Backup Power. In 2023 it was named North American Truck of the Year and MotorTrend Truck of the Year.
US sales were 15,617 in 2022, 24,165 in 2023, 33,510 in 2024 and 27,307 in 2025. In December 2025 Ford announced that it would stop building the Lightning because it could not make the model profitable. More electric models are collected in our electric cars section.

Sales of the F-Series
Ford reports sales for the whole F-Series, including the heavier Super Duty trucks, rather than for the F-150 alone. In the United States the line sold 787,372 vehicles in 2020, 653,957 in 2022 and 828,832 in 2025.
