Our verdict · Sarah Whitmore
- For towing heavy trailers: a 2023-on F-350 or F-450 with the High Output 6.7 Power Stroke.
- For a petrol truck: the 7.3-litre Godzilla V8 (2020 on), the strongest petrol engine of the range.
- For off-road use: the Tremor package on the F-250 or F-350 (2020 on).
- For a used buy: check whether a 2003–2007 truck with the 6.0 Power Stroke has had its known EGR, injector and turbo repairs.
Before buying, measure your garage with our will-it-fit tool, and compare sizes and outputs with other pickups in our comparison tool. Other Ford trucks are listed in the Ford catalogue.
The Ford Super Duty is the heavy-duty end of Ford's F-Series. It covers the F-250 and F-350 pickups, the F-450 pickup and chassis cab, and the F-550 and F-600 chassis cabs. Introduced for the 1999 model year, it split Ford's heavy pickups from the lighter F-150. Today it is in its fifth generation and comes from plants in Kentucky and Ohio. The strongest engine is the High Output 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel with 373 kW (500 hp).

The first Super Duty also spawned the Ford Excursion, a large SUV built on the F-250 from 2000 to 2005.
The first Super Duty (1999–2007)
The name is older than the trucks. Ford first used it in 1958 for big-block truck engines, and in 1988 for a Class 4 chassis cab called the F-Super Duty. Production of the new range began on 5 January 1998 at the Kentucky Truck Plant.
Underneath were heavy-duty leaf springs. Two-wheel-drive trucks had Twin I-Beam front suspension, while 4x4s used solid Dana axles. The petrol choices were a 5.4-litre Triton V8 and a 6.8-litre V10. The diesel was the 7.3-litre Power Stroke, rated at 175–205 kW (235–275 hp). In 2003 a 6.0-litre Power Stroke took its place, good for 242 kW (325 hp).
The 6.0 became known for failures of its EGR valve, injectors and turbocharger. A class action over them was settled in 2013, and Ford paid back repair costs. The one-millionth Super Duty was built in 2001, marked by a Platinum Edition. The King Ranch trim arrived in 2003, and Harley-Davidson editions ran from 2004.

Power Stroke 6.4 and 6.7 (2008–2016)
The second generation was delayed from 2007 to the 2008 model year. Its main news was the 6.4-litre Power Stroke, rated at 261 kW (350 hp) in pickups. A dual-rear-wheel F-450 pickup joined the range. In 2008 it could tow up to 11,113 kg (24,500 lb) and carry 2,776 kg (6,120 lb). Both petrol engines carried over with more power.
The third generation arrived for 2011. In pickups, a 6.2-litre Boss V8 replaced both petrol engines. More important was Ford's own 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel. It started at 291 kW (390 hp), soon rose to 298 kW (400 hp) and reached 328 kW (440 hp) in 2015. F-450 towing grew from 11,068 kg (24,400 lb) in 2011 to 14,152 kg (31,200 lb) in 2015. The Platinum trim reached the Super Duty in 2013.

Aluminium body and Godzilla V8 (2017–2022)
The fourth generation of 2017 was the first all-new Super Duty since 1999. Its body is aluminium, made of 6000-series alloy. The frame is about 95% high-strength steel, and the truck lost up to 318 kg (700 lb). The cab is shared with the F-150. In 2017 an F-250 XL started at $32,535, and an F-450 Platinum at $77,125. A year later, in 2018, the F-450 Limited became the first factory pickup priced at $100,000.
The diesel kept growing, to 354 kW (475 hp) for 2020. That year also brought the 7.3-litre "Godzilla" petrol V8 with 321 kW (430 hp). The off-road Tremor package arrived for the F-250 and F-350. The F-600 chassis cab returned too, rated for 9,979 kg (22,000 lb) gross. In April 2017 Ford recalled about 52,000 F-250s, because a fault could let the truck move in Park. No injuries were reported.

The fifth generation P708 (2023 on)
Ford revealed the fifth generation in September 2022, and production began in early 2023. F-250 and F-350 pickups now start with a 6.8-litre Godzilla V8 of 302 kW (405 hp). It gained flex-fuel capability for 2024. The 7.3-litre petrol V8 stays at 321 kW (430 hp). Diesel buyers choose between the standard 6.7 Power Stroke and a new High Output version. The latter makes 373 kW (500 hp) and 1,627 Nm (1,200 lb-ft). Every pickup has the 10R140 ten-speed automatic.
For 2025 Ford reshuffled the trims. Platinum Plus replaced Limited, and the Lariat became crew-cab only, with synthetic ActiveX seats. A Carhartt Edition for the 2027 model year was revealed on 7 May 2026.
