Which Edge to buy: verdict

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

For European buyers, the choice is between the early 2.0 TDCi models of 2016-2018 and the EcoBlue cars from 2018. The 154 kW Bi-Turbo with the PowerShift gearbox is the more relaxed car for long distances, while the 132 kW manual is cheaper and has the same official consumption. The later 175 kW EcoBlue with the eight-speed automatic is the most powerful European Edge, but there are few of them on the used market. Compare it with other large SUVs in the comparison tool.

The Ford Edge is a mid-size crossover that Ford introduced in North America for the 2007 model year and sold in Europe, with diesel engines only, from 2016. Two generations were built at Oakville, Ontario, until April 2024; a third, the Edge L, is made in China by Changan Ford. For European buyers the Edge is now a used car: Ford sold the last stock in early 2021.

In short

  • Three generations: first (2007-2014) and second (2015-2024) built in Canada, third (Edge L, since 2023) built in China.
  • Europe only had the second generation, with 2.0 diesels from 132 kW (180 PS) to 175 kW (238 PS) and all-wheel drive as standard.
  • A new 2.0 TDCi Trend cost EUR 41,900 in Germany (ADAC, 2016-2018 list price).
  • Euro NCAP gave the European Edge five stars in 2016.

Ford Edge at a glance: segment, body and where it is built

The Edge was Ford's first mid-size crossover in North America, slotted between the Escape (Kuga in Europe) and the Explorer, and its first generation shared its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion saloon. Lincoln sold a more upmarket sister model as the MKX, renamed Nautilus from 2019. Both Edge generations for North America and Europe came from Oakville Assembly in Ontario, Canada. North American production ended on 26 April 2024 without a direct successor, while the Chinese Edge L continues.

In Europe, Ford marketed the Edge from the 2015 redesign, positioned above the Kuga, with diesel engines and all-wheel drive only. Wikipedia gives model years 2016-2021 for Europe and 2015-2019 for the UK.

Third (Edge L) - since 2023 5-door SUV 2.0 turbo, 2.0 hybrid 183-200 kW (248-272 PS)

The first Edge debuted at the 2006 Detroit show, and production began in January 2006 for the 2007 model year. A 2011 update brought a new front end and interior and made it the first Ford offered with MyFord Touch. The second generation, launched for 2015, was the first sold in Europe; its 2019 facelift brought an eight-speed automatic with stop-start and the Edge ST. The third generation was revealed on 23 February 2023 as the Edge L for China, where it replaced the seven-seat Edge Plus.

North American Edge. The first generation used a 3.5-litre V6 with 198 kW (265 hp), later 213 kW (285 hp), a 227 kW (305 hp) 3.7-litre V6 in the Sport, and from 2011 a 2.0 EcoBoost with 179 kW (240 hp), all with the 6F50 six-speed automatic. The second generation offered a 2.0 EcoBoost with 183 kW (245 hp), a 3.5 V6 with 209 kW (280 hp) until 2018 and a 2.7 EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 with 235 kW (315 hp) in the Sport. From 2019 the ST used the 2.7 with 250 kW (335 hp).

Chinese Edge L. The 2.0 turbo petrol produces 183 kW (248 PS) and 378 Nm with an eight-speed automatic; the hybrid combines a 2.0 engine with an electric motor for 200 kW (272 PS) and 405 Nm through an eCVT. Both can have all-wheel drive. The Edge L is 5,000 mm long. In November 2025 Panama became its first market in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the hybrid only.

Figures are ADAC's for the European 2.0 TDCi Trend. The 602-litre boot and five seats made the Edge a large car by European standards; at almost 1.93 m wide it is worth using the garage fit tool before buying a used one.

Fuel economy and running costs

Under the old NEDC cycle, both European diesels were rated at 5.8 l/100 km (40.6 mpg US) and 149 g/km of CO2. NEDC figures were generally lower than real-world consumption, so expect more in daily driving. The braked towing capacity of 2,000 kg is useful for caravans and horse trailers. Our fuel cost calculator gives a realistic annual figure if you enter your own consumption.

Trims and equipment

In Germany ADAC lists the Trend, Titanium, Sport (June 2016 to April 2017), ST-Line (April 2017 to August 2018) and the Vignale luxury line (from August 2016). Prices ran from EUR 41,900 for the 2.0 TDCi Trend to EUR 49,500 for the 2.0 TDCi Bi-Turbo Titanium with the PowerShift gearbox. Wikipedia notes that European prices were about 50% higher than in North America.

Safety ratings: Euro NCAP 2016

Euro NCAP tested the European Edge in 2016 and awarded five stars.

Area Score
Adult occupant 85%
Child occupant 76%
Pedestrian 67%
Safety assist 89%

ANCAP's 2016 rating for the same car, sold in Australia as the Ford Endura, was also five stars. In the United States the 2016 Edge received five stars in every NHTSA category. Other results are on our safety ratings page.

Reliability and known issues

The sources used for this article do not record a pattern of faults specific to the European Edge, and with fewer than 10,000 cars sold a year in Europe there is little survey data. A used Edge should be judged on its service history and condition; ask for proof of recall work, check the dual-clutch PowerShift gearbox of the Bi-Turbo for smooth shifts on the test drive, and check that the all-wheel-drive system works correctly.

Rivals: how the Edge compared

Model Engines Power (hp) Boot (l) Price from (EUR)
Ford Edge 2.0 TDCi Trend 4x4 2.0 diesel 132 kW (180 PS) 602 41,900 (DE, 2016)
Ford Edge 2.0 TDCi Bi-Turbo Titanium 2.0 diesel 154 kW (210 PS) 602 49,500 (DE, 2016)

Figures are ADAC's. In Europe the Edge competed with large five-seat SUVs such as the Volkswagen Touareg, Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe, but it never found many buyers: 9,300 cars in 2016, 8,644 in 2019 and 348 in 2021. In North America it was a different story, with a peak of 138,515 US sales in 2019.
