Verdict Opinion
As classics the two appeal to different instincts. A rear-wheel-drive Escort Mk I or Mk II, ideally a Mexico, RS1600 or RS2000, carries the rally history and has become a sought-after collector's car. A Mk1 or Mk2 Golf GTI represents the birth of the hot hatch.
Among the front-wheel-drive cars of the 1980s the choice is about character: the Golf GTI founded the class, and the Escort XR3i and RS Turbo were Ford's sporting answers to it. For any classic of either make, a documented history matters more than the badge, because replicas and modified cars exist.

For two decades these two were among the most important family cars in Europe. The Volkswagen Golf arrived in May 1974 with a body drawn by Giorgetto Giugiaro, a transverse engine and front-wheel drive. Ford's Escort was older: it was shown in Brussels in January 1968 as a conventional rear-wheel-drive saloon that replaced the Anglia.
The two concepts met head-on only in September 1980, when the third Escort switched to front-wheel drive and a hatchback body. From then until the Escort's European production ended in October 2002, the Golf and the Escort fought for the same buyers, especially in Britain and Germany.
Ford Escort vs VW Golf: how the classic rivals compare
Front-wheel drive: the Golf first, the Escort in 1980
The Golf was front-wheel drive from the start. The first two Escorts kept rear-wheel drive, which suited rallying. Ford needed six years after the Golf's debut to offer the same format, and the Mk III that did so was voted European Car of the Year 1981.
GTI against XR3i and RS Turbo
Volkswagen invented the hot hatch in June 1976: the Golf GTI had a fuel-injected 1.6 with 81 kW (110 PS) and reached about 180 km/h. Ford's answer came with the Mk III. The XR3i and the RS 1600i of 1983 had 85 kW (115 PS), and the RS Turbo of 1985 had 97 kW (132 PS). Volkswagen countered with the supercharged Golf G60 of 1989 with 118 kW (160 PS), and later the VR6 with 128 kW (174 PS).
Rally titles: the Escort's domain
Here the Escort is in a different league. Hannu Mikkola won the 1970 World Cup Rally from London to Mexico in an Escort. The RAC Rally then fell to Escorts five times in a row between 1975 and 1979, and Ford became world champion among manufacturers in 1979. The four-wheel-drive Escort RS Cosworth of 1992, with 167 kW (225 PS) from a 2.0 turbo, continued the line.
Sales in Britain and worldwide
The Escort was Britain's best-selling car for eight years in the 1980s, and more than 4.1 million found buyers there over 33 years. The Golf has the bigger global total: more than 37 million cars since 1974, which makes it Volkswagen's best-selling model.
Six Escort generations, eight Golfs
The Escort ran to six European generations before the Focus took over in 1998, while production of the old car continued until 2002. The Golf is now in its eighth generation and still built in Wolfsburg.

In plain words
Volkswagen Golf has more power: 118 kW (160 PS) against 97 kW (132 PS) for Ford Escort. Ford Escort is the older design (from 1968); Volkswagen Golf arrived in 1974. Volkswagen Golf is still in production; Ford Escort is not. On the catalog figures, the Volkswagen Golf is the pick for off-road. Our catalog has no kerb mass for the Ford Escort yet, so some checks above leave it out.
Which one to choose
Choose a Ford Escort if you want rally heritage, a rear-wheel-drive classic (Mk I or Mk II) or one of the 1980s Ford performance models, the XR3i, RS Turbo or RS Cosworth.
Choose a Volkswagen Golf if you want the original hot hatch, the car that founded the class, or a Golf G60 or VR6 from the late 1980s and 1990s.
The car that replaced the Escort is described in our article on the first and second Ford Focus, and the company story is in the history of Ford.
