Verdict Opinion

The Corvette is the stronger offer if raw performance is the measure. It has a large V8, more torque than any 911 below the Turbo and a long wheelbase. In the Z06 it also has one of the most exotic naturally aspirated engines on sale. Motor Trend named the C8 its 2020 Car of the Year.

The 911 wins on breadth and compactness. It is shorter and lighter and still offers a manual gearbox. The range runs from the 290 kW Carrera through the hybrid GTS to the GT3 and the 523 kW Turbo S, with Targa, cabriolet and all-wheel-drive versions in between.

Which one to choose ↓

The Corvette C8 and the Porsche 911 of the 992 generation arrive at the same goal, a sports car for daily use, from opposite ends. Chevrolet moved the engine behind the driver for the first time. The C8, revealed on 18 July 2019 at the Kennedy Space Center, is the first rear mid-engine Corvette. Production started at Bowling Green, Kentucky, on 3 February 2020. Porsche kept the formula it has refined since 1963. The 992 was shown on 27 November 2018 in Los Angeles, and its 992.2 update was launched on 28 May 2024.

In short: the Chevrolet Corvette gives more cylinders, more torque and a longer wheelbase. The Porsche 911 is shorter, lighter in its base form and offers a far wider spread of versions, including manual gearboxes. The figures below come from the Corvette C8 and Porsche 911 pages of our catalogue.

Chevrolet Corvette vs Porsche 911: what separates them

Mid-engine V8 against rear-engine flat-six

The Stingray's 6.2-litre LT2 V8 delivers 365 kW (497 PS) and 630 Nm in US form; the European version is rated at 354 kW. The 992.2 Carrera S uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six with 353 kW (480 PS) and 530 Nm, and the entry Carrera has 290 kW (394 PS) and 450 Nm. So the Stingray, priced as the Corvette's starting point, already matches the 911's second rung on power and beats it by 100 Nm on torque.

Size and weight

The Corvette is the bigger car: 4,630 mm long on a 2,723 mm wheelbase, against 4,519–4,535 mm and 2,450 mm for the 911. Its 273 mm longer wheelbase is a direct result of the engine sitting ahead of the rear axle. Chevrolet lists the Stingray at 1,654 kg; the 992.2 Carrera weighs 1,516 kg.

Acceleration

Chevrolet Europe quotes 3.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h for the Stingray and a top track speed of 296 km/h. Porsche's 992.2 Carrera S needs the same 3.5 seconds, or 3.3 with the Sport Chrono package.

Gearboxes

Every C8 uses a Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission; there is no manual. Porsche fits an eight-speed PDK to most versions but still sells a seven-speed manual, first offered on the GTS, and a six-speed manual for the GT3.

Hybrids

Both brands have electrified their sports car without making it a plug-in. The Corvette E-Ray adds an electric front axle and became the first all-wheel-drive Corvette, with 488 kW (664 PS) combined; Chevrolet Europe quotes 473 kW and 2.9 seconds to 100 km/h. The 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid is the first series-production hybrid 911. It pairs a 3.6-litre flat-six with an electric motor for a system output of 398 kW (541 PS) and reaches 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds.

Track models: Z06 against GT3

The Z06 has a 5.5-litre naturally aspirated LT6 V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, 500 kW (679 PS) and 624 Nm. The 911 GT3 relies on a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six with 375 kW (510 PS). At the very top, the ZR1's twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 makes 793 kW and 1,123 Nm, and the ZR1X hybrid 932 kW, the most powerful Corvette built. The 992.2 Turbo S T-Hybrid offers 523 kW, 800 Nm and 2.5 seconds to 100 km/h, and lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:03.92.

Running costs on paper

Chevrolet Europe lists combined consumption of 12.3 l/100 km and 281 g/km of CO2 for the Stingray, rising to 15.9 l/100 km for the Z06. Chevrolet Europe quotes 357 litres of cargo volume for the two-seat Stingray.

In plain words

Chevrolet Corvette has more power: 365 kW (496 PS) against 353 kW (480 PS) for Porsche 911. Chevrolet Corvette is 111 mm longer than Porsche 911 (4,630 mm vs 4,519 mm). Chevrolet Corvette is the older design (from 1953); Porsche 911 arrived in 1964. On the catalog figures, the Porsche 911 is the pick for city and off-road. Our catalog has no 0–100 km/h for the Chevrolet Corvette yet, so some checks above leave it out.

Which one to choose

Choose the Chevrolet Corvette if you want a mid-engine V8 with 630 Nm from the base model or an all-wheel-drive hybrid in the E-Ray. The flat-plane-crank Z06 also offers more power than the naturally aspirated 911 GT3.

Choose the Porsche 911 if you value a smaller, lighter car, a manual gearbox, the widest choice of body styles and drive layouts, or the proven Turbo S as an everyday supercar.

The 911 also meets Japan's fastest coupé in our Nissan GT-R vs Porsche 911 comparison, and the Corvette faces an American V10 in Corvette vs Dodge Viper.
