Which Charger Scat Pack to choose

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

A narrow-body car, offered in every year from 2015 to 2023, gives the full 485 hp for the least money. The 2020-2023 Widebody is the one for drivers who use the chassis, and it costs nothing extra in fuel. The 2023 Super Bee and Swinger are limited specials with published production numbers and are the most collectible versions.

When buying, specialist guides advise listening for a valvetrain tick from the 6.4 that does not fade once warm, checking the eight-speed for harsh shifts, and testing all electrical functions, since weak batteries and poor earth connections cause faults on Chargers of this period. Fast Car notes that the eight-speed removed many of the gearbox complaints of the earlier five-speed cars.

The Scat Pack sat below the Charger SRT Hellcat and above the 5.7-litre R/T. From 2024 Dodge applied the Scat Pack name to the electric Charger Daytona and to a petrol Sixpack with a twin-turbocharged straight-six, both described in the Dodge Charger history. The four-door Charger's closest relative in spirit is the 1968-1970 Charger R/T, and all Dodge models, past and present, are in the Dodge catalogue. Rivals with similar power are compared in the car comparison tool.

The Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack was the four-door Charger with the 6.4-litre "392" Hemi from 2015 to 2023, rated at 362 kW (485 hp) and always paired with an eight-speed automatic. It cost US$40,990 for 2015 including destination, and from 2020 a Widebody version added wider bodywork, bigger tyres and adaptive dampers.

In short

  • 6.4 L (392 cu in) Hemi V8, 362 kW (485 hp) and 644 Nm (475 lb-ft); TorqueFlite 8HP70 eight-speed automatic.
  • Cars.com ran the quarter mile in 12.39 s at 112.44 mph with a 2015 car weighing about 1,996 kg (4,400 lb).
  • Widebody (2020-2023): 0-60 mph in 4.3 s, quarter mile 12.4 s at 111 mph, 0.98 g on the skidpad.
  • The 2023 Last Call year brought the Super Bee and Swinger specials; the 2024 Charger reuses the Scat Pack name on an electric car.

The 392 at R/T money

For the 2015 facelift Dodge reworked nearly every outer panel of the LD Charger while keeping its dimensions, fitted new LED lamps and dropped the SRT8 name. The 6.4-litre engine stayed in the range in two places: in the SRT 392 and in a new, cheaper R/T Scat Pack, which according to Wikipedia took over the role of the SRT8 Super Bee.

The price gap was the point. At US$40,990 including destination in 2015, the Scat Pack cost less than the 2012 Charger SRT8 had cost before destination, with 11 kW more and a gearbox with three more ratios. Cars.com measured 12.39 seconds at 112.44 mph (181 km/h) over the quarter mile in its 2015 drag-strip test, 0.4 s quicker than Motor Trend's figure for the 2012 SRT8.

Unlike the two-door Challenger Scat Pack, the Charger was never offered with a manual gearbox. Every car used the ZF-designed eight-speed automatic built under the TorqueFlite name.

Widebody from 2020

The Charger Scat Pack Widebody was announced in 2019 for the 2020 model year, one year after the Challenger version. It gave the Scat Pack the flared body of the Hellcat Widebody, 89 mm (3.5 in) wider than standard.

Item Charger Scat Pack Widebody (2020)
Price US$45,995 before US$1,495 destination; US$6,000 over the narrow Scat Pack
Wheels and tyres 20 x 11 in "Devil's Rim" wheels, Pirelli 305/35ZR20
Brakes six-piston Brembo calipers at the front
Suspension Bilstein three-mode adaptive dampers, front springs 27 per cent stiffer, rear anti-roll bar up from 19 to 22 mm
Performance 0-60 mph 4.3 s; quarter mile 12.4 s at 111 mph; 60-0 mph 33 m (107 ft); 0.98 g skidpad
Road course 1.3 s per lap quicker than the narrow car (Dodge, via Hagerty)

The Widebody changed how the car went round corners more than how it went in a straight line. The quarter-mile time is almost the same as the narrow car's, but the lateral grip figure of 0.98 g put a 2-tonne saloon close to sports car territory.

The last year: Super Bee and Swinger

In November 2021 Stellantis confirmed that 2023 would be the final year of the Hemi Charger and Challenger, and all 2023 cars carried a "Last Call" plaque under the bonnet. Two of the Charger specials were Scat Pack based.

2023 special Base Production Price (US$, 2023, before destination)
Charger Super Bee Scat Pack, B5 Blue 500 61,805
Charger Super Bee Widebody Scat Pack Widebody, Plum Crazy 500 67,300
Charger Scat Pack Swinger Scat Pack Widebody 1,000 69,690

The 2023 Super Bee was the Charger version of the Challenger 1320 drag package, with drag radials, Drag mode for the adaptive suspension, black bonnet pins and Super Bee logos on the seats and dashboard, according to Guide Auto. The Swinger added Gold School wheels and badges, black six-piston Brembos and green-stitched Nappa and Alcantara seats. The plain 2023 Scat Pack started at US$48,745 before destination.

Fuel use and safety ratings

The Widebody did not cost anything at the pump in the EPA test. Both 2021 Charger versions with the 6.4-litre engine are rated identically:

Version (2021) City Combined Highway
Charger 6.4 L 15 mpg (15.7 L/100 km) 18 mpg (13.1 L/100 km) 24 mpg (9.8 L/100 km)
Charger Widebody 6.4 L 15 mpg (15.7 L/100 km) 18 mpg (13.1 L/100 km) 24 mpg (9.8 L/100 km)

The engine requires premium petrol. For comparison, the supercharged 6.2-litre SRT Widebody of the same year is rated at 15 mpg combined (15.7 L/100 km).

NHTSA gave the 2017 Charger five stars overall in both rear-drive and all-wheel-drive form. IIHS ratings for the 2021 car are Good in the moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, Marginal in the driver-side small overlap test and Poor for all headlight variants; optional forward collision warning earned a Superior rating.
