Which CX-60 to buy
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For long distances and towing: the 3.3 e-Skyactiv D 200, the most economical version and still rated to tow 2,500 kg.
- For company-car drivers with a wallbox: the PHEV, with 63 km of electric range and the strongest acceleration.
- For all-weather traction with the diesel: the D 254 AWD.
- Used: look for a 2025 model-year car or later, which has the softer rear springs.
The Mazda CX-60 is a mid-size SUV that Mazda has built in Japan since 2022 and the first model on its rear-drive Large Product platform. In Europe it is sold as a 241 kW plug-in hybrid with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine or as a 3.3-litre straight-six diesel with mild-hybrid assistance, always with an eight-speed automatic. Its price and equipment aim at the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC, while its ride has been revised three times since launch.
In short
- One generation (KH), revealed on 8 March 2022 and built at Mazda's Hofu Plant No. 2 in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Mazda CX-60 at a glance
The CX-60 is a five-seat, two-row SUV with the engine mounted lengthways and drive to the rear wheels or to all four, a layout Mazda had not used in an SUV before. It sits above the CX-5 and below the three-row CX-80, which shares its platform. Double wishbones at the front and a multi-link rear axle carry the body, and Kinematic Posture Control brakes the inside rear wheel slightly in corners to reduce body roll.

Mass production started with a ceremony at Hofu in late April 2022; Wikipedia dates the start of European production to 15 March 2022. The design team was led by Ren Inoue and Keisuke Watanabe.
Generations and versions
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CX-60 I | KH | 2022- | 5-door SUV | 2.5 petrol, 2.5 PHEV, 3.3 turbo petrol MHEV, 3.3 diesel, 3.3 diesel MHEV | 138-241 kW / 188-327 PS |
Europe got the plug-in hybrid first, from April 2022, and the diesels from July 2022. ADAC's German price lists start with the PHEV in June 2022 and the diesels in January 2023. Other markets have engines Europe never received: Japan and several Asian markets sell a 2.5-litre petrol with 138 kW (188 PS), and a 3.3-litre turbo petrol straight-six with mild hybrid and 209 kW (284 PS) is offered in markets such as Australia.
The CX-60's ride has been the main point of criticism. For the 2025 model year Mazda fitted softer rear springs and firmer dampers and recalibrated the stability systems (Fleet News); Australian cars got similar changes in May 2025. In October 2026 Mazda announced a third round of changes for Europe, with new rear subframe bushings, more sound insulation and an automated parking system, due in showrooms from December 2026 (CarExpert).

Engines, gearbox and performance
| Version (Europe) | Power | Torque | Drive | 0-100 km/h | Top speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 e-Skyactiv PHEV | 241 kW (327 PS) | 500 Nm | AWD | 5.8 s | 200 km/h (124 mph) |
| 3.3 e-Skyactiv D 200 | 147 kW (200 PS) | 450 Nm | RWD | 8.4 s | 212 km/h (132 mph) |
| 3.3 e-Skyactiv D 254 | 187 kW (254 PS) | 550 Nm | AWD | - | - |
The plug-in hybrid pairs the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129 kW (175 PS) electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery. ADAC lists an electric range of 63 km on the WLTP cycle and an electric top speed of 140 km/h; the onboard charger accepts up to 7.2 kW.
The 3,283 cc diesel is the more unusual engine: a newly developed straight-six. It works with a 48-volt M Hybrid Boost system whose 12 kW starter-generator adds up to 153 Nm at low loads. All versions use Mazda's own eight-speed automatic, which has a multi-plate clutch instead of a torque converter.

Space and practicality
At 4,745 mm the CX-60 is close to the BMW X3 in length but noticeably wider at 1,890 mm without mirrors, so measure narrow garages first with the garage fit checker. The boot holds 570 litres and up to 1,726 litres with the rear seats folded, the same in the PHEV and the diesels. Both can tow 2,500 kg braked, which makes the CX-60 a strong caravan or horsebox car for its size.
The cabin has a full digital instrument display, a head-up display and a 12.3-inch centre screen controlled by a rotary knob rather than by touch. The Driver Personalisation System uses a camera to recognise up to six drivers and set the seat, wheel and mirrors to suit their eye position.

Fuel economy and running costs
The diesel is the economy pick. ADAC lists the rear-drive 200 at 5.1 l/100 km and 132 g/km of CO2 on the WLTP cycle. The PHEV is rated at 3.8 l/100 km weighted, 7.7 l/100 km with an empty battery and 14.4 kWh/100 km of electricity, so its real-world cost depends on how often you plug it in. Test both scenarios in the fuel cost calculator.
In Germany Mazda gives a six-year or 160,000 km vehicle warranty, and the PHEV battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 km.
Trims, equipment and prices
European trims are Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Takumi, with Homura Plus and Takumi Plus added at the end of 2024. For 2025 the Homura cabin was brought into line with the CX-80 Homura, with black Nappa leather seats and a revised dashboard panel (Fleet News).
| Version (Germany) | Price | Listed from |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 PHEV Prime-Line AWD | EUR 50,950 | 11/2025 |
| 3.3 D 200 Prime-Line | EUR 52,150 | 11/2025 |
| 3.3 D 254 Exclusive-Line AWD | EUR 57,250 | 11/2025 |
| 2.5 PHEV Homura Plus AWD | EUR 64,150 | 11/2025 |
| 3.3 D 254 Takumi Plus AWD | EUR 67,600 | 11/2025 |
All prices are ADAC list prices. At launch in June 2022 the PHEV Prime-Line cost EUR 47,390.
Safety
Euro NCAP awarded the CX-60 five stars in 2022, with 88 percent for adult occupants, 91 percent for child occupants, 89 percent for vulnerable road users and 76 percent for safety assist. ANCAP adopted the same rating for Australia. See all results on our safety ratings page.
Reliability and known issues
The documented issues are about refinement rather than breakdowns. Reviewers, including CarExpert and Top Gear, criticised the firm, unsettled ride, and Mazda Australia said its 2025 update addressed complaints about the ride and the transmission. Three suspension revisions in three years confirm that Mazda took the complaints seriously. None of the sources we used document widespread mechanical failures.
Sales
Mazda sold 12,170 CX-60s in Europe in 2022, its first year. In Japan sales peaked at 23,941 in 2023 and fell to 6,395 in 2024, according to the figures collected on Wikipedia.
