Which CX-80 to buy
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For long distances and towing: the e-Skyactiv D diesel. Its 550 Nm, 2,500 kg towing limit and 5.7 l/100 km official economy suit high mileage.
- For short commutes with home charging: the PHEV, with about 60 km of electric range and the quickest 0-100 km/h time (6.8 s).
- For families who use all seats: pick a seven-seat bench version; the captain's chair layouts trade one seat for easier access to the third row.
The Mazda CX-80 is a seven-seat, five-metre SUV and Mazda's largest model in Europe. Revealed on 18 April 2024 and built at Hofu Plant No. 2 in Japan, it uses the same rear-drive-based Large architecture as the CX-60 but stretches it to a 3,120 mm wheelbase and adds a third row. Europe gets a 241 kW plug-in hybrid and a 187 kW straight-six diesel, both with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
In short
- One generation so far (model code KL), on sale in Europe since late 2024; it effectively replaces the CX-8 that was sold in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
- European engines: 2.5 e-Skyactiv PHEV with 241 kW (327 PS) and 500 Nm, or 3.3 e-Skyactiv D straight-six diesel with 48V mild-hybrid assistance and 187 kW (254 PS) and 550 Nm.
- 4,995 mm long on a 3,120 mm wheelbase; boot from 258 litres with all seats up to 1,971 litres with both rear rows folded.
- Five Euro NCAP stars in 2024; in Ireland prices started at EUR 62,380 in 2025.

Mazda CX-80 at a glance
| Specification | Mazda CX-80 |
|---|---|
| Segment | Large SUV (E-segment), six or seven seats |
| Model code | KL |
| Platform | Mazda Large Product Group architecture, shared with CX-60, CX-70 and CX-90 |
| Built | Hofu Plant No. 2, Yamaguchi, Japan |
| On sale | Japan and Europe from 2024 (European presales from May 2024, deliveries from autumn 2024) |

| Gearbox | 8-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic |
| Power (Europe) | 187-241 kW (254-327 PS) |
The CX-80 sits above the CX-60 in Mazda's line-up, and the Mazda brand page lists the rest of the range. It is not sold in North America, where the wider CX-90 takes its place. Compared with the five-seat CX-60, the CX-80 is longer and taller and has a much longer wheelbase, which Mazda used for a proper third row rather than a bigger boot.
Generations
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CX-80 I | KL | 2024- | 5-door SUV, 6 or 7 seats | 2.5 PHEV, 3.3 diesel mild hybrid, 3.3 turbo petrol mild hybrid (Australia) | 187-241 kW (254-327 PS), Europe |
There is only one generation. Mazda presented the European model in a virtual reveal on 18 April 2024 and opened presales in May 2024; dealer sales followed in the autumn. Australia launched the car on 12 November 2024 and New Zealand on 22 October 2024. In Japan the CX-80 also comes with a non-hybrid version of the diesel and with two-wheel drive on the base XD grade. Mazda sold 1,258 CX-80s in Japan in 2024.
Inside, the second row is offered in three layouts: a three-seat bench, or two captain's chairs with either a centre console or a walk-through gap to the third row. Both third-row seats fold flat into the floor.

Engines, gearbox and performance
| Version | Engine | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h | Top speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| e-Skyactiv PHEV | 2.5 four-cylinder petrol + electric motor, 17.8 kWh battery | 241 kW (327 PS) system | 500 Nm | 6.8 s | 195 km/h |
| e-Skyactiv D 254 | 3.3 straight-six turbodiesel + 48V M Hybrid Boost | 187 kW (254 PS) | 550 Nm | 8.4 s | 219 km/h |
Both European versions drive all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The all-wheel drive is rear-biased, and the Mi-Drive selector offers four modes, plus an EV mode on the plug-in hybrid. Mazda rates the braked towing capacity at 2,500 kg for both versions, a useful figure for anyone pulling a caravan or horsebox.
The plug-in hybrid pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Mazda quotes about 60 km of electric driving on the WLTP cycle. The diesel is the more unusual engine in this class: a 3.3-litre inline six with a small 48V motor that assists the engine rather than driving the car alone. In Australia, the range also includes the 3.3-litre turbo petrol six (G40e) as a mild hybrid. Use our power converter if you need the outputs in other units.
Dimensions, space and boot
| Parameter | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,995 mm | 196.7 in |
| Width (without mirrors) | 1,890 mm | 74.4 in |
| Height | 1,710 mm | 67.3 in |
| Wheelbase | 3,120 mm | 122.8 in |
| Kerb weight | 2,131-2,240 kg | 4,698-4,938 lb |
| Boot, all seats up | 258 l | 9.1 cu ft |
| Boot, third row folded | 687 l | 24.3 cu ft |
| Boot, both rear rows folded | 1,971 l | 69.6 cu ft |
| Braked towing | 2,500 kg | 5,512 lb |
At almost five metres, the CX-80 is longer than most rivals in its price range, and a garage check is worthwhile before ordering. Our garage fit tool uses length, width and height to show the clearance. With all seven seats in use, 258 litres is enough for shopping bags rather than holiday luggage; with the third row folded, the 687 litres match a large estate car.

Fuel economy and running costs
| Version | WLTP combined | CO2 |
|---|---|---|
| e-Skyactiv PHEV | 1.6 l/100 km and 23.9 kWh/100 km; 8.1 l/100 km with a flat battery | 36 g/km |
| e-Skyactiv D 254 | 5.7-5.8 l/100 km | 148-151 g/km |
Mazda's launch figures were preliminary and subject to type approval. The plug-in hybrid only reaches its low official figure if it is charged regularly; with an empty battery, Mazda's own number rises to 8.1 l/100 km. In a road test of the diesel, the Irish site Complete Car recorded 8.2 l/100 km against the official 5.7 l/100 km. In Ireland, the diesel's 148 g/km put it in the EUR 270 per year motor tax band (2025).
Trims and equipment
European grades are Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus. Mazda highlighted new technology at launch: Amazon Alexa voice control, hybrid online/offline navigation and a Trailer Hitch View camera mode. In Ireland, the CX-80 started at EUR 62,380 in 2025, and the diesel Exclusive-Line that Complete Car tested cost EUR 73,940 as specified.
Australia uses its own names (Pure, Touring, GT and Azami), and in Japan the grades are base, S Package, L Package and Premium.
Safety: Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP tested the CX-80 in 2024 (2.5 PHEV, left-hand drive) and awarded five stars:
| Area | Score |
|---|---|
| Adult occupant | 92% |
| Child occupant | 88% |
| Vulnerable road users | 84% |
| Safety assist | 79% |
New driver aids at launch included Cruising & Traffic Support with Unresponsive Driver Support, which can bring the car to a stop if the driver stops responding, Smart Brake Support with head-on collision mitigation, and Emergency Lane Keeping with head-on traffic avoidance. ANCAP aligned its 2024 rating with the Euro NCAP result. Our safety ratings section collects Euro NCAP results for other large SUVs.
Reliability and known issues
The CX-80 has been on sale only since late 2024, so there is no long-term reliability data yet, and we have not found a sourced pattern of faults specific to the model. The car shares its platform, plug-in hybrid system and diesel engine with the CX-60, which was launched in Europe in 2022, so CX-60 owner reports are the best early guide. Buyers should check which recalls or software updates have been applied to a particular car at a Mazda dealer.

The Volvo XC90 is the obvious premium alternative; the Hyundai Santa Fe offers a similar seven-seat package with smaller four-cylinder hybrid engines. Inside Mazda, the CX-60 is the five-seat choice with the same engines.
