Which one to buy
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Best all-rounder: the standard 209 kW (280 hp) 3.3 Turbo; it runs on regular fuel with only a small loss of power.
- For performance: the 254 kW (340 hp) Turbo S, which also brings adaptive headlights.
- For short daily trips: the PHEV, if you can charge at home; its 42 km electric range covers a typical commute.
- In Europe: buy the CX-80, which has the same platform, a European diesel and full EU homologation.
The Mazda CX-90 is a three-row, seven- or eight-seat SUV built at Mazda's Hofu Plant No. 2 in Japan since April 2023, mainly for North America, Australia and other export markets. It replaced the CX-9, uses the rear-biased Large Product Group platform of the CX-60 and is powered by a new 3.3-litre straight-six or a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid. It is not sold in Europe or Japan, where the closely related CX-80 fills the same role.

The CX-90 is Mazda's answer to the big family crossovers that sell in volume in the United States and Canada. It was launched in Mexico in April 2023, in New Zealand in September 2023 and in Chile in October 2023; Vietnam followed in February 2026 with the plug-in hybrid only. Its two-row sibling, the CX-70 (model code KJ), was revealed on 30 January 2024 and built from 2024. Other models of the brand, including the CX-80 that Europe gets instead, are in our Mazda catalogue.
Generations and model history
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CX-90 (first generation) | KK | 2023 to date | 5-door SUV, 7 or 8 seats | 3.3 turbo petrol MHEV, 2.5 PHEV, 3.3 diesel MHEV (Australia) | 187-254 kW (251-340 hp) |
The CX-90 has had one generation so far. For North America it carries 2024 and later model years. US trims started as Select, Preferred, Preferred Plus, Premium, Premium Plus, S, S Premium and S Premium Plus; for the 2025 model year Mazda dropped Preferred Plus, Premium and S and added Premium Sport. Canada uses GS, GS-L, GT, GT-P and Signature, and Australia Touring, GT and Azami.
Engines, transmissions and performance
All CX-90s have a longitudinal engine, an eight-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic that uses a wet clutch instead of a torque converter, and all-wheel drive. The six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines are mild hybrids: a small motor adds 12 kW and 153 Nm, fed by a 0.33 kWh battery.
| Version | Engine | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e-Skyactiv G (standard) | 3,283 cc turbo straight-six, mild hybrid | 209 kW (280 hp) | 450 Nm | 6.5 s |
| e-Skyactiv G (high output, S trims) | 3,283 cc turbo straight-six, mild hybrid | 254 kW (340 hp) | 500 Nm | 5.8 s |
| e-Skyactiv PHEV | 2,488 cc four-cylinder plus electric motor, 17.8 kWh | 241 kW (323 hp) system | 500 Nm system | 6.2 s |
| e-Skyactiv D (Australia) | 3,283 cc turbodiesel straight-six, mild hybrid | 187 kW (251 hp) | 550 Nm | 8.4 s |
The high-output petrol and the PHEV need premium fuel for their full figures; on regular fuel both are quoted at 238 kW (319 hp). The plug-in hybrid has an EPA electric range of 26 miles (42 km). Performance figures are those given in the Wikipedia specification table; the petrol times assume premium fuel.

Dimensions, space and boot
| Parameter | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 5,100-5,121 mm | 200.8-201.6 in |
| Width | 1,994 mm | 78.5 in |
| Height | 1,736-1,745 mm | 68.3-68.7 in |
| Wheelbase | 3,120 mm | 122.8 in |
| Kerb weight | 2,136-2,378 kg | 4,709-5,243 lb |
| Cargo, all seats up (US SAE) | 422 l | 14.9 cu ft |
| Cargo, third row folded | 1,133 l | 40.0 cu ft |
| Cargo, second and third rows folded | 2,101 l | 74.2 cu ft |
The cargo figures are Mazda USA's cubic-foot numbers converted to litres. They are measured to the American SAE method and are higher than the European VDA figures used for the CX-80, so do not compare them directly. At more than five metres long and almost two metres wide, the CX-90 is worth checking with our size comparison tool before you plan an import.
Fuel economy and running costs
Mazda USA quotes 25 mpg (US) combined, 23 city and 28 highway, for the 3.3 Turbo and Turbo S. That is about 9.4 l/100 km combined, 10.2 l/100 km in town and 8.4 l/100 km on the highway. The plug-in hybrid is rated at 56 MPGe combined with its 26-mile electric range. European WLTP figures do not exist, because the car has never been homologated for the EU.
Trims and prices
For the 2026 model year Mazda USA lists the six-cylinder CX-90 from USD 39,300 (2026, approx. EUR 34,000) for the 3.3 Turbo Select to USD 57,570 (2026, approx. EUR 49,000) for the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus, plus a destination charge of USD 1,645 (2026, approx. EUR 1,400). European taxes would add considerably to any private import. The 2026 petrol line-up in the US is:
- 3.3 Turbo Select: USD 39,300 (2026)
- 3.3 Turbo Preferred: USD 43,450 (2026)
- 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport: USD 47,480 (2026)
- 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus: USD 50,270 (2026)
- 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport: USD 54,140 (2026)
- 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus: USD 57,570 (2026)

Safety
Euro NCAP has not tested the CX-90 because it is not sold in Europe. In the United States the 2024 CX-90 earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, with Good ratings for the small and moderate overlap front tests, the side test, pedestrian front crash prevention and seat belt reminders. Headlights were rated Good on S trims and Acceptable on the PHEV and non-S trims, because only the turbo S versions have adaptive headlights. For European crash test results of the related CX-60 and CX-80, see our safety ratings.
Reliability and known issues
The CX-90 is a young model with a new engine, a new platform and a new transmission design. The sources used here do not document recurring faults, so we do not list any. Car and Driver put the CX-90 and the CX-90 plug-in hybrid on its 2024 Editors' Choice list of 12 mid-size SUVs.
