Which Tundra to choose

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • For the strongest new truck: the i-Force Max hybrid with 326 kW and 790 Nm.
  • For maximum towing: a third-generation configuration rated at up to 12,000 lb.
  • For a used V8: a second-generation 5.7 from 2007–2021, the last Tundra V8.
  • For off-road use: the TRD Pro, offered since 2015 and with the hybrid as standard in the third generation.
  • For a used third-generation truck: check whether the engine debris recall has been carried out.

The smaller sister truck is covered in the guide to the Toyota Hilux, and Toyota's large SUVs in the guides to the Toyota Sequoia and the Toyota Land Cruiser 300. The main US rivals include the Ford F-150 and the GMC Sierra.

The Toyota Tundra is Toyota's full-size pickup truck for North America, built in the United States since the 2000 model year. Three generations have followed: the first was built in Princeton, Indiana; the second and third come from San Antonio, Texas. For its third generation of 2022 Toyota dropped the V8s in favour of a twin-turbo V6 and the i-Force Max hybrid with 326 kW (437 hp). The Tundra was Motor Trend Truck of the Year in 2000 and 2008 and won the NASCAR Truck Series championship every year from 2006 to 2018.

All versions by generation are listed in the Toyota catalogue.

First generation (2000–2006)

The first Tundra was offered as a regular cab, an Access Cab and, later, a four-door Double Cab. The chassis code was XK30 for rear-wheel drive and XK40 for four-wheel drive. Motor Trend named it Truck of the Year 2000.

Engine (first generation) Years Power Torque
3.4 5VZ-FE V6 to 2004 142 kW (190 hp) 298 Nm
4.0 1GR-FE V6 from 2005 176 kW (236 hp) 361 Nm
4.7 2UZ-FE V8 to 2004 183 kW (245 hp) 427 Nm
4.7 V8 VVT-i 2005–2006 210 kW (282 hp); rerated 202 kW (271 hp) for 2006 441 / 424 Nm

The V6 came with a five-speed manual or an automatic, and the 4.0 V6 was offered with a six-speed manual; the V8 was automatic only. The 2006 rerating changed the published output but not the engine. Early trucks had problems: in 2009 Toyota recalled 2000–2003 models for rust in the rear crossmember. By January 2012, 533,000 trucks of the 2004–2006 model years had been recalled for ball-joint wear.

Second generation (2007–2021)

The second Tundra was offered as Regular Cab, Double Cab and the new CrewMax body. Its new 5.7-litre V8 had 284 kW (381 hp) and 544 Nm. Depending on the body, it could tow 9,000 to 10,400 lb (about 4,080 to 4,720 kg). Production moved entirely to San Antonio, Texas, in the second quarter of 2008. The Tundra won Motor Trend Truck of the Year a second time in 2008, and US sales peaked at 196,555 in 2007.

Engine (second generation) Years Power Torque

4.7 2UZ-FE V8 2007–2009 206 kW (276 hp) 424 Nm
4.6 1UR-FE V8 2010–2019 231 kW (310 hp) 443 Nm
5.7 3UR-FE V8 2007–2021 284 kW (381 hp) 544 Nm

Five- and six-speed automatic gearboxes were used. The luxury 1794 Edition arrived for 2014 and the off-road TRD Pro, with Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers and four-wheel drive, for 2015. In 2007 some early 5.7 V8s suffered camshaft failures, and 15,600 4x4 trucks were recalled for a rear propeller-shaft issue. Consumer Reports later rated the 2013 rear-wheel-drive Tundra as the full-size pickup with the highest predicted reliability.

Third generation (since 2022)

Toyota showed the first official photo of the new Tundra on 18 June 2021 and revealed it on 21 September 2021. Production in San Antonio began on 3 December 2021. The truck uses the GA-F body-on-frame platform. The rear axle uses coil springs or, on some versions, air springs.

Engine (third generation) Power Torque Gearbox
3.4 V35A-FTS twin-turbo V6 (i-Force) 260 to 290 kW (348 to 389 hp) 549 to 649 Nm 10-speed automatic
i-Force Max hybrid (twin-turbo V6 + motor) 326 kW (437 hp) 790 Nm 10-speed automatic with integrated motor

No V8 is offered any more. The hybrid places its electric motor inside the gearbox housing; MotorWeek rates its towing capacity at just over 10,000 lb. The maximum towing capacity of the range is 12,000 lb (about 5,400 kg), and the maximum payload 1,940 lb (about 880 kg). Trims are SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro and the new top Capstone. The hybrid is standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone and optional from the Limited upwards.

Recalls and reliability

The third generation had an engine recall for machining debris left in the twin-turbo V6. It first covered 2022–2023 trucks and was later extended to non-hybrid trucks built from December 2022 to February 2024. Earlier generations had their own recalls, listed above, and in the 2007–2010 period the Tundra was also part of Toyota's accelerator-pedal recall.
