Verdict Opinion

The Clio is the more versatile supermini. It offers a petrol, a diesel and a full hybrid, has the larger boot in our catalogue, and the 2023 facelift gave it a fresher look. As a used buy it covers more needs than the Polo.

The Polo is the solid, conservative choice. It is still in production, has a 96% adult-occupant score in Euro NCAP, a wide choice of gearboxes including a DSG, and the 147 kW GTI for drivers who want a small hot hatch.

Which one to choose ↓

The Clio and the Polo are the two superminis most European buyers shortlist first, and the Clio has been one of Europe's top-selling cars since it was launched. This comparison covers the fifth-generation Clio, unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and facelifted on 18 April 2023, and the sixth-generation Polo, presented in Berlin on 16 June 2017 and updated in April 2021. Renault revealed a sixth-generation Clio at the Munich Motor Show on 8 September 2025, so the Clio V is now being replaced; the Polo VI continues, built outside Europe since Pamplona ended production in 2024.

In short: the Renault Clio has the larger boot in our catalogue, a full hybrid and a diesel. The Volkswagen Polo is a fraction longer, scored 96% for adult occupants in Euro NCAP and offers the 147 kW GTI. More detail is on our Renault Clio and Volkswagen Polo pages.

Petrol engines: TCe 100 against 1.0 TSI 95

The Clio TCe 100 has a 1.0-litre turbo engine with 74 kW (100 PS) and 160 Nm; our catalogue lists 11.8 seconds to 100 km/h and 187 km/h. The Polo 1.0 TSI 95 delivers 70 kW (95 PS). At the bottom of both ranges sit non-turbo engines of 48 kW: the Clio SCe 65 and the Polo 1.0 MPI 65. Above them Renault offers the 1.3 TCe 130 with 96 kW and 240 Nm and a dual-clutch EDC gearbox.

Hybrid and diesel only at Renault

The Clio E-Tech hybrid, available from 2020, combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, a multi-mode gearbox and a 1.2 kWh battery; our catalogue gives 105 kW. Renault also kept a 1.5 Blue dCi diesel with 63 kW (85 PS) and 220 Nm. The Polo VI launched with 1.6 TDI diesels of 80 and 95 PS and a 1.0 TGI natural-gas engine, but has no hybrid.

It was built in Pamplona, Spain, from 2017 to 2024; right-hand-drive markets are supplied from Kariega in South Africa.
