Verdict Opinion

The RAV4 is the safer default: a five-star Euro NCAP result, all-wheel drive with a dedicated rear motor, and the widest choice of hybrid and plug-in versions. It is also the more common car, which helps when looking for parts or a good used example.

The CR-V wins on room. The current car is longer and wider, its plug-in version keeps a large boot, and a used fifth-generation model is one of the few compact SUVs with an optional third row. Honda's hybrid also feels closer to an electric car in town, because the engine rarely drives the wheels directly.

Which one to choose ↓

Few rivalries in the SUV world are as old or as evenly matched as this one. Toyota showed the first RAV4 in Japan and Europe in 1994; Honda started building the CR-V a year later. Both began as small, car-based off-roaders for people who did not need a ladder frame, and both have grown into mid-size family cars sold on almost every continent.

The RAV4 has become the best-selling SUV of all time, with more than 15 million built by 2025. The CR-V is not far behind in reputation: it was the second-best-selling SUV in the world in 2020. Our catalogue pages focus on the fourth-generation RAV4 (XA40, 2012–2018) and the fifth-generation CR-V (2016–2022). Most questions buyers ask today are about the hybrid and plug-in versions, so this guide covers those as well.

Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV4: key differences

Two different hybrid philosophies

Toyota and Honda reached the same goal by different routes. The fifth-generation RAV4 (XA50, unveiled in New York in March 2018) pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with Toyota's power-split hybrid. In Europe the front-wheel-drive version has 160 kW (218 PS). The AWD-i version has 163 kW (222 PS) and a separate electric motor driving the rear axle. Honda's system, called i-MMD and later e:HEV, uses a 2.0-litre engine that mostly works as a generator, while a 135 kW (184 PS) electric motor drives the wheels. In Europe the CR-V hybrid arrived in February 2019; the fifth generation dropped diesel altogether and offered a 1.5 VTEC Turbo as the petrol choice.

Plug-in versions

The RAV4 plug-in hybrid has 225 kW (306 PS), an 18.1 kWh battery and a claimed electric range of 75 km. The sixth-generation CR-V e:PHEV, on sale in Europe since August 2023, has a 17.7 kWh battery and an electric range of 82 km. Toyota answers with the sixth-generation RAV4 (XA60), revealed in May 2025: its European plug-in hybrid has 197 kW (268 PS) with front-wheel drive or 224 kW (304 PS) with all-wheel drive.

Space and seats

The European RAV4 Hybrid of 2019 is 4,600 mm long on a 2,690 mm wheelbase and has a 580-litre boot. The current CR-V is the larger car: 4,694–4,703 mm long, 1,866 mm wide, on a 2,700 mm wheelbase; the plug-in version still offers 586 litres. The fifth-generation CR-V could also be ordered with seven seats outside North America, something the RAV4 never offered; the sixth generation is a five-seater in Europe.

Safety ratings

Euro NCAP tested the RAV4 Hybrid in 2019 and gave it five stars, with 93% for adult occupant protection. The sixth-generation CR-V was tested in spring 2024: four stars in standard form, five with the optional safety equipment.

Which one to choose

Choose the Toyota RAV4 if you want proven all-wheel drive, the top Euro NCAP rating without extra-cost packs and a plug-in hybrid with strong performance.

Choose the Honda CR-V if cabin and boot space come first, if you value the smooth, mostly electric drive of the e:HEV system, or if a used seven-seat fifth-generation car would suit your family.

For a long daily commute with charging at home, compare the electric range of the exact versions on offer. On paper the current CR-V e:PHEV goes slightly further than the XA50 RAV4 plug-in. Families weighing a third rival can also read our Kia Sportage vs Mitsubishi Outlander comparison.
