Safest cars 2026: eight Euro NCAP top scorers by class
Five Euro NCAP stars no longer tell the whole story: dozens of new cars earn them every year, and the differences between them lie in the percentages behind the stars. Euro NCAP scores four areas: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, protection of pedestrians and cyclists (vulnerable road users) and safety assist systems. The eight cars below were all tested from 2024 onwards under the current protocols, and all earned five stars. They include every 2024 and 2025 Best in Class winner that has a model page on 1cars.

How we chose
Selection. The list includes five-star cars tested by Euro NCAP in 2024 or 2025 that are sold new in Europe and have a published model page on 1cars. It includes every Best in Class winner of those two years with a 1cars model page: the CLA, Mini Cooper E, Model 3 and Model Y from 2025, and the E-Class and Passat from 2024. The Škoda Superb, joint winner with the Passat, the Smart #5, Polestar 3, Zeekr X and Mazda CX-80 have no model page yet. The CX-5 and Kodiaq were added as the highest-scoring family SUVs in the catalogue.
Data sources. Total scores, area percentages and test dates come from the ADAC Autokatalog pages for each model (accessed October 2026); the Mini Cooper E figures come from Euro NCAP's press release of 5 March 2025. Best in Class awards come from Euro NCAP's announcements of 15 January 2025 and 14 January 2026. Prices are German list prices from ADAC.
Ranking. The order follows the total score out of 100 where one is listed, then editorial judgement. Euro NCAP compares cars best within the same class and test year; protocols tighten over time, so a 2025 score is not directly comparable with a 2019 one. Full specifications are on the 1cars pages for the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest car in 2026?
On Euro NCAP results, the Mercedes-Benz CLA. Euro NCAP named it the best performer of all cars tested in 2025, and ADAC lists 91 out of 100 points, with 94 per cent for adult occupants and 93 per cent for vulnerable road users.
How does Euro NCAP choose Best in Class?
It calculates a weighted sum of the scores in the four areas: adult occupant, child occupant, vulnerable road user and safety assist. Only five-star cars with standard safety equipment are eligible.
Is a five-star car from 2019 as safe as one from 2025?
Not necessarily. Euro NCAP raises its requirements over time, so stars are tied to the year of the test. Always check the test year with the rating; the Tesla Model 3, for example, was first rated in 2019 and re-tested in 2025.
Which popular cars scored only four stars recently?
The facelifted Nissan Qashqai was re-tested in 2025 and received four stars, with 78 per cent for adult occupants. The new Renault Clio also received four stars in 2025, and the 1cars catalogue records four stars for the Toyota Aygo X in 2025.
Are small cars less safe than big ones?
Not always. Euro NCAP named the Mini Cooper E the best city car and supermini of 2025, with 89 per cent for adult occupants, the same as the much larger Škoda Kodiaq.
