The first HS made its debut at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show. Sales in China reached 70,365 in 2021. A facelift was shown in September 2020 and sold in China as the MG Linghang, 4,610 mm long. The HS reached Europe in October 2019. In Germany, ADAC lists the EHS plug-in hybrid from January 2021 and the petrol HS from September 2022, both until November 2023, followed by a facelifted first generation in 2023-2024.
The second generation was unveiled on 11 July 2024. It shares much of its engineering with the third-generation Roewe RX5. German sales began in October 2024, and the Hybrid+ followed in July 2025. In the UK the trims are SE and Trophy for the petrol car and SE PHEV and Trophy PHEV for the plug-in hybrid.
The first generation and the EHS plug-in hybrid
The European HS used a 1.5 turbo four-cylinder with 119 kW (162 PS) and 250 Nm, matched to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It reached 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds with the manual and 9.7 seconds with the DCT, and 190 km/h. Chinese buyers could also get a 2.0 turbo with 168 kW (228 PS), 360 Nm and optional all-wheel drive.
The EHS plug-in hybrid combined the 1.5 turbo with a 90 kW (122 PS) electric motor and a 16.6 kWh battery. Its ten-speed EDU gearbox works as six speeds for the engine and four for the motor. ADAC lists 209 kW (284 PS) and 480 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, 52 km of WLTP electric range and 1.8 l/100 km on the WLTP plug-in cycle. In Britain and Australia the EHS was rated at 190 kW (258 PS) and 370 Nm. Its German price was EUR 38,990 in 2021. The fuel tank held only 37 litres and the boot 448 litres.

Fuel economy and running costs
ADAC lists the Hybrid+ at 5.5 l/100 km and 126 g/km of CO2 on the WLTP cycle. The plug-in hybrid is rated at 0.5 l/100 km plus 21.8 kWh/100 km in the weighted WLTP figure, and 5.8 l/100 km with an empty battery, with 100 km of electric range (127 km in town). These official figures only apply if you charge often. On a public or home AC charger the PHEV accepts just 6.6 kW on one phase, so a full charge takes about 4 hours. The fuel cost calculator shows what that means for your annual mileage.

Safety: Euro NCAP
The first-generation HS received five Euro NCAP stars in 2019, with 92% for adult occupants, 81% for child occupants, 64% for pedestrians and 76% for safety assist. ANCAP's matching rating covered only the petrol versions; the plug-in hybrid was not rated in Australia. The second generation was tested in November 2024 and again received five stars, with 90% adult, 85% child, 83% vulnerable road users and 74% safety assist. Ratings for other models are in our safety section.
Ownership notes
We found no verified reliability or recall data for the HS, so we do not list typical faults. What the specifications do show is practical: the first-generation EHS has a small 37-litre fuel tank, and the second-generation PHEV charges slowly on AC. Buyers who cannot charge at home are usually better served by the Hybrid+, which needs no plug.
Sales
The HS sold best in China in its early years, with 70,365 cars in 2021, before Chinese sales almost stopped in 2023. Europe took 32,993 cars in 2022. In Australia the best year was 2022 with 10,948 cars, and in Mexico 2022 with 4,866.
