Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- Best value: the MG4 Urban with the 54 kWh battery. It has the biggest boot and about 416 km of range for far less money.
- Best all-rounder: a first-generation Long Range with 64 kWh, rear-wheel drive and 450 km of range.
- For long trips: the Extended Range with 77 kWh and 520 km WLTP.
- For fun: the XPower, if you can accept the shortest range and the highest price.
The MG4 is a C-segment electric hatchback that SAIC Motor launched in 2022 on its Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), first sold in China as the MG Mulan. Rear-wheel drive, a slim battery and a price well below most rivals made it the second best-selling electric car in the UK in 2023, and the 320 kW XPower turned it into one of the quickest affordable cars on sale. A second generation with front-wheel drive, sold in Europe as the MG4 Urban, arrived in 2025-2026 next to the facelifted original.
In short
- Five-door electric hatchback; first generation (code EH32) from 2022 with rear- or four-wheel drive.
- Batteries of 51, 64 and 77 kWh gross; power from 125 kW (170 PS) to 320 kW (435 PS) in the XPower.
- Up to 520 km WLTP range (Extended Range) and up to 144 kW DC charging.
- Second generation (MG4 Urban) with front-wheel drive, 43 or 54 kWh LFP batteries and a 470-litre boot, from EUR 24,990 in Germany (2026); five Euro NCAP stars in 2022.

MG quotes 50:50 weight distribution, a centre of gravity of 490 mm and a drag coefficient of 0.279, helped by an active grille shutter.
Generations and model history
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG4 I | EH32 | 2022- | 5-door hatchback | electric, 49-77 kWh; XPower dual motor | 99-320 kW (133-429 hp) |
| MG4 II (Urban) | AH4EM | 2025- | 5-door hatchback | electric, 43-54 kWh LFP | 110-120 kW (148-161 hp) |
The first generation went on sale in China as the MG Mulan in 2022 and was renamed MG4 EV in August 2023. Europe got the car from July 2022, with German deliveries listed by ADAC from September 2022. The four-wheel-drive XPower arrived in July 2023 and the Extended Range with a 77 kWh battery in August 2023. At the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed MG showed the EX4, a one-off tribute based on the XPower and developed with RML Group.
Chinese production of the first generation ended in 2025, but the car stays on sale in Europe. ADAC lists a facelift for Germany from March 2026 with three versions: 64 kWh at 140 kW (190 PS), 77 kWh at 180 kW (245 PS) and the XPower.
Versions, batteries and performance
| Version | Battery, gross / net | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h | WLTP range | DC charging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 51 / 49 kWh LFP | 125 kW (170 PS) | 250 Nm | 7.7 s | 350 km | 88 kW |
| Long Range | 64 / 59.5 kWh NMC | 150 kW (204 PS) | 250 Nm | 7.9 s | 450 km | 140 kW |
| Extended Range | 77 / 74.4 kWh NMC | 180 kW (245 PS) | 350 Nm | 6.5 s | 520 km | 144 kW |
| XPower (AWD) | 64 / 61.7 kWh NMC | 320 kW (435 PS) | 600 Nm | 3.8 s | 385 km | 140 kW |
All first-generation batteries come from CATL. ADAC gives a top speed of 160 km/h for the Standard and Long Range and a WLTP consumption of 17.0 and 16.0 kWh/100 km respectively. The figures in the table combine ADAC data for the German models with Wikipedia for the Extended Range and XPower. In Singapore and Nepal, MG also sold a Long Range with only 99 kW (135 PS).

The MG4 XPower
The XPower adds a 150 kW front motor to a 170 kW rear motor for 320 kW (435 PS) and 600 Nm, enough for 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. MG fitted an electronic locking differential with torque vectoring, which it calls Dynamic Cornering Control, 25% stiffer springs, stiffer anti-roll bars, quicker steering, 345 mm brake discs with orange calipers and 18-inch wheels. In Germany it cost EUR 46,990 at launch in July 2023, the same price ADAC lists for the 2026 facelift. Its WLTP range of 385 km is the shortest of the line-up.

MG4 Urban: the second generation
The second generation was revealed in March 2025. Mass production in China began on 14 July 2025, with deliveries from September 2025 and 11,067 refundable deposits in the first 24 hours. Its styling borrows elements from the MG Cyberster roadster. Unlike the original it has front-wheel drive, MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, and it sits on SAIC's E3 architecture with the battery cells integrated into the body.
Batteries are LFP packs of 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh. In China a 53.9 kWh semi-solid-state battery from QingTao, sold as the Anxin edition, followed in late 2025. Export cars have 110 or 118 kW. ADAC lists the 54 kWh Urban with 118 kW (160 PS), 250 Nm, 9.5 s to 100 km/h, 160 km/h, 15.3 kWh/100 km and 416 km of WLTP range; DC charging peaks at 87 kW. The cabin has a 15.6-inch central touchscreen.

| Height (I / II) | 1,504 / 1,549 mm | 59.2 / 61.0 in |
| Wheelbase (I / II) | 2,705 / 2,750 mm | 106.5 / 108.3 in |

| Boot, seats up (I / II) | 363 / 470 l | 12.8 / 16.6 cu ft |
| Boot, seats folded (I / II) | 1,177 / 1,362 l | 41.6 / 48.1 cu ft |
The Urban is the more practical car despite its smaller batteries. It is 108 mm longer, has a 45 mm longer wheelbase and offers about 100 litres more boot space; Wikipedia adds 98 litres under the floor. The first-generation MG4 is lower and sportier, and its boot is on the small side for the class.
Running costs and charging
An electric car's running costs depend mostly on electricity prices. With official consumption between 15.3 kWh/100 km (Urban 54 kWh) and 17.0 kWh/100 km (Standard), the MG4 is efficient for its size. AC charging is 6.6 kW on the first-generation Standard and 11 kW on the Long Range and on the Urban. Our cost of ownership calculator helps compare it with a petrol car, and other models are listed in our electric cars section.

Safety: Euro NCAP
Euro NCAP tested the first-generation MG4 in 2022 and awarded five stars, with 83% for adult occupants, 80% for child occupants, 75% for pedestrians and 78% for safety assist. The MG4 Urban was tested in 2025 and scored 87% adult, 85% child, 85% vulnerable road users and 80% safety assist. Ratings of other cars are in our safety section.
Known issues and reviews
The press liked the MG4's value, range, charging and handling. Top Gear praised its agility compared with the Volkswagen ID.3 but found the seats uncomfortable for larger people and noticed occasional infotainment stutter. Autocar criticised the cabin noise insulation, and Auto Express the lack of premium materials. Swedish outlets reported software and hardware faults, including unexplained interruptions while charging and buggy infotainment and driver-assist systems. A used buyer should check that the software is up to date.
Sales
In 2023 the MG4 was the second best-selling electric car in the UK, behind the Tesla Model Y. That year 138,736 MG4s were exported from China, more than any other Chinese electric car.
