The Audi e-tron GT is a four-door electric gran turismo that Audi has built since December 2020 at its Böllinger Höfe site near Heilbronn. It shares the J1 platform and about 40% of its parts with the Porsche Taycan, uses an 800-volt electrical system and has a motor on each axle. Presented on 9 February 2021, the e-tron GT was the first Audi electric car built in Germany. A revised range with a larger battery and outputs of up to 680 kW followed in June 2024.

In short

  • Four-door electric coupé on the J1 platform (with the Porsche Taycan), built at Audi Böllinger Höfe since December 2020.
  • 2021–2024: e-tron GT quattro with 390 kW boost and RS e-tron GT with 475 kW boost; 93.4 kWh battery, 270 kW DC charging.
  • Since June 2024: S e-tron GT, RS e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT performance with 500–680 kW on boost, 105 kWh battery and 320 kW charging.
  • RS e-tron GT performance reaches 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds.

From concept to production

Audi showed the e-tron GT concept at the Los Angeles motor show in November 2018 and again at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019. Before the production car was revealed, a black prototype appeared on screen in Avengers: Endgame (2019), driven by Tony Stark, with a digitally created sound.

Production began in December 2020 at Böllinger Höfe, a site between Neckargartach and Biberach near Heilbronn operated by Audi Sport, and the production model was presented on 9 February 2021. European pre-orders opened in mid-February 2021. Earlier Audi electric cars had been built in Belgium, so the e-tron GT became the first Audi EV made in Germany. The exterior was designed by Parys Cybulski and Lucia Lee, and in 2021 the car won the Golden Steering Wheel as the most beautiful car of the year.

Platform and technology

The J1 platform uses an 800-volt electrical architecture. Each axle has its own permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The front motor drives through a single-speed gearbox, the rear motor through a two-speed gearbox.

The RS versions have a roof made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, three-chamber air suspension and brake discs with a tungsten carbide coating; carbon-ceramic brakes are optional on both versions. Since the 2024 update, the S e-tron GT has adaptive suspension, a sport differential with torque vectoring and all-wheel steering as standard.

Versions, power and performance

Version Years Power (boost) Torque 0–100 km/h Top speed
e-tron GT quattro 2021–2024 350 kW (390 kW) - 4.1 s 245 km/h
RS e-tron GT 2021–2024 440 kW (475 kW) - 3.3 s 250 km/h
S e-tron GT from 2024 435 kW (500 kW) 740 Nm 3.4 s -
RS e-tron GT from 2024 500 kW (630 kW) 865 Nm 3.1 s -
RS e-tron GT performance from 2024 550 kW (680 kW) 1,027 Nm 2.5 s -

The 2024 cars have a launch-control boost of 65 kW (S) or 130 kW (RS models), and the RS versions add a push-to-pass function worth another 70 kW for short bursts. On boost, the strongest version produces 680 kW (925 PS).

Battery, charging and range

The first e-tron GT used a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery of 93.4 kWh gross and about 84 kWh net. DC charging peaked at 270 kW; on an 11 kW wallbox a full charge took about nine hours. Wikipedia's infobox gives a range of 425 km, while the US EPA rated it at 383 km (238 miles) and Edmunds achieved 439 km (273 miles) in its own test.

The 2024 update brought a 105 kWh (gross) battery that Audi describes as larger yet lighter, and raised the peak DC charging power from 270 to 320 kW. Under ideal conditions a 10–80% charge takes about 18 minutes. Audi Australia quotes ranges of up to 559 km for the S e-tron GT, 522 km for the RS and 528 km for the RS performance.
